OVERVIEW

Epiphone's Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO is a modern guitar with roots firmly planted in Epiphone's classic era when Epi's famed Kalamazoo factory produced rock's most legendary instruments in the late '50s and '60s. Featuring a reduced-size ES-style body and Epiphone's new P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickups, the ES-339 P-90 PRO semi-hollowbody turns back the clock while breaking new ground in sound and style. Case sold separately.

A Legend Reborn
First introduced in the late '50s, the original ES Series became an instant rock classic that brought the feel and look of an archtop to a generation of players who had grown up playing solid body guitars like the Les Paul. But for some, ES-style archtops felt too bulky to play on stage or in the studio. Now, the ES-339 P-90 PRO is the perfect remedy featuring smaller body dimensions while still retaining the bell-like tone the ES Series is famous for. And, just like Epi's nouveau classic ProBucker humbuckers, the P-90 PRO "soapbar" pickups are a stunning recreation of the first generation of handwound P-90s which many consider the best single-coil pickup ever made.

Solid Epiphone Construction
The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features a reduce-size laminated maple body with a solid center block like original ES-style classics and a black pickguard with metal "E" insignia. The mahogany SlimTaper "D" profile 24.75" scale neck has 22 medium-jumbo frets and is hand-set and glued with a mortise and tenon neck joint with Titebond glue. The 12" radius neck features a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a 1.68" nut. Single-ply cream binding on the fingerboard and body completes the classic look.

Introducing the new Epiphone P-90R PRO
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features Epiphone's P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickup, a true recreation of the first generation of P-90 pickups found in Les Pauls. Epiphone P-90R PRO single-coil pickups are individually voiced for rhythm and lead and provide a huge variety of sound choices for the modern guitarist. For those used to carrying two or three guitars to get all their favorite sounds, the Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 may be all you'll ever need to take to a gig from now on.

Epiphone's guaranteed electronics also include standard controls for each pickup's volume and tone with smooth black tophats with metal inserts, a tough 3-way toggle switch, and an all-metal heavy-duty Epiphone 1/4" output jack that gives you a lifetime of worry-free use.

Tough Epiphone Hardware
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features rock-solid hardware including Epiphone's LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece along with "Deluxe" tuners with tulip style buttons.

Classic shape and tone in reduced size.

This is a new guitar set-up from Epiphone with the addition of the p90's. Liked the range of the p90's so I'd gave it a chance (apparently mine is the first review). As stated fit and finish excellent I found no flaws. Natural was beautiful. Guitar was shipped out of Memphis which happens to be Gibson's home base where the semi-acoustic models are built. Wouldn't be surprised if they used Gibson's Plex system as their set-up is excellent (label said it was inspected and set-up in USA). If you want the coil splitters you won't find them on this guitar as they are single coil pups. Tone with P90's ranges from acoustic-like to down and dirty with a lot of variance in between, great range, great addition, excellent value. In addition to a number of other guitars I have a three year old Gibson Les Paul. The Les Paul is much more expensive but I would match the quality control on the Epiphone to it with the Epiphone having more tonal range. Hope this was helpful.

I ordered the Pelham Blue P90 Pro ES-339. Arrived reasonably on time (shipped to Canada), customs included so no surprises on delivery. Out of the box, the guitar looked stunning, neck was dead flat after tuning to pitch and needed some relief. The guitar intonated well at the twelfth fret but due to a plastic nut cut slightly shallow it was playing sharp at the first fret. Here comes the big disappointment though... the frets buzzed pretty badly at both the top (2nd-5th frets) and bottom of the neck around the 10-12th frets even with neck and bridge adjustments. Tuning stability was also not that great as one would expected with a plastic nut. The fretboard also felt a little sticky and the frets themselves were dull. Since the neck was dead straight and neck joint was reasonably well seated, I did the rocker test on the frets and a couple of them were high. I decided to opt for a fret job on the guitar (included reseating/pressing two frets and filing another one), and had a new Tusq nut installed (massively improving tuning stability and enhancing the tone). NOW, the guitar plays like a dream. The only minor thing left is slight rattle you get from the retention spring on the epiphone tune-o-matic bridge... but that is a common complaint for most epi owners (same on my 2012 Epi Les Paul Custom Pro and my Epi AlleyKat). The growling P90 pickups and unique look of the Pelham Blue model make it worth buying on sale even if you have to drop some money on setup/fret work. Best though to try one out at your local store to avoid major issues. I didn't bother sending it back to Musician's Friend as cross-boarder returns can be a huge headache. In the end, any foreign massed-produced guitar bought online runs the risk of having setup, fret, pickup, and/or wiring issues from being mass produced and shipping from humid/hot climates. Despite the issues I am still giving it 3.5 stars because it is so fun to play.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I compared this to my 1959 Les Paul Jr, which has one P90 in the bridge position. The older pickup was a little softer/rounder sounding, but there wasn't as big a difference as I thought there'd be. Conversely, I tried a Casino model with made in USA Gibson P90's, and preferred the Epiphone P90's, because they have a more vintage tone. I almost wonder if something was wrong with the new Gibson P90's; they sounded kind of muddy and shrill in comparison. The ES-339 P90 Pro is capable of a wide range of tones; and the pickups seems to be truer to the original tone of the P90.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

The Epiphone es 339 p90 pro is a great guitar. They do need a complete set up, nut, Truss Rod, fret polish, Fret ends, bridge adj. to set at action. Stop tailpiece adj. Once it's set up properly, they are a fine guitar. This is the case with just about any guitar that is mass made. They should raise the price and include a hard case, as they really need a hard case for protection. The tuners on this one work well, but my last one, had poor ,sloppy tuners. The new P90 pickups sound fine. I say" buy these guitars now, "as they are a limited edition. The natural color is the best choice for finish, as they always choose the best woods for that finish, A dark colored finish is always chosen for poor wood guitars, as it's easy to hide flaws.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I was intrigued by the small body and P90 pickups - my other main guitars are a Gibson 335 and Fender Stratocaster - I was looking for something different and possibly in between. The guitar is well made and the pickups sound good. The thing I couldn't get around was the "slim taper" neck. The neck is pretty narrow and I just couldn't get used to the narrow string spacing. I also thought that I would like the small body but I felt that I didn't have enough body to lay my picking hand arm on.

If you are thinking about buying one of these I suggest that you decide on a color and buy one now. Don't regret it in a couple of months when they are no longer available. The P90s are great and the craftsmanship on this guitar is well above it's price range. Out of the box it played great and didn't need a set up. I got the Pelham Blue and it sparkles like a classic car paint coat. The pictures don't do it justice. If you can afford it, get two! I imagine that these babies will be in high demand after they are all sold out.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Unless you are lucky, expect to have to do major fret work on your guitar. My example had serious fret buzz issues and had 13 high frets what had to be leveled. Unless you are able to do this kind of work yourself, this argues for getting the guitar from a dealer that will include this work as part of the purchase deal.

Once you get it set up correctly the guitar is very nice. The construction is very good - I could find no flaws in the finish or workmanship. And the P90's sound terrific. My only complaint is that my example does not seem to have the single coil mode - the volume controls don't have a push-pull function. This is not a big deal for me but it still would have been fun to try.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I'm a guitar player & repairman, this is a sweet little guitar, even has the old style Gibson Orange Label in soundhole. Reminds me of an original Epiphone Casino but better with the sustain block semi-hollow design so you don't get too much feedback. Vintage Kluson style tuners and D neck cut, finish is a true vintage Pelham Blue, with plenty of metal flake. Lively pickups, neck straight as an arrow. Hard to believe at this price with a set neck. You'll need to set it up, which I do all the time, but once you do it performs like 4 times the price.

Have had this guitar for nearly a year now before reviewing it. Right out of the box, Tuned it up and all ready to play. Neck action and intonation are right on and stays in tune perfectly. Pelham blue finish with antique cream binding is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in person. Checked over completely NOT a blemish at all could I find, No paint runs, Cracks, Etc. Exceptional fit and finish. The P90 pickups In this axe are the same as on the Les Paul 56 and Rock hard!!! Oasis songs sound spot on!! I have played and owned quite a few guitars in my 7 years of playing as I am a Gear junkie, Returned a Gibson Midtown for this and NOT disappointed at all that I did. Get a good one and it may become your new main axe!!!
