AJ 200E Review

By Daniel Edwards

from Canton, NC

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

Verdict- Definetly the best guitar in my collection. I would recomend this guitar to beginners or to pros looking for a backup.
The main feature of this guitar is the Piezo pickup, while other reviews suggest that there were some problems I found away around them. I played the guitar through my Fender Mustang 1 and had the sound I wanted in no time at all. A good amp goes a long way!
The quality of this guitar is mind blowing! The solid spruce top, and solid back and sides give you that perfect acoustic sound. The action is amazing too! I went ahead and changed strings the first day to Daddario strigs because the strings that were on it sounded dead. I love the feel of the neck. It's percect for power chords, flat picking, and solos. I am going to have the nut, saddle, and endpins replaced replaced bone ones. This is just a personal prefference the plastic parts that it comes with are fine. While it's not a Gibson it's the next best thing.
The value of this guitar is priceless! I own a few other acoustic and this is the cheapest of them. It is also the best sounding and best playing. This in my opinion is the best guitar for the money on the market today.

The old style acoustic that dosent break the bank, has great quality and looks.

By Rob Fischer

from Wallis, Texas

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

For being a low priced epiphone everything suprised me... even the Manufactured Strings were pretty good (suprisingly) pickup is great .. looks Vintage.... and this guitar is great for gigging if i were to suggest a non Gibson that looked like one but didnt break the bank and wasnt already a signature model... I'll go with this one 110%!
When I first pulled it out of the box I could tell right away... this guitar looks almost exactly like a Gibson J-45. A few days earlier at Guitar Center I had played on a J-45 and when I played on this... I could tell right away... Tthe necks are almost the same the Gibson may have had a little faster neck, but for this price for this nice of an acoustic... It cant be beat!
As I said... it felt almost like a Gibson (meaning that is saying that its REALLY good.) The other reviews talk about how the Pezio Passive on this is bad... quite honestly... I actually think it sounds incredibly well for the price, I mean don't expect Gibson tone but its great for the price, even the acoustic player in my schools jazz band said that it sounds pretty good for being so cheap, and he uses martins and taylor acoustics... so that should be telling you something there. only complaint is the plastic E on the pickguard... mine fell off within the first few days, but I've have friends who have had those kind of E's on thier acoustics for years, so I guess its just a drain on luck that you get a non sticky one.
The overal look of the acoustic says Beatles or 40's blues player, for being an epiphone this guitars finish was very well put on... the pickup sounds great through my Acoustic AG30 and for such a low price... this is great!

Good Guitar for 8 out of 12 Months

By Donald Wolpert

from Maryland

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

I basically bought this guitar last year to substitute for my Guild D-35 when I go to prayer meetings, small social events and to any venue which would expose an instrument to less than favorable weather conditions. Before long, I started using it to practice new songs with complicated chords and/or fingering before going to my Guild, but I also find myself using the AJ much more often than I originally intended. And, adding a jumbo to an essemble of musicians which already includes two dreadnoughts helps and improves the group with our sound. Overall, I like this AJ200E, but I can not give it a perfect score for the reasons I already gave. But it is well worth the money. Plus, with the easy action it has, it would be great for a beginner.
I love the rounded shoulder look and the thinness of the neck which makes it quite fast. Though the sunburst finish was a dissapointment, the actual finish was not quite the one represented in the photograph. The sunburst do not extend to the edges of the instrument as I hoped it would which leaves the look of the AJ a bit dark. Oh well, the gloss finish is very nice and I got used to the sunburst, dark as it is. But what is most striking is the low register of the sound. Very bassy. Very full.
This instrument did not come out of the box ready to play. It buzzed. But this did not surprise me since this item was in storage before puirchase for who knows how long. Tightening the strings improved it some but it was after I replaced the strings with a fresh set of DAddario lights that the buzz went away. And I found the action low and fast. Very easy to play bar chords with little effort. Then winter started setting in, then the buzz came back on the second, third, and some times the fourth strings. By March, the buzz went away. It is the humidity. This guitar seems to be more affected by it than other guitars I have. A higher saddle may be in order. I'll miss that low action.
For the price, it is an exceptional instrument with a full sound, I have not miked in the guitar directly due to the awful treble sound I found it makes with my practice amp. It difinitely needs a voice shaping/pre-amp before going into the final amp. That wonderful low sound is lost without it. Also that low, full sound do not project very far from this guitar if you go 'unplugged' in even in a moderate sized venue.

Pretty Great Guitar

By Sean

from P.A.

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

When researching acoustics I wanted a simple acoustic, with a sunburst finish, and no cut away. I was always a fan of the Gibson J45 after seeing pictures of the Beatles and Marc Bolan play them. When I received the AJ200E I was surprised at how similar the two guitars actually were. Finish wise, besides the control knobs on the front the two are almost identical. They also have a similar sound so if you like the J45 you'll like this guitar. The action was a bit better on the J45 but both guitars play beautifully right out of the box. I'm very pleased with this guitar and have received a lot of compliments about it from others when I play it.
I love the rounded bell shape vs. the square shape of most modern acoustics. The acoustic has a piezo and a 1/4" jack but that is the extent of the electronics. It has a strap pin on the base of the neck joint also which makes for a nicer place for the strap instead of the headstock. Very comfortable. It's also fully bound and gorgeous.
I have no complaints about the guitar at all except the pickup. About the pickup, you will have to plug into a sound shaping unit before you go into a PA system. The piezo alone is way too bright and harsh. I play at church with another guitarist and he can't stand the sound of this guitar if I don't use a preamp of some sort. On the other hand it doesn't need 9V batteries to play it. I don't think this takes away from the guitar though.
For the price you can't beat this guitar especially if you like the J45. The tone, look, and cool factor are all there. The amplified tone isn't great alone, but with a preamp its awesome. I recommend the Behringer ADI21 Acoustic Amp Modeler Direct Recording Preamp DI Box. This is a great guitar and I love it. It's classy.

Really Satisfied

By M J Madden

from Moses Lake WA

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

I bought this guitar to play to play gigs like Farmers markets etc. so I wouldn't subject my Gibson J45 to being out in the weather or easy theft. The look and finish is awesome I'm sure I could nit pick it but why? At it's price point I don't see there being a better guitar out there.I got rid of the original strings slapped a set of Elixers on it and that was it. It plays great. The overall appearance of the guitar is so like my J45 I'm supprised Gibson doesn't sue itself. As for the pickup, I run it through my Baggs DI box into my Acoustic amp and it sounds great.A real bargin/

Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar

By Scoobysnack

from Boston

Comments about Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar:

I bought the Epiphone AJ200E Acoustic electric guitar with the idea of using it as a back up to my Alvarez acoustic which I use for my gigs. From the moment I picked it up and started playing did I realize that my Alvarez was now my backup guitar. It has a nice balanced sound and plays nice and loud plugged in although a preamp will improve the sound even further. The factory strings needed changing which Is usually the case but The Elixir strings I put on help the guitar ring like a bell. The action is nice and the guitar plays better than one three times the price. Great quality for a surprising price from the Gibson family of guitars who obviously take pride in there product.
