I should start by saying that I have had this guitar for over a decade. I'm not sure if the quality has changed since then, but the Les Paul Special II that I own is a rock-solid guitar for a fantastic price.

My first guitar was a nice Fender Strat (I know, I was lucky). When I wanted to start playing in my middle school's jazz band, I used my savings (in change) to buy this Epiphone to take with me to practice, since I didn't want my nice Strat damaged or stolen. This guitar lived in the shadow of my Strat for a long time. However, my tastes changed over time, and the 22 frets, thicker neck, and double humbuckers came into favor as I entered my high school metalhead years. The Epiphone emerged as my main instrument, and weathered many jam sessions with friends, bedroom and garage recordings, and the like. I probably have hundreds, if not thousands of hours worth of play time on this guitar.

This guitar has been knocked and beaten around, the electronics tampered with by my adolescent self, had beer and whiskey spilled on it and cigarette ashes have gotten into its nooks and crannies, and it has survived. It has overcome. Over ten years later, this is still a great guitar. I have grown, my playing skills have developed, and it has held fast as a quality instrument. I've had so many good times and have many great memories of jamming on this guitar with my friends and by myself.
The stock pickups on my Epiphone are incredibly good sounding - almost as good as the active EMGs on my friends' Schecter. The only guitars in this price range that I believe have stock pickups of this quality and tone are the various Ibanez models.

I've added a picture of mine as it is now - had to use tape an a permanent marker to cover up a sticker by the knobs that some might deem inappropriate...

If you're considering getting one of these as a first guitar, or a beater, don't hesitate. Buy this thing and rock out - it will serve you well.

I've been playing guitar for six years. Last week I saw this guitar and tried it out. I was immediately surprised by how well it played given the price. The neck is a little beefy, but not unbearably so. It was a bit hard to slide my thumb across the neck, but a smudge of polish would fix that. Pickups are decent, but you'll probably want to switch them out for better one's or buy a pedal. Honestly the perfect guitar for beginners, and a great beater for more expierianced. I usually play metal or punk, so the basic setup the guita has totally suited my style.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

I'm getting back into playing after a long time away from it and this guitar is perfect. I have experience, but I am starting again after about 20 years and this guitar feels and plays great. The only negative is, the strap button stripped out, I sent it back, got a new one and had the same problem on the second on. Musicians friend took care of me both times, great customers service. I have owned expensive guitars in the past and this feels like one of them, great value for the money.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

I'm a Strat guy but wanted a humbucker sound as well....this unit plays well and sounds great. The only con is bit of fret buzz on the 6th string, but that was easily fixed. It only has single volume and tone knobs but the three position switch does a good job with changing the tone. If you want a Les Paul sound but don'rt want to spend the hundreds or thousands more, this guitar will do you proud.

I have been a Fender fan for many, many years and always wanted a Les Paul. For the price, I couldn't pass this one up. Very glad I bought it. Very well put together guitar with good tone and feel. Best bargain for the money I have ever bought. It sounded great through my Fender Front Man, and even better through my Roland cube 80.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

How many times have you tried to find the 'right' guitar. Only to waste money over and over and over again (ask my wife - I have a wall of the things). Some of my guitars are (to me) expensive and I wanted a Les Paul. All the copies I tried were like a portable lumber yard, rough in hidden places and always 'a copy' not quite right but very expensive. Then I found the Special II.

The neck is great and the fretboard feels like polished ebony. No kidding, it's like - wow. The finish is superb and is standing up to use without the slightest glitch. For tonewood fetishists IT'S MAHOGANY it's not some second rate cheap, soft, tonally dead ply, that's if you believe the wood voodoo thing.

Pickups. I didn't end up with the AlNiCo V's (sad) I got ceramic but that said, hey, get the screwdriver out, use your ears through headphones and yes, you'll find sweet spots, you can hear them, find them and what is there to complain about - er - nothing.

String height, I adjusted mine, it's low, lower than my RG Ibanez, lower than the Pacifica, it's low.

String buzz, funny that, there is a thing at the top of the neck you remove and put an allen key in, and if you adjust it carefully, giving the correct relief, there is no fret buzz and wow, clean tone.

Pots etc - they are fine - they are full size pots beautifully wired (so neat!)

And it sounds, well, I use a POD and it really really sounds great.

I note complaints that it's a 'cheap guitar' but hey, does cost mean quality? Well to some, clearly yes, maybe you should buy one before Gibson put the price up to make it more desirable!

Cost doesn't necessarily mean that the wood felled in the night by some sweaty virgin whilst the tone doctor dances round an open fire sacrificing chickens and daubing it in blood will sound any better than the MAHOGANY that this guitar is made of. It certainly resonates.

Best buy I made, and I keep looking but, can't put it down.

I mainly purchased this guitar as an instrument to dedicate to an open tuning for playing slide but, man this axe could be used for any application. Great Looks, Very good sound, well made, nice balance and, feel. Mine is the Vintage sunburst and, I could not be happier with the way it looks. Out of the box it was almost setup perfect for regular playing but obviously I will raise the action a bit for playing slide. I am very satisfied with this instrument and, would recommend it to anyone.

I am a beginner, but here goes. I bought an acoustic, but really wanted an electric. I had planned to buy a more expensive model, but read the reviews on this one and bought it. I am glad I did, it feels great. and plays great. I purchased a blemished guitar. No need to be afraid of Musicians Friends blemished guitars. It said it had scratches on the back- well they are more like light rub marks. This is my second guitar( 1st was an Alvarez RD270 acoustic) from Musicians Friends - it will not be my last. Thanks.
