Picked this Goldtop during one of the 15% off sales. Now, I have been playing gee...50 years give or take a few. Let me tell you this: I was once big time into what name was on the headstock. But it took many years to get me to really put all that nonsense aside and just examine any guitar the same. Does it look good? Sound good? Does it play well? How is the craftsmanship, etc.

This guitar is really nice. It plays as well as anything I have including some high end stuff. Most of how well it plays is in the set up and listen to an old player here, I don't care who made your new axe....it needs a pro set up. This guitar is just sweet. I have lots of guitars and every one, even the same models all sound a little different. Different is a good thing.

Also, I hear so many unknowing guys moan about anything that does not say Gibson or Fender on it that don't even know how to set up their amps!

And many can't play very well even if they think they do. Turn that distortion off and hear how sloppy their playing is....but they will blame the guitar.

Hey...If you put a cheap guitar in Claptons hands, we both know it's going to sound fine.

So if you don't need to spend a fortune on the name on the headstock....this is a super deal even without the discount. You don't need to swap the pick ups. Just learn to use your tone controls and you will be fine.

It's built in China, but so is your phone, your pc and just about everything else.

If you want a rock solid Les Paul Standard that won't let you down and wont drain your bank account, you can't beat this axe. Epiphone makes a good guitar.

These aren't bad guitars for the price but you'ld better do your research and read between the lines. True, these do have a "solid maple cap". But it's only 1/16th inch thick.Same thing with the "solid mahogany" back, 1/16th mahogany veneer. What they put in between these veneers is determined by whatever is available at the time of production. It could be alder, mahogany or maple. Please don't misunderstand me. I own this guitar and I do enjoy it. And I don't dislike alder guitars...I have many. But... I bought them BECAUSE they were alder(Strats & Teles). Les Pauls are supposed to be maple cap and mahogany back, not some odd mix of whatever. If you want to hear it straight from Gibson/Epi Customer Service you will have to ask them several times and very specifically before they will give you a direct answer. And when they do answer honestly they do so only under the agreement that you won't show the e-mail to anyone else. There may actually be some maple/mahogany Epi LPs out there but the only way to know for sure is to cut it open. I did. The back is solid mahogany with a mahogany veneer over it. The cap looks to be alder with a maple veneer over it. I like my Epi LP Plaintop but...it's just an average LP Copy made of cheap woods covered with thin veneers hyped as the "real deal". It's not bad, but there are better copies out there. Look around, do some research, and know what you are buying.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I have had this a few weeks now and have been happy with the guitar. I must state that the guitar upon delivery did not play too well. I had to adjust neck - intonation - string height - pick up height as well as change of strings. After about 3 days of trying to dial it in it finally came around.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I was a service manager at Guitar City in LA when I was 25. For the price I paid for this guitar I think this is one of the best guitars for the money I ever bought. It weighs 8.2 lbs. I had a set of custom wound pickups that I thought I would have to change to over. No way. These people that are giving these pickups a bad name are probably using a cheap amp. I have no need to change these pickups out. You do need to do a good setup. I did have to lower the G string but that's a common problem. I have a set of Ibanez files and the nut didn't cut like it was plastic. These are my thoughts on this guitar and I use to own an Elitist and two Agile 3000's.

This was a Christmas gift for my 16 year old son. He was extremely pleased with this guitar. We looked at the stores prior to buying this and it was a toss up between the Les Paul and the Gibson SG-J. I bought this because I knew he would like the black and white color design. I cannot speak about tones and sounds, I just know he really loves it.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

This is probably the best all around guitar for those of us in the real world who can't justify spending thousands on a guitar. The intonation was almost perfect and only had to lower the action slightly. I read about some people complaining about the pickups sounding muddy ....they sound fine to me ....I would guess if it doesnt sound like you want it is probably operator error.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar:

I am making a comparison with the Gibson Les Paul Standard of the past. I own a 1965 Gold Top, and a 1975 Cherry Sumburst models. Both are pricey and excellent axes ! I enjoy playing them.

I also own a 1995 Cherry Sunburst Epiphone Les Paul Standard. The craftsmanship and electronic performance is comparable to the Gibson Les Paul for 1/3 of the price (or more) of owning the Gibson model.

I just purchased this new 2013 Epiphone Les Paul Standard Gold Top guitar. The craftsmanship is as good as its counterparts. My guitars are all pro-set....fast string action, and the intonation is custom set...The 3/4 neck I believe feels better than the Gibson neck.

Both Epiphone Les Paul Standard guitars are great axes for any occasion ! If You decide to purchase one, you will get more bang for the buck, though the Gibson holds a higher resale price.

For the money, this is a great guitar. My only gripe with Epiphone is that their humbuckers sound muddy. So, on the two Epiphones I have, I've replaced the pickups. The action is easy to get in order and this thing is really fun!

I had this guitar for almost a year and I enjoyed it, although i felt the stock pickups were just OK. So i dropped an EMG 81/60 combo into this guitar and it was like giving this guitar steroids. There is no beating that warm mahogany sound.
