Epiphone

A mahogany body, a hard maple top and Gibson's '57 pickups with series/parallel switching.

Epiphone's long friendship with innovator Les Paul dates back to the late '30s and early '40s when Les and fellow guitarists such as Charlie Christian and George Barnes were at the forefront of jazz guitar. Epi Stathopoulos and Les were good friends and Epi would let Les use the Epiphone factory on 14th Street in New York City at night after hours to experiment on guitar and pickup designs. This also was the era when Les, inspired by the stinging sustain heard in electric steel guitars, began dreaming of making a solidbody guitar. He built his first, the legendary "Log," at the Epi factory in 1941. Over the years, Les continued to work closely with Epiphone luthiers, reviewing new product ideas and offering suggestions.

Now, the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus honors Epiphone's friendship with Les by combining his classic design features with legendary Epiphone quality and value with the added power of Gibson® USA '57 Classic humbuckers. But this guitar is not just about recreating the "old," it's also about looking ahead, just as Les himself continued to do throughout his lifetime. Using 4-conductor pickup wiring, Epiphone has added two push/pull tone pots to allow for series/parallel pickup switching. The result is a Les Paul with all the standard sounds plus a huge palette of tonal possibilities at your fingertips. The Les Paul Tribute Plus also features Epiphone's famous built-to-last hardware and electronics including a U.S. Switchcraft™ 3-way toggle, Mallory-150 tone capacitors, Epiphone StrapLocks, 16:1 ratio premium Grover® locking tuners, and a premium hardshell case.

I wanted a Les Paul model guitar, but can't afford a Gibsonn. I did some research on the Epi Les Paul Tribute and liked what I read. Let's get right to it, starting at the top: It has Grover locking tuners and so far I have not had any tuning problems. It has a cool truss rod plate that reads "Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus". The only thing I didn't like was the thickness of the finish on the back of the head stock that prevented me from deciphering the serial number that is stamped into the wood. Luckily the serial number was on the shipping box in two places. The neck is the "C" shape thin neck and is easy to play. I have small hands and it fits me perfectly. The strings are .10 - .46. The body is real mahaogany and is not chambered. The top cap is real carved maple, not a laminate. I got the midnight ebony color and it is a tranparent finish to showcase the flamed maple finish of the wood. The only problem with the finish is it appears to have two small sand marks made before the finish was applied. Not very noticeable and it makes my guitar different from anyone else's. The pickups are USA Gibson 1957 humbuckers. I play through two amps - a Fender Twin Reverb reissue and a Fender Frontman 25. The sound from the humbuckers are amazing. I get the full, mellow sound through the clean channel which is what I was looking for. The tone pots are push/pull to take the humbuckers out of parallel to make it sound like single coil pickups. The knobs are black speed style knobs and look great with the black finish. I put the guitar on an electronis scale and it registered 8.6 pounds. The only thing I don't care for is cosmetic in nature. I don't care for the creme pickup rings and the creme selector switch plate. That is a personal preference and nothing to do with the fit, finish or performance. For all intents and purposes this guitar is a Gibson with an Epiphone headstock. I am really pleased with the effort Epiphone went to for this guitar. I play it every day. This one is a keeper.

When I asked MF rep initially, he said they looked at the guitars before sending them out. Then, it came to me with a broken pot. Called, got return, and asked if this was a common problem with the model and was told NO. Replacement not shipped, called to find order not put in two days later. Then I got a different color since they sold out of the first. No worries- Cherry and Sapphire are both great looking btw. Finally got it again a week after that- same pot is broken on the new guitar, but not shorted like the other so not in need of soldering. I find the replacement on line to see its construction, look under the hood, and see that the one in the guitar had broken into two parts (stem from other piece) and never could have held to the body in its condition. I was able to put the pot together after perusing the internet to see how it should have been assembled in the first place. Be careful to protect the holes with the plastic initially used around them on the outside of the guitar to keep the finish nice when you reinstall the pot. It works fine now, but the USA electronics by Gibson seem to boast a faulty potentiometer that looks allot like inexpensive ones sold online. Others have noted this problem with the pots on this guitar. Two faulty pots in a row does not suggest an isolated problem. All in all this is a pretty nice guitar, but there are quality control issues with some of the minor stuff so it is good if you are handy or do not mind being a regular at the UPS facility in your area. Very nice guitar otherwise-but my experience was not good initially. I will better be able to evaluate it after a more prolonged period of use. I had previously never experienced problems with other Epiphone guitars, and this model is unique and may be worth the effort. In the worst case, if you are handy and can solder a little, worse come to worse, a better quality pot is inexpensive and easy enough to replace should you need to down the road.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I'll keep it simple: I purchased one of the used ones, came with a new case. I have many years experience as a luthier, it needed a good setup and new strings. The weakest point on this instrument is the bridge, it doesn't match the quality of the rest of the instrument. I had a new Gotoh nickle bridge in the shop and installed that. But you know what, for the price you can't expect top quality on everything. I removed the neck pickup, to look at the wood, nice big chunk of maple under the veneer. I've owned several Les Pauls.. tonewise and playability this guitar matches up to any Gibson I've ever owned. Sustain is forever, the pickups are great sounding.. yes, there are small details that don't match up to the made in USA Gibsons, but the important parts are all there. Take my advice, if you're inexperienced at setting up an instrument, get the guitar professionally setup. All new guitars need to have this done, tell the repair person to check the string height at the nut.

Bought this as Condition 2 / Very Good.
Website pics hinted at scratch across front, under neck pickup. Have had for several months, still cant find the scratch.
Black Cherry finish is amazing. Not the (big brother) Les Paul,, but still, Epiphone did an excellent job.
Packaged well no damage. Broken pot when I opened it. Got it fixed at local music store(VERY REASONABLE).
Looks great, Sounds great, Plays great.
      Thanks MF..

bought this guitar a few months ago. im blown away by how inexpensive this guitar is for the hardware thrown into it. to get a Gibson of this level your looking atleast 2000$. pick ups and coil taps with a huge tonal array. as far as im concerned this is a must have guitar! I play mainly rock/blues.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

Had this for 3 months now. You get great wood and craftsmanship for the neck and body, hands down excellent! Good finish on mine also. The Gibson USA P.A.F's rock enough said there. The rest of the electronics are also very worthy. What Epiphone skimped on to sell you these for the lower than Gibson price is the lack of fret work. The frets on all these that I have come across need some leveling, crowning, and then polishing. They did use good fret wire. Mine had 4 high frets. You or someone else will just have to do a little work is all. The Grover locking tuners are terrible. They slip when you bend and when you bend big they slip bad!! The worst! I use Grovers on all my guitars just not these locking ones. Grover must of gave Epi a deal on these tuners, but Epi did not seem to charge you for them if you add it all up. Overall I say buy this guitar because you don't have the money for a Gibson. It will sound great when you put new tuners on it and do some fret work, adjust the action, and intonation. I play mine through a Carvin XV112E 100 watt tube amp when I play with band and a Marshall Valvestate VS65R when I just want to practice alone at lower volume. This guitar really sounds great through both amps but really shines through the tubes! Rock On!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I really wanted to love this guitar. From the time I ordered it until it arrived, I watched every YouTube Video I could and did my research in anticipation of a top quality instrument. The guitar came through in every area but one - craftsmanship.

I received the guitar and immediately tuned it up and began playing. Within one hour of it's arrival I discovered what appeared to be two cracks in the binding at the 12th fret. I looked close at them and they were under the finish which told me the binding was probably cracked before the finish was applied. Upon further inspection I discovered 6 of the same type of flaws on the Low E side of the neck and then turned to the High E side and saw 7. This was a real let down!

I called MF and they were very nice and apologetic about it. They offered to discount what I paid or send me a brand new instrument in place of the one I had. In short, I just decided to get a refund.

I know I probably just got a lemon; one that slipped by Quality Control Inspection and the overall consensus is good on these guitars. Everything else on the guitar was flawless and great. I might try it again in the future, but I will need to find one in a store that I can personally inspect and play. Doing it via internet has tied up two weeks of time and I am still waiting for my refund to come back (which I am sure it will). But I need my funds to buy something else

This is the second Tribute Plus I've bought. The pickups, electronics and finish are great for the price. Sustains well, and just needed minor intonation and action adjustments. Upgraded switch and series/parallel wiring AND a Hardshell case makes this the best "bang for your buck" Epiphone available. Don't hesitate, buy one.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

This guitar really surprised me. I have owned Epiphones in the past and while I always enjoyed the feel and the tone they always seemed to be plagued with fret problems. NOT this one though. I picked mine up used level two and there was very very minimal signs of wear. First thing I checked was how level the frets were. Nice and level and well polished. Good solid build with a nice flame maple (veneer or not it looks great in midnight sapphire). The Gibson 57 Humbuckers paired with Mallory caps just sound great. Nice and chunky in humbucking and tight and jangly when split. This guitar sounds great clean, even better fattened up with some crunch and sings with some nice saturated distortion. The body is hefty but well balanced and the neck is a nice taper that just feels good in the hand. All and all I have to say that I am really enjoying this guitar. MF was awesome and super quick getting it sent, always a pleasure doing business with them. If you are in the market for a nice Les Paul style guitar but you don't want to put out big money for a Gibson, this is a great guitar. I would not feel self conscious in the slightest taking this to a gig. Once you plug it in and crank her up No One is going to care what the head stock says when it sounds SOO good.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

Bought my first guitar at age 15 at a pawn shop. My first real guitar was a Gibson EBO bass two years later. At age 22, after I got out of the Army, I got with friends and started jamming and playing a bit here and there. Bought a Fender Precision Bass ( traded for a Jazz bass later) and a used Gibson Les Paul, black with gold hardware. Times marches on. After many other guitars and 4 decades flew by, I am now retired and have some time on my hands. I only play for my own amusement for the most part, but enjoy quality instruments. Right now I have a Gibson EDS 1275 in cherry red, Gibson Les Paul Goldtop bass, most of the same type guitars played by the Beatles from the Hofner bass, Rickenbacker 335, Epiphone Casino (JL tribute) Gretsch Duo Jet, and the prize, a Fender custom shop Rosewood Telecaster. There are others, but this review is about the Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus guitar. I've had it a couple of years have found it to be an exceptional instrument. I wanted a Gibson Les Paul, but with my others, I didn't want to invest that much in it at the time knowing it would see limited playing time. I ordered the midnight ebony and it looks as good as it plays and sounds. For all the years and all the guitars I've owned for the past 48 years, this has got to be the best value overall. Often, you get what you pay for, but with this guitar, you get a lot more than what you pay for. I own 3 Epiphones and they are all quality guitars at affordable prices.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

Gibson Les Paul sound from an Epiphone! If you don't have enough money to buy a Gibson Traditional, get this because this sounds like one. It also includes a case so this really is bang for the buck!

I have this guitar for two years now and still continue to like it even more.

I like the vintage tone and the playability. I also like that it has coil tapping because it gives me some flexibility if I want a thinner/single coil tone.

This guitar gives you a massive sustain! I think this Epiphone Les Paul has longer sustain than my Gibson '08 LP standard.... no joke!

We've used it to record my band's album. (We initially used a guitar with EMG 81/85 pups but we decided to redo the recording with this Les Paul because this sounds better!).
I regularly use it during gigs :-)
