I should start by saying that I have had this guitar for over a decade. I'm not sure if the quality has changed since then, but the Les Paul Special II that I own is a rock-solid guitar for a fantastic price.

My first guitar was a nice Fender Strat (I know, I was lucky). When I wanted to start playing in my middle school's jazz band, I used my savings (in change) to buy this Epiphone to take with me to practice, since I didn't want my nice Strat damaged or stolen. This guitar lived in the shadow of my Strat for a long time. However, my tastes changed over time, and the 22 frets, thicker neck, and double humbuckers came into favor as I entered my high school metalhead years. The Epiphone emerged as my main instrument, and weathered many jam sessions with friends, bedroom and garage recordings, and the like. I probably have hundreds, if not thousands of hours worth of play time on this guitar.

This guitar has been knocked and beaten around, the electronics tampered with by my adolescent self, had beer and whiskey spilled on it and cigarette ashes have gotten into its nooks and crannies, and it has survived. It has overcome. Over ten years later, this is still a great guitar. I have grown, my playing skills have developed, and it has held fast as a quality instrument. I've had so many good times and have many great memories of jamming on this guitar with my friends and by myself.
The stock pickups on my Epiphone are incredibly good sounding - almost as good as the active EMGs on my friends' Schecter. The only guitars in this price range that I believe have stock pickups of this quality and tone are the various Ibanez models.

I've added a picture of mine as it is now - had to use tape an a permanent marker to cover up a sticker by the knobs that some might deem inappropriate...

If you're considering getting one of these as a first guitar, or a beater, don't hesitate. Buy this thing and rock out - it will serve you well.

I've been playing guitar for six years. Last week I saw this guitar and tried it out. I was immediately surprised by how well it played given the price. The neck is a little beefy, but not unbearably so. It was a bit hard to slide my thumb across the neck, but a smudge of polish would fix that. Pickups are decent, but you'll probably want to switch them out for better one's or buy a pedal. Honestly the perfect guitar for beginners, and a great beater for more expierianced. I usually play metal or punk, so the basic setup the guita has totally suited my style.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a steal for the price. It sounds great and doesn't lack much. I would recommend it if you're just looking for a reliable practice guitar to have fun with, or are looking for a first electric guitar. The only cons I found was that it often needs tuning, its tuning sucks, and can't produce certain sounds.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

This is a good choice for a first guitar in most areas. It has a nice, thin neck that's easy to play, and the sound is good in this price range. The fit and finish is pretty decent except for the fret edges. They are a bit rough but not terrible. The woodgrain on the body and neck is really nice and it's much lighter than a standard Les Paul. Playing it through a Vox Mini 5 amp, it sounds very good for the money. I really like its sound for heavier music like Metallica and Rush. Now for the bad. The worst part of the guitar is the tuning machines. They are garbage. They slip and are very "notchy" as you try and get the guitar in tune. The guitar needs to be tuned at least daily and sometimes every 30 minutes to an hour. This issue can cause new guitarists to get frustrated or discouraged. I liked the guitar enough to upgrade to Grover tuners. Problem solved. I got the guitar at MF for 20% off so I don't have much money in it and now it's a solid axe for the price and worth keeping for the long term. It's probably good enough to gig with and at this price, there's no worries about it getting some character marks on it while it's out in the dangerous world of smoke filled bars.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

I actually don't play in public, a little shy! This guitar also works great either way, out in public or in your home. I have a small music room in my home and enjoy playing this guitar. It's great for the price. Vintage Sunburst looks amazing, well built. Electronics are nice, Tone and volume work well, and it comes with a fairly good quality set of strings pre-installed. You just can't beat this guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

First of all, the positives: you are getting a very good guitar for your money. This won't be the "main guitar" for anyone with more than a few years of experience, but it's a very good starter instrument, and a reasonable backup. The neck and fingerboard are great, and of course the look is cool. This is a delightfully nasty guitar when pushed/distorted, although it basically has one sound. To me, the clean tone lacks, but I'm generally not a fan of the Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul clean sound (and at this price point you aren't getting split coils for those humbuckers). My other two gripes are the poor tuners (I replaced mine with Sperzel locking tuners), and I have never been a fan of the stop tailpiece (break a string, or retune one string, and it messes up the rest of them). But again: at this price, you can't beat this guitar, especially for a beginner.

I'm glad Epiphone is back on the market. I mostly play Fender products, but I also like this style of guitar. It has a great sound and playability is great! I play it through a small tube amp and the guitar still has the stock strings on it. I think Epiphone makes some beautiful guitars! Give this guitar a try. It is a really nice product.

I have been primarily an acoustic guitarist during my long career. But I do some recording by myself, and was in need of an electric guitar, so ordered this one. I am amazed at the quality for such little money. I will recommend this little guitar for my friends, as it plays very nicely and seems to be quality made.
