I bought a yellow one a year ago. I was interested in a lightweight shorter scale guitar as I mostly play Fenders, and also something I could work on and not worry about ruining. Out of the box it was OK, but it soon needed adjustments. The set bridge wasn't able to hold the tuning up to what my ears are used to, so I replaced it with a tunomatic bridge - this required plugging the holes of the old bridge with dowels and drilling new holes. While I was at it, I put on a surface mounted tremolo - both of these parts I got from a well-known internet discount supplier. So it worked OK for a while and then the tuners started slipping, so I replaced them with a set from the same place. Next, I found I was scratching the surface with my pick strumming so I bought a cheap black pickguard and cut it to fit. Then I repositioned the pickup switch, which my right hand was knocking off and on, so that it moves horizontally. Now the yellow guitar was working pretty good, but about 6 months later it got sloppy again and I had to adjust the truss rod and redo the intonation. But I couldn't get it exactly right so I took it to Shawn the guitar pro and he set it right! This guitar is very light, stays in perfect tune, looks great and the P90 pickups give it a unique sound compared to my other guitars. I do most of my practicing with it and have brought it on a few gigs. For just over double my initial investment I got some experience and a worthy instrument.

I bought this guitar to stash at church as a spare, a rehearsal instrument. Now that I've taken it apart and put it back together right, it might not go to church. Out of the box, it sounded lifeless. The gap at the neck heel was unacceptably wide, so off went the factory strings and the neck. When the neck came out, a chunk of the body's neck pocket came with it. Not good, but this is where inexpensive (and expensive) bolt-neck guitars seem consistently to be less than great. Clamps, Titebond, half an hour's filing. With the neck reinstalled & better wood-to-wood contact, the guitar came to life. I replaced the stock wraparound bridge with a lightweight Wilkinson wraparound unit, because I wanted the other bridge for another guitar, and I wanted to see what the Wilkinson might do for the Epiphone. FINALLY we are fully strung-up & action is acceptable, so the fun stuff can begin: setting the pickup height on the twin P-90s. Initial impression of pickups is positive. They are brash, like P-90s should be, but I think they will dial in nicely. I love P-90s, and it puzzles me that Gibson doesn't offer more varieties of it, the way every other serious pickup manufacturer does.... All in all a promising little bottom-feeder of a guitar, but I've been rebuilding bottom-feeders for 30-plus years, so if you're like me and you like Frankensteining cheap axes, this is for you. If you want something that will play nice right out of the box, this might not be for you. I give it three stars for the pickups.

Wonderful tone, good begnner's guitar. Can't be beat for the price. Upgrade the tuners, nut and the output jack and you'll have a guitar as good as any costing 4x the price.

This one of five Epiphones I own, I am yet to be disappointed. Frets well, controls work well, pickups are awesome, tuners are good and solid. Saddle / Bridge combination is not my favorite, but for a rhythm guitar it works OK. Great tone, I am very pleased. How do they do this at this price poiint????

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

For the price I was not expecting much, honestly. Boy was I surprised! The feel of the neck is fantastic, all the way up to the joint. While the frets could use some polishing, even the set-up was not bad. I bought this as a practice guitar but can see that it will be more than that. For lack of a better way to say it, this guitar feels right in my hands. From day one. Not sure how else to describe it. I recommend it highly.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I had been looking for a Les Paul style guitar and found the Les Paul Special P90 I on sale here on MF. I read through the reviews about how good it sounds and how poor the set up was, but over all it had great reviews. So I ordered one of the faded black ones on Sunday afternoon and it arrived Wednesday. The set up and strings are just horrible. I lowered the bridge probably a quarter of an inch, adjusted the neck relief and put on a new set of my favorite strings, Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 9-46. This guitar is a rock and roll machine! The P90's have a gnarly growl that is fantastic; maybe better than my really expensive P90 Telecaster. The neck is fast and has a nice feel. The guitar is really neck heavy and may need to have weight added to the body to help stop the neck dive. Reading around on the internet I read that the neck is regular mahogany and body is Phillippine mohogany (Luad wood) and is a very light wood. I really like this guitar and am tempted to buy another. It sounds that good!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I visited a local music shop specifically to try out this guitar because I was looking for a guitar with P90 pickups. No, I do not own this guitar; think about it though: only people who like the guitar would buy it, and so they would only give positive reviews.

I action on the guitar was sky high. It needed some heavy adjustment. I had trouble playing basic riffs. The frets were also in bad need of polishing. Doing bends felt terrible. They might also have needed leveling, but I wouldn't know because the action was so high it was impossible to get fret buzz.

The sound was what I've come to expect from P90 pickups. I played at low volumes and didn't experience any problems.

The tone pot was quite stiff, but it was in tact electronically.

Compared to my Gibson SG, the neck felt rather bulky. It was smooth, but it didn't feel nice to play at all.

All in all, the guitar is worth about what you'd pay for it. Get a guitar twice as expensive and it will easily be twice as nice. It would be a great beginner guitar, or would even work as a backup if you did some work on it first.

I bought one of these over the summer. Since then I have swapped out the tuners (yes, that required drilling) changed the bridge and replaced the pots. I thought it sounded good but I couldn't believe the sound now. I made the mistake of letting my grandson use it and I'm still waiting to get it back. But for the price, I may just buy another one.(Yellow) This a very good deal, if your not afraid of doing some work. You will have to learn to do it eventually. Enjoy

When will you have this in a dot finger board ebony for some more money? After fret fileling and truss rod adjustments over weeks of time this is showing the signs of a custom Gibson.

The neck need truss rod adjustments and you should ask how to do that, then the action came way down and will go lower in time with more adjusting and giving this its rest. All new guitars need setup. I like the P90 sound for such an affordable guitar I got what I wanted. I have made some guitars and I can't make one this good at home, other than actual materials. Someone complained of the wood on this, well it matches the pickups well enough to get"'the sound". I look forward to 1/16 inch action clearance in the future
