OVERVIEW

A rock classic returns with a solid spruce top.

This modern Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric is one of rock-n-roll’s most revered guitar designs with a solid spruce top and an Epiphone Stacked P-100 pickup.

The original “J-160E” was one of the first acoustic-electric guitars on the market when it was released in 1954. Over the decades, the “J-160E” has been embraced by a wide range of artists, both classic and contemporary, such as Lightnin’ Hopkins, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and John Lennon. In fact, the “J-160” acoustic-electric was the only guitar to appear on every Beatles album from Please Please Me through Abbey Road. Now with the Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric, the “House of Stathopoulo” brings this vintage and hard-to-find classic into the 21st century with a solid spruce top for a limited time.

Solid Spruce: The King of Tonewoods
Just like the original, this Epiphone Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E follows the contours of the industry standard “Southern Jumbo” acoustic and features a solid spruce top with a select mahogany body. Solid spruce is the “top” of choice for premier acoustic guitars. The more you play your EJ-160E, the more open and expressive the tone—so play your EJ-160E a lot. The body top has 5-ply ivory/black binding while the select mahogany back has single-ply ivory binding. The pickguard is imitation tortoise with the '60s era “E” metal logo. The EJ-160E’s bridge is made from rosewood and has the reverse belly design familiar to “J-160E” collectors and features a compensated bone saddle.

The select mahogany neck has a comfortable “1960s” SlimTaper D-profile and is glued to the body using a dovetail joint. The neck has a 24.75 in. scale with a rosewood fingerboard with vintage-style pearloid “Trapezoid” inlays just like the original models. The fingerboard has single-ply ivory color binding and features a 12 in. fingerboard radius, 20 medium frets and a bone nut along with the Epiphone classic Sloped Dovewing headstock.
Revolutionary Electric Sound
What made the original J-160E so renown was its unique pickup system, and to bring that sound back to life for the 21st century, this Epiphone Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E features an Epiphone Stacked P-100 humbucking pickup at the end of its fingerboard. The Epiphone Stacked P-100 pickup is seated discretely between the end of the guitar's fretboard and the sound hole. Master volume and tone controls feature Top Hat knobs with metal inserts and pointers - just like vintage models - and are located on the guitar's lower bout. And each volume and tone control uses full-size 500K potentiometers.

Epiphone Heavy-Duty Hardware
All hardware, like the Epiphone "Deluxe" machine heads with a pro 18:1 tuning ratio, the Epiphone Heavy Duty 1/4 in. output jack, and pre-installed strap buttons are made from solid nickel and the Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E is set up and tuned at the factory using Epiphone 12-53 nickel strings.

This guitar is beutiful. I've always wanted a guitar with the volume and tone knobs on the bottom of the guitar like this with a pickup on the neck. I finally got it with this guitar. The vintage sunburst has a buetiful look to it. There is one problem though. The "E" on the pickguard seems to be coming off, but when I press it back down it stay's pretty good, but sometimes it comes up. Other than that The pickup look's great setting in the neck, and the volume and tone knobs make it look slick setting on the bottom of the guitar not to say the vintage sunburst makes the guitar pop. All in all I am happy with this guitar, I will use this as my main guitar now. The great thing about acoustic/electrics is you can play them without an electric amp, or you can hook up a cord and plug in to the amp and jam out really loud. All in all I love this guitar and finally got the acoustic/electric I've been dreaming about

Overall I like this guitar. I has surprisingly good tone and sustain.
The one thing I am disappointed in is the sunburst finish.
It is a two tone and not three tone, as depicted in the website ad.
Mine is an open box item, but doesn't look to have been played almost at all.
So the condition is great.
It's just that the color is not what it appears on the Musicians Friend website.
Maybe it has something to do with my guitar having a label on the back of the headstock
that says Made in Indonesia, even though the guitar is described as a product of China.

I bought the natural ej160e first and adjusted the action to my liking and it plays GREAT, SO I BOUGHT THE SUNBURST MODEL !! and it is beautiful it has a more vintage sunburst finish than the John Lennon ej160e it was a orangey burst , these guitars play like a dream .. Have pretty stable tuners and the bone nut and saddles are of Good quality , get one you won't regret it

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Wanted a dependable acoustic/electric for small venue gigs in outdoor environments - this fits the bill. Electric guitar pickup works well through a DI box into PA or through an amp. Lots of low end - if you like lots of high end you might not care for the sound. Guitar is flawless - well made with a very rich finish; set up out of the box was very good - my guitar tech was impressed. The raised E on the pickguard will pop right off, which I think is an improvement - it was the only cheapo thing about the instrument. Plays nice, looks good, good value. They are making some pretty nice guitars off shore these days.

Enjoyed this guitar right out of box. Need to have a set up done but can be used right out of the box. I brought it to work and other guitar players could not put it down. Good looking guitar, sounds great. No problems except that 'E' but that seems to be a common problem.

I like this guitar! It sounds great, looks great and plays really easy. I like the idea of not having to worry about a battery. I will sit down at times for 3 or 4 hours and I never have to think about the battery going dead, right in the middle of playing something really cool! It has a volume and a tone control. That's all I need. I can get the rest of the effects on my amp. I think that's the way it should be. Any other electric guitar will get the effects from the amp not the electronics of the guitar. I'm happy that Epiphone came out with this guitar. It's affordable and I'm very happy with it!!

Guitar looks great and feels great, however, it sounds absolutely horrible. The sound is super flat and muddy acoustically. I have a cheap Yamaha that sounds like a Martin compared to this thing. The electronics are useless as well. The volume must be on 10 to hear the guitar amplified and as far as I can tell the tone knob does nothing. Tried it through a few different amps with the same result. I think the pick up is mounted too low to be useful, but didn't waste time adjusting it. Luckily Musician's Friend is so easy to deal with. I returned it the day after I got it.

After looking a long time for a great sounding, full-bodied acoustic with the electric option, I finally found it. Came out of the box ready to play with just minor tuning and it's fun to own a piece of history as well. Grab the sunburst model and enjoy, you won't regret it!

I loved the guitar but had to send it back due to the B or 2nd string buzzing a little when it was picked by its self. The guitar was beautiful, well made and played and sounded great. The Epiphone emblem (E) had detached itself when I removed it from packaging, but it was easily re-attached.

No , not a Gibson but still a great guitar if you want a J160 and can`t afford $3000 or more . At this price range you are getting a quality guitar . Sounds super both plugged and unplugged . I just got a set of flat wounds(12`s) to try on it . Love that Epi did the natural finish (wish it was a thin nitro) and I`m really pleased with this purchase . Get one !!

I have not used it in performance yet, but look forward to it. It sounds good plugged or unplugged and has a nice feel to it. I rated it four stars because I had to re-glue the e logo to the pick guard (I saw another reviewer had the same issue.) Also, there is not a great degree of variation with the volume control, at least not as much as I would have expected. I like its unique design and the history behind it. I find myself always wanting to pick it up and I have many other great guitars. I'm happy I bought it!

This EJ160e is pretty cool , I like the fact that Epiphone has finally made this Guitar with the correct scale length like the Original Gibson (24 3/4) and in Natural , I bought the natural to go with my John Lennon EJ 160e the Lennon is 25 1/2 scale but still a Great guitar I just got my new one Yesterday , but I've already changed the stock Electric strings for some GHS White Bronze lights 12/53 and oiled the fretboard and installed polished bone Bridge pins and it really sounds Fantastic, plugged in or Acoustic ...get one while you can ...peace

I bought The Gibson J160 about 12 years ago and I'm glad I did. The Epi looks gorgeous! But looks can be deceiving. A buddy of mine bought this guitar and what a disappointment. I tsound like someone stuffed the inside of the guitar with heavy sweat socks. It's just not there. This is not to say that Epiphone in general is a less than reputable company; they're not. I have an Epi Les Paul Standard and I absolutely love it.
