I have a variety of guitars and I always wanted a good cross section of tones and sounds when playing.
I got this in the mail and I was suprised by the finish, the attention to detail, the playability out of the case. The pick-ups are perfect for what I play, classic rock. I have Strats for the Metal music and acoustics for ballad type of songs. this one covers all generes of music.
I must be the lucky one because what I have should be a Gibson, but why pay for the name when you can have the real thing for a whole lot less.
This is the Crown Jewel of Epiphone. Why do you think John Lennon played one?

Right off the bat I found myself not enjoying it that much for the following reasons:1. The volume and tone knobs wobble when they turn.2. The guitar will not stay in tune.3. The g-string will not intonate correctly.4. The finish was not flawless.5. The plug-in jack would refuse to tighten.6. The nut for the pick-guard fell off for no apparent reason.Anyways my first modification was to have the horrid cheap black plastic nut removed and had a decent bone nut put on. That seemed to cure most of the tuning problems however that did not cure the biggest problem of all. The g-string will simply not intonate correctly. No matter where I placed the string saddle and how I tuned it. It was either in tune on the first few frets and out of tune below the 5th fret or it was in tune between the 12th and 5th frets and flat on the first three frets and played in open.I've emailed Epiphone about this and they say take it to a dealer but I'm fed up with messing with it. This guitar had a label on it saying it had been set-up and inspected in the USA. I disagree, it was simply given the visual once over and put back in its case.I've decided to trade it in for a Rickenbacker as I'm about done with inferior quality guitars. For me a guitar simply must stay in tune and have excellent intonation, that is my pre-requisite. The Epiphone does not perform these simple functions, no matter how cheap it was or how pretty it is.It even sounds pretty good but how can I play live with a guitar that sounds out of tune?I think my advice would be to ensure that you thoroughly check and play your Epiphone's intonation before purchasing it. There just seems to be too much tolerance from one guitar to the next, alternately you could buy a real Gibson. On the positive side, the guitar plays well in clean settings and in highly distorted settings, with excellent sustain and good playability. The kind of music I play is brit-pop/mod/indie, so it's well suited for those styles of music. Really the sound isn't too far away from a Gibson Les Paul, except that it appears to have even more sustain than a Les Paul. The guitar sounds best played through my Fender Hotrod Deville 410 60 watt tube amp. And as said before handles a lot of distortion easily. With a creamy full Gibson tone all the way.My last Epiphone before this guitar was an Epiphone Sheraton which was definitely a notch above the Dot with a bound body, neck and a faster fret-board. I also own a Vox Mark III and a Rickenbacker 360/12 both of those guitars are flawless works of art. With no intonation troubles.I guess my only piece of advice is, if you must buy one of these please play it first or be prepared for a long battle trying to lick it into shape. If you can possibly save the money and buy a Gibson or one of the more expensive Epiphones such as the Sheraton, Casino or Riviera you'll be a lot happier.RecommendedNo

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

Love the guitar. Beautiful finish and well constructed. Apparently sat in warehouse too long before shipping. Strings corroded. And guitar not set up well. They sent me new strings and I went to my local guitar store to have it setup. Cost me to do so. So this is in addition to payment for guitar. Guitar is perfect now. This should have been checked before shipment.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

I purchased a level 3 dot and it came in with a few scratches and a volume knob missing. No big deal. However, two pots were loose and the machine heads (all of them) were also not tight. Seemed like mass production issues to me since the guitar looked like it was hardly played at all. It doesn't intonate perfectly, and the nut is cheap and will eventually have to be replaced. Other than that, you can't find a kick around semi-hollow body for this price. It sounds pretty good, plays decently and the finish (sunburst) is also quite nice. Electronics and pickups are ok. So bottom line, if your looking for a "decent" (not great) semi hollow body at a really good price, then this will fit the bill.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar to take with my to boarding school. So far, it has not let me down. Yes, the stupid E logo on the pick guard fell off pretty soon after the purchase, but I was happy about that - as I said, it looked stupid. The dot handles all styles very well from what I've used it for. The rear pickup handles overdrive quite nicely and is good for bands like Green Day, The Stones, etc. If you turn OD off and switch to both p-ups, it gives a great acoustic tone. The neck pickup could be better, though. I've played it at numerous open mic nights, however, and it hasn't let me down yet. Only two things really bother me 1. I can't sling this as low as I can my LP, but that's really a personal thing and 2. There's no volume knob for just the rear pickup. Whatever. All in all, a great deal for the money. Would definitely recommend to my friends.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

First shipment had minor cosmetic issues, but easily resolved with Musician's Friends return policy. Excellent service on both shipments. 2nd guitar was virtually flawless,

I love 335 type guitars. I have a Lucille and two Dot Deluxe models, but wanted a standard model for everyday use (no gold hardware). I ordered the Natural. The fretwork was great and the setup was fine after a little intonation adjustment. The neck profile is slightly slimmer than my older Dot Deluxes and is a C shape with a D shape heel.

The Dot is very versatile and has been used for just about every music genre imaginable throughout the years. You can't go wrong with a Dot and Musician's Friend.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

I'm what you would call a semi-pro player. I've been playing for decades and have a weekly gig but work a full-time non-music job as well.

This is a great guitar, especially for the price. It is NOT a "cheap" feeling instrument like some of the Ibanez models out of China. My Dot is Chinese, made in 2006. I am VERY happy with it, it has versatility to play jazz, blues or rock depending on how you set up your hardware.

I will say anyone who expects a guitar to play perfectly out of the box is being quite unrealistic. Every guitar needs a set up to the players specific needs. Once I paid a for a professional set up the guitar played like butter. I have a Les Paul Standard and Ovation Standard Elite 6778 - both far more expensive than this Epiphone but to be honest, I play the Epiphone Dot more than the other two guitars.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

I don't think it's fair to compare an Epiphone to a much more expensive Gibson, so I won't go there. I just got this guitar and was pleasantly surprised at how well it's made, and how well it sounds. All I needed to do was lower the action a bit and I was off and running. The weight and balance is excellent. The flexibility of tones and sounds is amazing although I'm going to probably at some point put in a SD Jazz in the neck position and an SH4-JB in the bridge position. The Epiphone Dot as many have said is one of the best values out there. Don't let any of these reviews sway you one way or the other, just go and try one, like I did, and make the call. I'll be playing this one for many years to come.
