Before talking about the instrument - a little bit about the GC store and staff, sometimes the butt of jokes (whether the guys have earned that reputation is not for me to say).
Several guys named Mike @ the Westlake GC location (store 231), and each one I met was unfailingly courteous and customer-friendly.
Acoustic section Mike let me know I could ask him questions and was otherwise non-intrusive.
I watched him assist several others with their selections and come back to ask if I needed anything.
When I did, and he was busy, he let me know there was another Mike in the electric guitar section who could complete the order.

Electric Mike (receipt calls him associate 061185) was equally helpful and gave me an accurate estimate of arrival time as well as a good strategy for cases - wait til it arrives in the store to see what's in stock (and special order only if nothing in stock is a good fit).
I'll be happy to do business with them again and have recommended this guitar to two friends so far.

Instrument - Item ID 100291504
The +
The frets are level and properly trimmed (no jagged ends poking thru the plastic binding) but not polished.
Compensated bridge looks/sounds right on cowboy chords and when touching 12th fret harmonics.
"1.6 in " nut measurement spec on GC website is not not correct (fortunately).
It's closer to 1.75 in and feels right.
Sounds good right out of the box.
Tuners (twelve of 'em) work okay.

The -
Nut (plastic - not bone) arrived out of position, slightly off center - adjusted by the shop after a brief exchange of emails.
The model DR212 I received has a "Made in Indonesia" sticker (placed over scarf joint on the back of headstock).
The GC website specifies China as "Country of origin" - this is what I expected/hoped for instead.
Although this instrument never spent a day on the sales-floor, the original strings were surprisingly dirty, leaving corrosion marks on my fingers and black residue on my pick. (see pics)
Minor back-of-neck discolorations in the thick poly finish - I've applied Meguiar's fine-cut #2 w/ elbow grease and the marks remain, but it doesn't affect sound.

The ???
The cute little E logo falls off the pickguard in less than 24 hrs of at-home-play.
Honestly, I'd expected that to be riveted through the select spruce top and impossible to remove - shrug.
Peace - Deeve

You can't beat this guitar for the price. The nut was a little sharp on one end, but an emery board took care of that problem. It has stayed in tune for a long time. When I needed to retune due to the cooler temperature, one of the strings broke.

Great 12 string for the money

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

10
Ok, so I gave this Epiphone 12 string a 10. I know no guitar is exactly a 10, at least to me. There is always something that could be better. But aside from that, this Epiphone 12 string is great for the little money it cost. Ok, so its made in China, but it sounds great and plays great regardless. I have been playing guitar for 35 years now. I have been wanting a 12 string for a while now, but for the little time I would play one, I did not want to spend an arm and two legs for one, so I searched and read, and compared, and came to the Epiphone DR-212 and bought it. Im really pleased with this 12. My friends and I sit around and jam on songs, a lot of 80's stuff, The Church, Modern English, Some 70's stuff, like Sundown, Carefree Highway, Chevy Van, etc, in which a 12 string is a must to have for the right sound. I love this 12. For the money you can't beat it. The quality is great, and the tone is great, as for the playability. Really comfortable neck. Its a great 12 string for the money. Get it.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

Recieved this just the other day and, I was definately not dissappointed. This is a beautiful guitar with fine appointments especially for the price. I tweaked the truss rod just a bit and, I mean very little increasing the playability greatly. The strings that came on the instrument are OK but, I will definately put D'Addario EJ41's on it in the future. Other than that It's a GREAT guitar.

Great 12-String at a great price

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

This is a great guitar I play some experimental stuff with it as well as some Birds sound with it. You can even do a little soloing with it but not much past the 12th fret because it's not a cut-away. I like jamming and getting a bit of an Eastern sound with all the drones from the octave stings. But playing folk or acoustic rock is more what it's designed for.
Great playability. The feel and action of mine is great. The only thing I adjusted was the tuners. I like to keep them tight. I lucked out on whomever set this one up.
Great quality for the price. The action is fast. The frets are smooth, accurate and no buzz. Intonation and neck are great. The sound is awesome.
This price for a 12-string that stays in tune, play easily and sounds great is a sweet value.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

This is my Long Term Review. I have had this guitar for a bit over two years now and can give a more complete picture of it.

First, the good. This is a very well made guitar. Under the pros, you will notice I mentioned Good Construction. This is particularly important in a 12 string. The biggest issue with all 12's is that they tend to come apart very quickly. You will have bowing, warping, separation of glueing, etc. All this is because of the tremendous extra pressure 12's suffer. After 2+ years, this guitar is still solid as a rock, and I leave it strung all the time. So I would say construction and bracing are very good on this instrument. Along with this is the fact that it Stays In Tune. This is another major issue with all 12's. Again, that extra force tends to make them go out of tune quickly. This one holds tune very well, and that is important as tuning a 12 takes some time.

As for sound, I would say Not too Bad overall, and Really Good for an budget level guitar. It is a little thin for my taste, but there are ways around that. First, throw on a set of decent strings. I prefer Martin Marquise on mine, but personal choice. Second, I like to play through an acoustic amp, and I put a Seymour Ducan Woody on mine. When adjusted correctly, I can get a really decent, full bass sound, lots of body and still keep a nice jangle expected from a 12. Will it sound like a Martin or Gibson, no, but it gives a really nice sound for such a low price.

As for the negatives, very few. First, keep in mind when Epiphone says "Select Spruce Top," they really mean laminated, not solid. But I suppose there varying qualities of laminated woods as well, and this one is great - really good resonance and sustain. It could maybe do with a better set of tuners, but as said before, it holds tune exceptionally well.

Overall, for the price, Epiphone makes a really nice and playable guitar. Now am just praying they come out with a Masterbilt version of it.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

This is my first 12 string and I LOVE it.

I was hesitant about buying it online, but when I opened up the box and checked it out and strummed some chords I was pleasantly surprised.

I originally was obsessed with wanting to get one of the Martin X-Series 12 strings, but when I went to my local music store, cash in hand, to buy the one I've been obsessing over for over a year and noticed that it was made out of laminate (like laminate counter tops) I moved on and just decided that I wanted to get a good value 12 string and use the rest of the money to buy other stuff (lots of other stuff).

This guitar is GREAT. Right out of the box. It has great tone and feel. It plays really easily and has pretty good action. I'm even surprised that the strings don't sound completely hideous, although they're in order to be replaced ASAP. The neck is straight, it was almost too straight, but when I tuned it up it got that perfect amount of bow.

The fit and finish are excellent. First and foremost I love that it's made out of real wood. I know it isn't made out of SOLID wood, but plywood looks exponentially better than the Formica they glue to the outside of Martins.

The natural finish is a touch more on the lighter side of natural.

And it sounds great, just like a 12 string should.

If you're doubting whether you should get this guitar the bottom line is: DON'T.
It's a great buy as most "value guitars" are, especially if you don't fear making minor adjustments or setup stuff like truss-rod, saddle, and nut adjustments yourself. It pays to know how to do that kind of stuff whether you're buying a cheap guitar or an expensive one.

Get this guitar if you're looking for a 12 string.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

PLEASE DON'T buy this based on my initial review back in Oct 2012. After only *3 months* I've had problems and learned the hard way that the warranty is not there to help *you*...it's only there to help Epiphone. No I didn't drop it, or kick it or abuse it but in my DR212's current state it'll cost me about half of what I paid for the guitar before I can play it again. My advice is DON'T buy it unless you're willing to take the chance that you'll have to spend money on it within a few short months. And get the "I'll be covered under the warranty" thought right out of your mind. NO YOU WON'T.

Change strings immediately! While you have the bridge pins out remove the casting
flashing from them. A jewelers file and 600 grit sandpaper works great just be gentle
I also cleaned sides of the saddle up with 220 grit so it fit a little better in the bridge..

Worth the little time and effort this takes.
Every guitarist should have a 12 string and this one is a great value. You really
      can't go wrong.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

It's a great value for the money.

I got this about 2 weeks ago and it's been a real joy having a 12 string guitar to play. The action is acceptable (not high, but not too low). The spacing on the strings is a touch on the wide side, but I think it'll just take a little getting used to.

My only complaints are, firstly, about the strings. I've heard that these are shipped with D'addario standard PB light-gauge strings. Now, I've never been a huge fan of D'addario strings; their sound is average/acceptable, but every set I've ever had (and I've had quite a few sets over the last decade) turns my fingers and picks a nasty greenish-black color. My belief is that it has something to do with the composition and quality of the strings and the materials used to make them. I've used D'addario's on all of my electrics and acoustics with the same results; average sound and tone and green-black residue on my fingers. That can be fixed easily with a new set of different strings.

My second complaint is that after having the guitar for about a week it's developed what looks like and hopefully is ONLY a finish crack in the back near the bottom. I'm assuming it has something to do with the elevated, but proper humidity level I'm keeping it in. It's kept and played in a room that is constantly around 40-45% humidity, like all of the rest of my many stringed instruments.

I don't know whether it's even worth the hassle of shipping it back to Musician's friend to exchange it. I know that there is a 45 day return policy, but I've been playing it and it definitely looks like it's been played. If the crack gets worse my concern is that it's not just a finish crack and I'm curious about how good Gibson/Epiphone's lifetime warranty is.

With all that being said it's a pretty good guitar and has thoroughly scratched my 12 string itch.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

I have been playing and teaching guitar for 35 years, and needed a new 12 string, so I gave the DR-212 a try. This is probably the best budget line 12 string you will find.

First, the brand. For those not aware, Epiphone is owned by Gibson. Most companies have a budget line (ie. Squire by Fender and Applause by Ovation). That said, as Gibson is tops in guitars, Epi's are tops in budget lines. I have owned several, and while they are no Gibson, in my opinion they are a whole class above other budget lines.

Next, the build. The guitar seems solidly built. Fit and finish are flawless on mine. On some budget lines, running a finger over seams you will feel the joint edges. Not on my Epi. Many 12's take constant tunning, but these tuners are solid and hold very well. Which is good as they are fairly close together, making tunning a bit tedious. Please note that "Select Spruce top" is their code word for Laminated. This is not a solid wood top guitar. Overall, it seems very strong, which is important for the extra stress 12's take. As for looks, you will not be disapointed.

Most important, sound. For a laminate topped budget 12 stinger, I feel the sound is really decent. Bear in mind that you will never get the depth as you will on a good quality solid top guitar. It is a bit thin compared to those. But overall, the sound is acceptable for most purposes. Intonation is spot on. I slapped a Seymore Ducan Woody HC on mine and play it through an acoustic amp. Doing this added lots of depth and volume. That and changing out the factory strings. If you are strumming, a thinner pick will generally get you a better sound on any 12 string.

Overall, a really good guitar for the price. There are times where you just need the sound of a 12, and this will get you there economically. While it will never compare with top end guitars, it is a 5 star guitar for budget lines.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is great! Bought it kind of worried about the neck.. With a 12 string guitar you've got to have a good neck to keep it from bowing due to all the string tension. This guitar did great, the neck is awesome. Great feel and easy to play. The strings are so close to the neck you barely have to apply pressure to note. This thing stays in tune for forever! Tune it now and a week later go pick it up and its still in tune. The pickgaurd looks black in the picture. It's actually dark red, but it looks great. This is not a cheaply made guitar. Can't tell at all its under 200. This guitar tops all my other more expensive ones and is now my favorite. If you have any doubts go ahead and buy it i guarantee you won't be disappointed. Hope this helps!

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

The moment I picked this baby up I knew I had to get it. I chose it as my first accoustic. It had an amazingly rich tone and a beautiful sort of glow. The tuners are very sensitive and every now and then I find myself needing to tighten them. Also, the low E string is very flat sounding after a while, I recommend buying a new set of strings when this happens. After breaking a string I became angry and turned it into a 6 string and it still sounds amazing. The only thing I would change is, I would cut away from the body to give easier access to the lower frets.

I waited a few weeks to leave this review because some reviewers said the guitar did not stay in tune. I don't have this problem. The one I got stays in tune very well, especially for a 12-string. This guitar for the price Musician's Friend is offering it is a steal. It could easily be sold for hundreds more, and it would still be a great deal. You won't be sorry for purchasing this 12-string.

I've had this 12 string a week now and I can't put it down! I've only been playing a few years but this guitar has brought me to a new level. I had thought that a 12-string would be hard and intimidating to play...maybe they are but not this Epiphone. Out of the box the action is excellent, and the sound is bright and full. After 2 days I changed strings (Martin Marquis 80/20)and I stuck with Light strings. Honestly, I'm playing tunes that I couldn't quite pull off before. Theres little or no learning curve...if you can play a six string, you can play this 12 string. (LOL i wish someone told me that years ago) I have a total of 7 (electric and acoustic) guitars and 3 of them are Epiphone This 12 string is my favorite guitar by far. I'll keep buying Epiphone guitars. I found the craftmanship on this guitar to be excellent, it looks good and the sound is reallly nice. The octave strings are not that much extra work to tune so don't let that stop you from getting this guitar! Don't hesitate, Get this guitar!!!

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

I found this guitar in a local music store used, but in perfect condition. For the money, i simply couldn't pass it up. It has a warm, rich tone that i was looking for in a twelve string. I might end up shaving the brigde down a hair, to make it that much easier to play. Other then that i couldn't be happier with my purchase

Wonderful guitar. Not my first one owned one back in the 1970's and this one is just as good. Great sound and the quality seems to be the best. I would compete with any guitarist with this instrument.

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

TLDR? - the short version is: I _really_ like this guitar...
A little more detail? see below...
Yes, I am an owner - see order #104498349

Comments about Epiphone DR-212 12-String Acoustic Guitar:

Bought this as a beater, it had a few Burrs on the tuners, one was a real mess, got it fixed and played it pretty much daily for 16-17 months, the real bad turner finally had had enough of this life and committed suicide and no longer exists..lol. I still would recommend this guitar to someone who can work a small file to clean up the edges. tone is a little sharp but for the price its a steal. about to buy another cheap 12 string may get the Ibby this time to compare, or may just grab another one of these. with the right strings its not a bad 12 string a lot better then any no name products I have played. I also have a Breedlove and I also prefer this neck for relaxing and just playing so ya take a chance on this one. its not all that bad with a bit of work.

Sounds like a 12 string 4 times it's price - really nice. It does need to have the bridge lowered and the neck adjusted to your type strings right out of the box, but after that this guitar really sings.... highly recommended!
