Having played jazz guitar for many years, I've had a chance to play some of the finest guitars ever produced for the genre. This guitar holds its own against some of the 5000 dollar-plus instruments I've had my hands on. I'm a little disappointed that they don't use a nicer grain for the back (Maybe a flame maple or birdseye would really put this guitar over the edge in quality) but overall it is extremely attractive and well made. The tone is outstanding. Reminds me of a friends early Benedetto (one of the cheaper ones that didn't have the hand carved AAA spruce on top) And I definitely find the tone much nicer than my ES-175 for Jazz. It's a student-priced jazz guitar that even a professional will be amazed by. I definitely recommend a higher guage of strings, though. The Nickel .11's that the factory ships it with makes it play like a dream, but are way to bright and don't show off the unbelievable volume and depth of the instrument.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

I am a professional musician and avid guitar collector. I am very much impressed with the Emperor Regent. It is a beautiful replica of the classic archtop guitars of the early jazz era. The stunning mother of pearl detailing, gold hardware and gorgeous natural finish really show the fine craftsmanship of this wonderful guitar. The sound breathes jazz and swing, and the electronics are exceptional and well positioned. Out of the box, the set up and intonation are right on.I performed with the Regent the same day it arrived and was blown away by the tone and playability. For the money, the Emperor Regent can compete with other archtops selling for much more, and I recommend this guitar for anyone looking for a true jazz legend. I am very pleased to include the Epiphone Emperor Regent to my collection!

Epiphone Emperor Regent

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

Overall this is money well spent. The guitar fits nicely into my collection.
The only thing I would say on a negative note is, Epiphone should take a closer look at their cases. For the money Epiphone charges for the matching case, it seems it would fit the guitar better.
I love this guitar and would buy another should something happen to this one.
Have wanted this guitar for some time. Was having a debate between this and the Broadway. Decided to go with the Regent. So far so good. I've had it just under a week. Have been playing it constantly. I changed strings right away. I put on 12g Martin strings but not sure it's what I want on it. It will take a little trial and error to find what works best for my playing style. Single p/u sounds good. Tone and volume knobs take some getting used to in the location they are on the pickguard.
The overall build quality on this guitar is good. First thing out of the box, I ran my hand down the frets to see how smooth a job they did at the factory. The fret work was very nice and smooth. I check for straightness of the neck. The neck was very nice and straight. Then I looked over the entire body for glue joint problems. Nothing major or outstanding. Good fit on all sides.
As far as the overall value of the guitar goes, I would have paid a few hundred more. I plan to replace the plastic nut with bone. I plan to replace the bridge. Other than those two changes the guitar is well worth the money spent.

Emperor Regent

By RayP

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

After a long debate on purchasing one of these guitars, I finally decided to pull the tigger. Guitar arrived yesterday, and after a pretty thorough review, it's a rather impressive value for the money. I already have 1 Epihone elitist (Chet Atkins) and 4 Gibson USA guitars (2x Les Paul standards, an ES135 and an SG Classic. The fit and finish as as good IMHO as anything I'veseen from the USA counter parts. I will agree with other reviews that point out the block inlays on the fret board are recessed slightly but this will not effect the action. The neck had an expected gradual bow, I like the neck a bit straighter, the truss rod adjsutment responds to adding or removing neck tension. The nut is reasonably well regulated, and intonation out of the box was actually pretty close. Pickup is suprisingly bright, for some reason I was expecting a bit darker tone. The Volume and Tone controls work fine (one of Epi's typical problems out of the box are typically tone and volume pots). Machine heads operate smoothly, as good as any grover heads I've ever used.I've read some reviews where players have had a problem with the location of the tone and volume controls getting in the way while playing, I just don't see this as problem. (granted everyone's attack is different)Action out of the box was playable, but a bit too high for my attack.Overall impression, if any one wants a guitar of this type, and doesn't have $5k to drop on a gibson L5, this is a no brainer.

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

I admit that I was a we bit skeptical when my local GC guitar maven handed me this guitar and told me to go play it in the high end sound room....Boy was I shocked at the beautiful sound, superb finish and sweet sounding pick ups......I never dreamed a Korean look alike would be this perfect...so I bought it...have had it 3 weeks and play it through my new VOX AC 15 because I had enough money left in my budget to by a new amp.Even my wife likes to listen to this guitar...mellow, sweet, full bodied... a very classy guitar....HOORAY & HIGH FIVES to the Epiphone Guitar people...well done !

great sound and great value

By Sunmanskarma

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

Epiphone Emperor Regent guitar-I wanted an acoustic electric. I own several acoustic only guitars and did not want to modify them. I got it cheap as last years close out. Wonderful guitar that performs as well as some of the more pricey units on the market. Not overly fond of laminate top but still sounds very good. A very good buy and highly recommended

What a Guitar The best ever

By Yumapilot

from Yuma, Az

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

I just recently aquired this great guitar and the sound and tone is beyond words. I play in a Classic Rock & Roll band and the very first time I played it the whole sound of our band changed for the better. By far the best guitar I own and I have all the standards like Les Paul, Strat, Rick, PRS and I will play this before any of the others. You have to try it and you will be a believer.

Better than Kalamazoo

By steveyoung903

from Earlville, IL

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

I purchased my Emperor Regent about 1 1/2 years ago. It has exceeded my expectations and is the best playing/sounding jazzbox I have owned. I also own an Epiphone Deluxe with a factory installed mini-humbucker c.196 one of the last ones to come out of the Gibson Kalamazoo, MI factory. I prefer the feel and sound of my Emperor to this beatiful antique. I did modify it a bit, by replacing the wooden bridge with a Tune-a-matic and the Frequensator tailpiece with a Byrdland style tailpiece. The sound is warm and the neck, after some adjustments for action(I use D'Aquisto D-220 nickelwound strings 12-16-22w-32-42-52) is just beautiful; a joy to play. Fit and finish are very good, the vintage SB well done. The 3.5 for quality was only caused by a faulty volume pot. The one on the guitar seemed to be a linear pot, either off or on. I replaced it with an audio curve pot and the problem was solved. I'm not the type to go nuts and send thing back for such a small expense. That was my only quality complaint. I've been playing for over 40 years and have played L-5's, ES-175's and others. I would recommend this guitar to anyone wanting a fine jazz archtop, whether beginner or experienced player.

a lasting joy

By Phoenix old jazz fan

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Epiphone Emperor Regent Electric Guitar:

I've owned an Emperor Regent for about 12 years. I don't play it as often as I used to- but every time it is a joy. It looks and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. They say that laminated tops don't age in, but to my ear it's improved significantly with age. I got mine from a shop and had to adjust the bridge height and placement- without much trouble- and intonation is great. I found that D'Addario "Chromes" flatwounds (.11's for me) have a great mellow jazz tone for this guitar- and are plenty long enough to use with the frequensator tailpiece. I usually have it tuned a 1/2-step below standard tuning. Tone is warm and fat though clear and bright, best when played through a heavier tube amp. Twelve years later, I still love this guitar and won't ever trade it for something else.
