OVERVIEW

A mahogany body, a hard maple top and Gibson's '57 pickups with series/parallel switching.

Epiphone's long friendship with innovator Les Paul dates back to the late '30s and early '40s when Les and fellow guitarists such as Charlie Christian and George Barnes were at the forefront of jazz guitar. Epi Stathopoulos and Les were good friends and Epi would let Les use the Epiphone factory on 14th Street in New York City at night after hours to experiment on guitar and pickup designs. This also was the era when Les, inspired by the stinging sustain heard in electric steel guitars, began dreaming of making a solidbody guitar. He built his first, the legendary "Log," at the Epi factory in 1941. Over the years, Les continued to work closely with Epiphone luthiers, reviewing new product ideas and offering suggestions.

Now, the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus honors Epiphone's friendship with Les by combining his classic design features with legendary Epiphone quality and value with the added power of Gibson USA '57 Classic humbuckers. But this guitar is not just about recreating the "old," it's also about looking ahead, just as Les himself continued to do throughout his lifetime. Using 4-conductor pickup wiring, Epiphone has added two push/pull tone pots to allow for series/parallel pickup switching. The result is a Les Paul with all the standard sounds plus a huge palette of tonal possibilities at your fingertips. The Les Paul Tribute Plus also features Epiphone's famous built-to-last hardware and electronics including a U.S. Switchcraft 3-way toggle, Mallory-150 tone capacitors, Epiphone StrapLocks, 16:1 ratio premium Grover locking tuners, and a premium hardshell case.

  • Resonant mahogany body with Classic Les paul design

I wanted a Les Paul model guitar, but can't afford a Gibsonn. I did some research on the Epi Les Paul Tribute and liked what I read. Let's get right to it, starting at the top: It has Grover locking tuners and so far I have not had any tuning problems. It has a cool truss rod plate that reads "Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus". The only thing I didn't like was the thickness of the finish on the back of the head stock that prevented me from deciphering the serial number that is stamped into the wood. Luckily the serial number was on the shipping box in two places. The neck is the "C" shape thin neck and is easy to play. I have small hands and it fits me perfectly. The strings are .10 - .46. The body is real mahaogany and is not chambered. The top cap is real carved maple, not a laminate. I got the midnight ebony color and it is a tranparent finish to showcase the flamed maple finish of the wood. The only problem with the finish is it appears to have two small sand marks made before the finish was applied. Not very noticeable and it makes my guitar different from anyone else's. The pickups are USA Gibson 1957 humbuckers. I play through two amps - a Fender Twin Reverb reissue and a Fender Frontman 25. The sound from the humbuckers are amazing. I get the full, mellow sound through the clean channel which is what I was looking for. The tone pots are push/pull to take the humbuckers out of parallel to make it sound like single coil pickups. The knobs are black speed style knobs and look great with the black finish. I put the guitar on an electronis scale and it registered 8.6 pounds. The only thing I don't care for is cosmetic in nature. I don't care for the creme pickup rings and the creme selector switch plate. That is a personal preference and nothing to do with the fit, finish or performance. For all intents and purposes this guitar is a Gibson with an Epiphone headstock. I am really pleased with the effort Epiphone went to for this guitar. I play it every day. This one is a keeper.

When I asked MF rep initially, he said they looked at the guitars before sending them out. Then, it came to me with a broken pot. Called, got return, and asked if this was a common problem with the model and was told NO. Replacement not shipped, called to find order not put in two days later. Then I got a different color since they sold out of the first. No worries- Cherry and Sapphire are both great looking btw. Finally got it again a week after that- same pot is broken on the new guitar, but not shorted like the other so not in need of soldering. I find the replacement on line to see its construction, look under the hood, and see that the one in the guitar had broken into two parts (stem from other piece) and never could have held to the body in its condition. I was able to put the pot together after perusing the internet to see how it should have been assembled in the first place. Be careful to protect the holes with the plastic initially used around them on the outside of the guitar to keep the finish nice when you reinstall the pot. It works fine now, but the USA electronics by Gibson seem to boast a faulty potentiometer that looks allot like inexpensive ones sold online. Others have noted this problem with the pots on this guitar. Two faulty pots in a row does not suggest an isolated problem. All in all this is a pretty nice guitar, but there are quality control issues with some of the minor stuff so it is good if you are handy or do not mind being a regular at the UPS facility in your area. Very nice guitar otherwise-but my experience was not good initially. I will better be able to evaluate it after a more prolonged period of use. I had previously never experienced problems with other Epiphone guitars, and this model is unique and may be worth the effort. In the worst case, if you are handy and can solder a little, worse come to worse, a better quality pot is inexpensive and easy enough to replace should you need to down the road.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I was blown away by the wicked AAA matched-top black cherry finish and the guitar's essential qualities (PUPs, Tuners, Finish, Neck, Set-Up), and somewhat disgusted with some of the hardware and electronics (bridge and stop -bar screws, stripped cover plate holes, all pots slopped and hats off or loose, toggle switch slop in set screw top). What can I say? I took a risk after getting 3 satisfying Gibson Studios and 1 SGJ, and bought my first bound LP with an Epi. While Gibson doesn't seem to be free of quality control issues in its American-made lower-end axes, this guitar was too sloppy a build even for a Condition Level 2 price, which is what I got. Still, aside from the fact that I have to take it to my luthier over the pots, and will upgrade them to better ones while bothering to repair them, I wish they could get the whole ax right the first time around. It's still a keeper, but it's just annoying to have to fix easy original-build quality control issues. I mean, they got everything HARD right and messed up the EASY stuff like finishing a long tedious project drunkenly or something.......ugh. Probably will give this one some TLC because it's worth it for what I paid. Also will not buy another one any time soon. I will buy a Standard next, but not by this maker. It's just too bad they could not get the whole thing right! Just did not make sense to me after all they did that was outstanding crafting. That's why it got four stars, not five. I could have been mean and given it three, and still been fair. However, it is beautiful cosmetically, and mostly built right.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

Looked beautiful when I unpacked. Then found the high E string was underneath several of the frets and pulled up the frets. I pushed the frets down with my fingers but it did not lower the frets enough to use the first 5 frets of the High E string. Also both of the tone pots were scratchy. No amount of usage fixed the noisy pots. I have returned it MF. Not going to get a replacement

6 Months of Research--I Bought One of These--No Regrets

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, mostly acoustic or classical and was asked to play electric guitar at my church. I had a MIM Strat that I liked, but I wanted a guitar with dual humbuckers so I researched electric guitars for 6 months. When I say research, I mean that I went to several stores to try out different models and spent hours pouring over forums and talking to other musicians (I'm a school band teacher as well). The Epiphone Tribute Plus kept coming up as a great guitar with a low price tag. I was fortunate enough that someone had a used one close to a gig I was playing and when I tried it I was hooked. The person I bought from purchased it about 6 months prior and then decided after a few hours of playing on it that he liked his Strat better due to the fact that the Epi is indeed heavy. I find it to be heavy, but comfortable and one of the most solid instruments I've played. The fit and finish were flawless, the guitar is beautiful but also a workhorse. I tried Gibson, Epiphone, PRS, Schecter and a bunch of others but I liked this better. The electronics are second to none, the Grover tuners, smooth and solidly keeps tune, the Gibson pickups sound amazing and give me all the tones I can ask for. I wanted a reasonably priced Jack of All Trades for worship music, classic rock, blues, jazz, country and a bit of metal and this does what I need to do. For the price you get a solid guitar with upgraded pickups and electronics, a hard case, grover tuners and all the bells and whistles is more than reasonable.

After trying out dozens of instruments and doing the research for 6 months, I'm very happy with this guitar. Solid, amazing tone and feel for a price that is hard to beat.

This is a great guitar for those that want a Les Paul but can't afford two grand for a Gibson. I have had this LP for two years now and love it. The tone from the Gibson '57 pups is the best! Love the different sounds you can get with the Neck and Bridge pups along with the Push-Pull coil tapping. The quality is near perfect. The neck feels great. Just a great guitar.

Have you ever noticed that you never see these for sale in the guitar shop? That's because those of us that have one will never give it up. And if one does end up in the store, it'll be sold in a day.

Be sure to do the math...

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I have to say MF is solid on their action as a on line store. No issue here on my purchase of the EPI LP Tribute. Only 4 stars because of the workmanship of the EPI. Way to much fret buzz, frets not polished on many frets. Fret buzz on frets 1-3 due to high frets not being oned down to the proper height. But this is an EPI not a Gibson. I own a Gibson and no work needed, but the EPI will need some work, Now for the good news. Impressed with the feel and sound of this guitar. Smooth volume and tone controls with no scratching. Switch work perfect. The finish is near perfect. I can barely tell where the binding and wood attach. Tuning is spot on. The sustain is fantastic and also the Single Coil splitting is fantastic. Would I buy again , Oh yes in a second. Buy this guitar with confidence.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

After having sent the first one back to MF because of stain on the neck binding and they said it was new, but was actually an open box, I received my present Epi LP Tribute and I can't put it down. I have owned other Epi LPs and Gibson Studios and a Standard. This LP is in the quality range of the Gibson Studio and right next to the Standard. In fact, I like the Epi Tributes 57 pups better than the 490 and 498s on the Standard. They have a more versatile sound range. The neck on the LP Tribute is perfect and the finish, color etc. is excellent. The only con it had, is that the frets were a little rough. A light sanding helped. Look, if you are not convinced by this and other reviews, remember it's 1/3 the price of a Gibson Standard. MF readily and conveniently helped me get the original LP Tribute back to them.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

The guitar was very nice except for stain marks on the neck binding which was my first hint that MF had sent me an open box instead of a new guitar. As I looked further, the second hint was that the box was ripped and it's corners were mashed. The box looked like it was old and had been through a hurricane. One of the ends had the original tape and the headstock end had brown packaging tape over the original tape and that was hint three. Then the case had a long scratch in it which was hint four. This was the second time that MF had sent me an open box rather than a new guitar. I sent it back. So my critique is this. Be wary of what you get from Musician's Friend. Demand new equipment.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

When I see a blem for sale I am both intrigued and cautious. But comparing the stellar features of this beauty against the reduced price, coupled with some knowledge of guitar repair and maintenance, I took the chance. There is a crack in the vulnerable head/neck joint, as is sometimes seen in Gibson-style axes, but it had apparently been re-glued. I cleaned up the sloppy paint job in the area to reveal the original clean finish, and touched up the crack line. Seems good as new. The rest of the guitar's appearance and operation was flawless.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

OK; I have Gibson's and I have Epiphones. I know what to expect on each. I have always felt Epi's are a good value in their price point. My oldest is a 1996 g400, and others up to 2013. I have Gibson's (Les Pauls and a SG) 1999, 2009 and 2015. This is truly as good as any Les Paul Studio I have owned, and quite frankly better overall.
I hesitated for a while, but I say if you are torn between a Gibson Les Paul Studio and this guitar, don't hesitate. You will like this guitar.
The tone is pure Gibson, and the neck is better than my 1999 Gibson LP Standard. I have read some of the negative comments and all I can say is that the one I received didnt have any of issues they describe.
The build quality, feel and tone are excellent and more than I expected.
                Go for it.
