A country/rock classic plugs in.

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat’s Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb “woody” tone that’s full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the “Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.

I've had this guitar for less than a week, but I've owned and played many acoustic guitars, so I think I can give a fair review. First of all, this is a beautiful guitar. It's called "faded cherry," but it's more of a faded orange, which I actually like better. The finish is stunning. Everyone who's seen it loves it and/or is jealous.

Unlike many of the reviews I've read (on many different websites), mine was not "perfect out of the box." The action was set very low, but there was a lot of fret buzz on the low end (the "E" and "A" strings) and on the "B" string, especially on the 3rd and 5th frets. I contemplated returning the guitar, but I had already fallen in love with it and didn't want to wait for a new one (especially since they are/were out of stock), so I decided to see what I could do with it. I needed to loosen the truss rod a bit to get rid of the buzz, and, even then, the "B" string still had a slight buzz on the 3rd and 5th frets. I thought the guitar might have some dead frets, but when I put a new set of Martin SPs on, the problems with fret buzz on the "B" string, to my great relief, disappeared completely, so it must have been the factory strings. Still the action is a tad higher than some might like if they do a lot of lead playing up and down the neck. Since I often strum very hard and mostly play in the first few positions, it isn't a problem for me. It is still very, very playable, just not perfect. But, this is not a Gibson, so perfection can't be expected. The intonation is just about perfect up and down the neck, and the tone is great in every position on the guitar.

Speaking of tone, this guitar has a wonderful, full, warm tone. It's the best sounding acoustic guitar I've ever had, and I've had some more expensive ones. I can't say I've heard many, if any, acoustics that sound better. It projects well and, I think, has strong lows and ringing highs. It sounded good with the factory strings, but even better with a new set of Martins (medium/12's). And what really makes this guitar such a bargain is that it sounds fantastic plugged in. Many acoustics lose their "acoustic" sound when played through an amp, but the Hummingbird Pro retains its "acoustic" sound when plugged in, whether fingerpicking or strumming. They've done a fantastic job with the pick-ups. I just wish they would have used the version with the onboard tuner. I wouldn't have minded paying a little more for it. It would have been useful.

Overall, this guitar is a steal for the price. It is certainly not the quality of a Gibson Hummingbird, but that costs ten times as much. After reading 15 reviews about how they were perfect out of the box, I was a little disappointed with the fret buzz. After a little adjusting, though, I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to gig with it.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

First of all, this guitar is beautiful, and well finished. Feels like an Epiphone, slightly wide neck. Sounds like an Epiphone, that is, a rich tone with plenty of meat to it. This is easily the best guitar in this price range I've ever played. I got lucky I guess, I bought it unseen having never tried one, and I love it. This is my new go-to steel string, for now. 100% satisfied. I recommend Dean Markley Helix-X strings.

Beautiful attractive finish , color and pick guard.
Sounds great plugged in or unplugged.
It did take some tweaking to get it to were I was satisfied and happy though. Fortunately I have a lot of experience in that regard.
Overall a bargain at this price and compares to other similar guitars costing 3 or 4 times the cost.
            It's a keeper for me !
            I would give it a solid 4 1/2 stars, and I'am a fussy guy.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've owned the Epiphone Hummingbird Pro for 3 full months now, and still love playing it every day. I've noticed that the sound grows richer and unique to the tone-woods of the individual instrument with age. This is a precious thing to have with a guitar. It's only been three months and the difference is subtle, but I can certainly tell that it sounds better now that it's been played into, than how it sounded out of the box. I gave it 5 stars after 2 weeks of playing, and it's only improved since then.

It's tone is woody and mellow and it can still ring out a G or an E chord with a good punch. It has excellent range from the low tones to the higher tones. I think the low tones are more consistent than the high tones on my guitar, but HQ strings could improve that. It seems that note-bends in the middle frets on the middle strings are less defined than bends anywhere else on the neck, and adjusting the action may help.

Overall, a wonderful guitar to own for it's beauty and versatility.

I also own an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top and it is the sweetest electric I have played (within my affordable price range). I look forward to collecting more Epiphones.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

One note RE: scale length. I've read quite a bit about this guitar before buying it, and it seems that most of the info out there says the scale length is 25.5", even though the Epiphone site and customer service indicate 24.75". I'd been meaning to check mine and I finally did, and it is, in fact, 24.75".

Apparently - according to the internet - Epiphone has issued versions of this guitar with either scale length at various times, so YMMV.

Comments about Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

As I assume with many/most Epi Hummingbird owners, I've always dreamed of owning the Gibson version but it's just never in the budget. I needed an acoustic with a pickup and decided to give this a try.

I couldn't be more pleased. This is an absolutely beautiful guitar! The fit & finish is almost perfect - there are tiny cosmetic imperfections here and there, but nothing major, and nothing that I won't gladly overlook on a $3XX guitar that plays and sounds like this one.

The setup out of the box is nearly perfect - I haven't touched it yet, 3 weeks in. The strings were very fresh and the action is a good balance between playability and lack of buzz - though my guitar will get some buzz if I hit it hard, which I tend not to do.

The neck profile is a nice, chunky "D" which I find incredibly comfortable up and down the fretboard, for strumming or finger picking.

The tone has a nice balance - not thin sounding at all, and not dominated by treble or bass or midrange. This does not have a big, booming bass response - which is fine, as that's not what I was looking for - but it has plenty of warmth and depth. This guitar is beautiful in every way.

Much is made online about comparing Epis to their Gibson big brothers. It's not in any way an apples-to-apples comparison. A $3XX guitar vs. a $3000+ guitar is never going to be fair.

The real question is: what are you looking for from this guitar, and does it deliver? For me, this guitar is an absolute steal. It plays and sounds much, much better than a $3XX guitar has a right to.

So don't worry about what's on the headstock - far too many players are fixated on labels - and you may well find a guitar such as this that speaks to you. This guitar turns my crank in so many ways, and I could not be happier.

The guitar plays and sounds great. I am using it at actual live performances now on select tunes. The only issue I had was upon receipt the input for the cord was very loose and I had fun trying to get my hand inside of the body to tighten it up. Still a great guitar
