Got this beautiful Pelham blue guitar as a Father's Day present for my husband. I had read numerous reviews on this model and most were very happy with it. The great price was a screaming deal. As soon as he opened up the box he fell in love with it, the fine craftsmanship, great feel, and excellent sound. Initially he was thinking about getting a Joe Bonamassa version, but once he compared this version with it he realized it is virtually the same guitar minus the signature logo. He is particularly fond of the light touch of the strings and their flexibility. All in all this is a great addition to his lovely collection and will be a regular player for his private jam sessions. We have bought 9 out of 11 guitars from Musician's Friend and have always been incredibly satisfied with the excellent price and superb quality of the instruments. I also purchased my Yamaha keyboard from them as well over a year ago and am still having a blast enjoying this fine quality machine. Not once have we ever had damaged goods, and the delivery has always been fast. We are very satisfied with our purchases and will likely buy all our future instruments and accessories from Musician's Friend as well.

These aren't bad guitars for the price but you'ld better do your research and read between the lines. True, these do have a "solid maple cap". But it's only 1/16th inch thick.Same thing with the "solid mahogany" back, 1/16th mahogany veneer. What they put in between these veneers is determined by whatever is available at the time of production. It could be alder, mahogany or maple. Please don't misunderstand me. I own this guitar and I do enjoy it. And I don't dislike alder guitars...I have many. But... I bought them BECAUSE they were alder(Strats & Teles). Les Pauls are supposed to be maple cap and mahogany back, not some odd mix of whatever. If you want to hear it straight from Gibson/Epi Customer Service you will have to ask them several times and very specifically before they will give you a direct answer. And when they do answer honestly they do so only under the agreement that you won't show the e-mail to anyone else. There may actually be some maple/mahogany Epi LPs out there but the only way to know for sure is to cut it open. I did. The back is solid mahogany with a mahogany veneer over it. The cap looks to be alder with a maple veneer over it. I like my Epi LP Plaintop but...it's just an average LP Copy made of cheap woods covered with thin veneers hyped as the "real deal". It's not bad, but there are better copies out there. Look around, do some research, and know what you are buying.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I changed the pick-ups to "Bare Knuckles" after 6 months and then held a "blind" play test. I own the Epi and a Gibson. Of the 5 guys I invited; playing through both a Fender Blues Deluxe and a Marshall MG50..... 4 of the 5 preferred the Epi on the Marshall and 3 of the 5 preferred the Epi on the Fender amp. Not bad for a "cheap" guitar that everybody seems to hate. Guitar snobs is all I can say. Buy a really nice amp with the savings on the Epi over the Gibson !!! Gibson's just are not worth that kind of money.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I'm a bass player wanting to practice and play some rock guitar. I've a squire strat, epiphone dot, epiphone SG and Ashland acoustic. I want a good quality guitar, but at my level I can't afford gibson and fender.
I have other epihphones and wanted something with good quality, low action and lot of sustain. This guitar is great.
Great sound, very rock. Easy to play...I'm still coming to terms with tricky chords and bridge chords, but this has a good low'ish action, great for me.
I wouldn't know how to compare with a gibson, but this epiphone is fantastic and at £280 from thomman in Germany it's a steal.
I can't bear reading all this rubbish about Indonesian versions versus Chinese. Mine is a 2014, says made in Indonesia, but I trust epiphone quality and personally don't care where it was made.
I am very pleased with everything about the guitar. The pickup switch needed a little tightening, but that's all I could find fault with.
If you are learning, or even gigging at a moderate level this guitar is great. Maybe if you get to a high standard have a look at a gibson, but otherwise stick with this.
I don't know about cheaper les paul standard copies..court, satellite etc, but this has good quality for a reasonable outlay.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

TL;DR - Overall a great guitar for the money. I was more than happy with the restock condition and the only problems it has out of the box can be fixed with a pro set up.

I just wanted a guitar to play around with and not use for gigs. This fit the bill perfectly with a great price point. I got the restock model and was worried about looks and sound but the only cosmetic issue was that the master tone knob isn't set perfectly parallel to the body.

The only thing I recommend is that you get the action adjusted since there was, at least on mine, a decent bit of fret buzz straight out of the box. However, every guitar should get a pro set up anyway so this is to be expected.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I had an older model of this guitar and sold it. I regretted it and bought this as a replacement. Less sustain in the pickups. The toggle switch failed after a month. I got an Epiphone replacement switch. After not too long it failed too. I'm pretty happy with the guitar but angry about the switch.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

First of all, my review of Musicians Friend...
              * Free shipping from MF has always been fast - 3 days from time of order (and there have been several purchases).
              * Everything from MF has been packaged well and arrives safely (No surprises).
              * Everything has been better than as described in their listing (NO surprises).
I was skeptical with my first purchase but they have never let me down in any of these 3 areas....and that means a lot to me.

Second of all, my review of the Epiphone Les Paul.
              * Craftsmanship is very nice, appearance is excellent, and everything works properly. The joints, seams, and neck are all straight and true.
              * The Sound and Tones are far better than I expected (I have had a few Les Paul copies before and this one beets them all).
              * Weight, balance, and size are all very comfortable and it's easy to play for several hours at a time. (I have had others that felt like a cinderblock was hanging around my neck after a half hour).

Third of all, my review of this purchase...
              * This was a "RESTOCK" item and I was a little worried going into it because of what the description indicated could be coming...but there is not a scratch, dent, or blimish on it. All of the stickers, booklet, packaging, etc. where like new....I was quite surprised.
              * I did have to tune it slightly which is normal (Thinking that a guitar can travel across country via UPS and not need tuning is what's abnormal).
              * The Strings had a slight oxidation on them from not being played but that cleaned off easily.

However...I did decide to drop it off at my local music store the other day to have a professional Set-Up done to it......only because I felt a fresh set of strings were in order and since I never had a guitar before that I felt was worthy of sending the extra money on for a Pro Set-up...now was the time...this is the guitar.
I know how good this guitar sounded before and with a Pro doing his magic....I will have a dream guitar....all for under a tenth of the cost it would be going the other route.
Can't wait to pick it up.

This was my first electric so kind of daunting to get a handle on what would suit me best. Warm tone was important and seemed to be a strength of the LP. Reviewers warned about the weight of the guitar, man, they weren't kidding! But the sustain and sound more than makes up for it. Couldn't be happier w this purchase. Thanks MF.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

As a new guitar player, I was looking to get the best value for my money when buying my first guitar. After tons of research, the great reviews from other owners, and my preference for the design and sound of Les Paul guitars, this one was the winner. Sure, it's not a Gibson Les Paul. But at this price, it's a screaming deal. Plus, as a beginner, I don't know enough to recognize the tonal differences between the two nor do they matter to me at this point in my journey. Give me 10 years and then I'll get the real deal. But for myself and other beginners, this is the best quality for the money. Highest recommendation.
