I have a variety of guitars and I always wanted a good cross section of tones and sounds when playing.
I got this in the mail and I was suprised by the finish, the attention to detail, the playability out of the case. The pick-ups are perfect for what I play, classic rock. I have Strats for the Metal music and acoustics for ballad type of songs. this one covers all generes of music.
I must be the lucky one because what I have should be a Gibson, but why pay for the name when you can have the real thing for a whole lot less.
This is the Crown Jewel of Epiphone. Why do you think John Lennon played one?

Right off the bat I found myself not enjoying it that much for the following reasons:1. The volume and tone knobs wobble when they turn.2. The guitar will not stay in tune.3. The g-string will not intonate correctly.4. The finish was not flawless.5. The plug-in jack would refuse to tighten.6. The nut for the pick-guard fell off for no apparent reason.Anyways my first modification was to have the horrid cheap black plastic nut removed and had a decent bone nut put on. That seemed to cure most of the tuning problems however that did not cure the biggest problem of all. The g-string will simply not intonate correctly. No matter where I placed the string saddle and how I tuned it. It was either in tune on the first few frets and out of tune below the 5th fret or it was in tune between the 12th and 5th frets and flat on the first three frets and played in open.I've emailed Epiphone about this and they say take it to a dealer but I'm fed up with messing with it. This guitar had a label on it saying it had been set-up and inspected in the USA. I disagree, it was simply given the visual once over and put back in its case.I've decided to trade it in for a Rickenbacker as I'm about done with inferior quality guitars. For me a guitar simply must stay in tune and have excellent intonation, that is my pre-requisite. The Epiphone does not perform these simple functions, no matter how cheap it was or how pretty it is.It even sounds pretty good but how can I play live with a guitar that sounds out of tune?I think my advice would be to ensure that you thoroughly check and play your Epiphone's intonation before purchasing it. There just seems to be too much tolerance from one guitar to the next, alternately you could buy a real Gibson. On the positive side, the guitar plays well in clean settings and in highly distorted settings, with excellent sustain and good playability. The kind of music I play is brit-pop/mod/indie, so it's well suited for those styles of music. Really the sound isn't too far away from a Gibson Les Paul, except that it appears to have even more sustain than a Les Paul. The guitar sounds best played through my Fender Hotrod Deville 410 60 watt tube amp. And as said before handles a lot of distortion easily. With a creamy full Gibson tone all the way.My last Epiphone before this guitar was an Epiphone Sheraton which was definitely a notch above the Dot with a bound body, neck and a faster fret-board. I also own a Vox Mark III and a Rickenbacker 360/12 both of those guitars are flawless works of art. With no intonation troubles.I guess my only piece of advice is, if you must buy one of these please play it first or be prepared for a long battle trying to lick it into shape. If you can possibly save the money and buy a Gibson or one of the more expensive Epiphones such as the Sheraton, Casino or Riviera you'll be a lot happier.RecommendedNo

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

This guitar has a decent build quality and one of the better Epiphones I've played. I would have to say however that the fret buzz is quite noticeable and that the finish on the neck is very sticky when playing for long amounts of time. I've gigged with this guitar and would again, but not entirely impressed by the thicker '60's profile' neck

Cons

  • Fret Buzz
  • Poor Quality Craftsmanship

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

I had 3 of these and had to send everyone back! The 1st one had bad fret buzz, the 2nd had fret buzz, a backbow in the neck, and a non-working truss rod, and the 3rd had fret buzz. I have been playing guitar for 52 years, so I know a little about setting them up, and even after doing that, they were unacceptable. MF took them all back and refunded my money, but what a pain in the ***! I won't buy another!

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

Great guitar, especialy if you use a high end tube amp. The solid block of wood (factory installed) under the pickups greatly reduces feedback and adds some warmth, but does make the guitar heavier than a normal arch top. Had trouble staying in tune and some buzzing issues; solved these problems with a custom made nut carved from bone and a complete set-up done by a pro for 11-48 gauge strings. Be sure to swap out the cheap plastic (factory) nut as it is very grabby. Very nice neck and fretbroad;easy to play. Sweet to crunching tones and everything in between. Big fat warm tone when plugged into my Fender Twin. Also sounds great plugged directly into a sound (mixing) board. I love playing this guitar.....but only after swapping out the nut and having a technician go over it with a fine tooth comb. Well worth it to spend some money getting this baby tweaked up. You won't be dissapointed.

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

This is a fantastic guitar. Great tone and quality all around. Straight neck and setup right out of the box. The vintage sunburst finish is stunning with the chrome hardware. Hated the "orange" control knobs so changed them out with new Black top hats with chrome caps...awesome. Not as fancy as a Sheraton Pro, but very close to a G_____ 335. Hated the "Gold" color of the new Sheratons...too orangy (Not Gold). I am very happy with this Epiphone Dot and consider it as good as any other more expensive guitars I've ever owned. Got a Epi case for it...Black with chrome hardware...Perfect! Highly recommend the Dot for any type of music, especially Country, Jazz, Oldies, etc.

      Excellent!

Comments about Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar:

The neck fits my (medium-sized) hands like a glove. For me, this would be reason enough to buy one. It has a nice, wide, flat fretboard that suits my playing perfectly. Out of the box ,the action was a little high. I had to do some tweaking to lower the action and eliminate fret buzz. Once this was accomplished, it played like a dream. I ordered the Vintage sunburst mode, and it's beautiful; finish was flawless. I find the Dot great for warm bluesy and jazzy things, but also for overdriven rock. Sure, it's not as good as a 335 - but for the price, this a 5 star value. Highly recommended!

I'm just a beginner and wanted to move up to an electric. I did a lot of reading, and kept coming back to the Epiphone Dot. Seems like a great guitar for the money. It just feels good to hold compared to my acoustic. I checked it top to bottom when unwrapped, not a blemish, not a scratch- absolutely perfect. I ordered the Cherry finish and it is just beautiful, can't keep from looking at it.

I purchased this as a blem and if the light is just right and you are standing just so and holding the guitar thus you can see where some fool tried to put a capo on it. Not a problem, never see it and I buy 'em to play, not look at. The discount was very helpful (the deciding factor). Well worth the money and other than a wonky G string setup was was spot on. I've got a lot of guitars and almost all of them much more expensive - This looks good and is a player and holds its own with guitars costing three times as much.

Made changes by replacing the nut. Since I replaced the pickups (Pro-Burstbuckers) I also worked the potentiometers over. Well you're saying why do all that? I've invested a little money and it sounds great. But to get one right out of the box ready to rock, doesn't happen that fast. There's going to be some tweeking here and there. I only gave it a 4 star. I did all my work though.
