Epiphone

The classic shape and bell-like tone of Gibson's ES series.

First introduced in the late ’50s, the ES series became an instant rock classic, bringing the feel and look of an archtop to a generation of players who had grown up playing solid body guitars like the Les Paul. The ES-335, the first in the ES series, was an instant success. Now Epiphone introduces the ES-335 PRO – an instrument with its roots firmly planted in the classic era when Epiphone’s Kalamazoo factory was producing rock’s most legendary instruments.

Featuring an ES-style body with Alnico Classic PRO humbucker pickups, the new ES-335 PRO semi-hollowbody from Epiphone turns back the clock while breaking new ground in sound and style. Other classic features include a tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece for incredible sustain, Wilkinson vintage-style tuning machines, and a rosewood fretboard adorned with small block inlay. Case sold separately.

I got this guitar in the cherry color and waited for about a month because it was on backorder. so glad I waited. Amazing sound. Took it in for some slight adjustment and just to get it set up, the guys at the shop were impressed. They said they barely had to do anything to it. This guitar is perfect for leading worship music and eliminates the need most of the time to switch to an acoustic guitar because this thing sounds beautiful clean!

I really liked the look of this guitar and did not notice any quality flaws in paint or frets or noisy electronics.

The neck was quite thick, but not necessarily uncomfortable, but I think I prefer a slim taper neck and P 90s for their clarity. I could not get any tones I liked out these pickups, which, by the way, seemed to be low output. Perhaps it is a better "chorder" but I did not find it too useful for single note leads. I used to own a Gibson ES 335, which had its problems, but overall it was a versatile guitar that felt more substantial than this Epiphone. That guitar got burned up in a fire and I still miss it, so maybe that's created unreal expectations in me, but I have also owned my share of budget guitars and this one epitomizes it's price point. It's not exactly cheap--in fact it's decently (if modestly) appointed--but the coil taps seemed gimmicky and the tuners only appear to be like the Gibson "tulips" but they're not. The nut seemed high and not cut quite well and the hardware seemed cheap too. I have never been a fan of the mini top hat knobs, either (Gibson uses these, too, but in my opinion they look too small).

Overall, if you like the look, then this is a project guitar for those who have some nice humbuckers, but then you might as well buy a used Dot and do the upgrades on that. Or, if you can tolerate the hum, get a Casino, which I still really like after all these years.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

I don't like to rate instruments based on their price tag or value, so my thoughts on this guitar are solely based on the the instrument itself-and all around this is a great guitar.

The pickups sound great. Coil splitting functions very well, get great single coil tones. The cleans are fantastic as expected by the style of guitar, but it also handles distortion very well. Crunchy tube breakup sounds amazing and that's where I usually will be tone-wise while holding this instrument, but I have even gotten solid metal/hardcore tones out of this guitar just for fun.

Came with a great set-up from the factory and was actually in tune when I received the box. Packaging was great. I did take it in to my pro tech just for a set up/adjustment and he was blown away that I only payed the amount I did. He actually didn't need to do much. The only problem was the fret's needed a good polishing and the neck actually needed a little more relief for my play-style. I'm not used to such a large guitar and the neck is pretty thick, but honestly those are features that make this beast what it is!

Aesthetically this guitar is beautiful, I got the vintage sunburst and am very pleased with the look. The only gripe I have is the green "vintage style" tuners. Green older looking tuners don't match the shiny brand newness of the rest of the guitar. I'll definitely be putting Grovers on it and also a bone nut. The G string kind of pinches in the nut, but again I will be replacing the nut regardless.

Great guitar all around. I love it. Buy it.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

Solid all around guitar. Excellent for more than just blues and classic rock. With these pickups even Metallica type music sounds awesome. Nice full sound. Plenty of low end growl with good mids. Coil splitting adds to the versatility of the guitar. Can get a nice single coil sound. I have owned it for about 4 months now and have had no mechanical issues. Nothing has broke etc. Came from the factory with a good setup. I have the action low and get no fretbuzz. A solid guitar that can rival Gibsons version as I have both so can speak from experience. Get this guitar!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

I knew what I was getting, a nice cheap 335. The ebony finish is thick and shinny, the neck is a little chunky and that's OK. There is a wowwie in the neck at the 17th fret where I think they over sanded the binding. It doesn't affect the playability. Tone is decent. The set up was terrible! The strings at the nut were like a mountain range, up and down. Had to fill some and file some. Work the bridge and fix the intonation. It was so bad I had to send it out to a professional. Way beyond my limited capabilities, frets needed dressing at the ends and were uneven across the fret board. Tweak the truss rod, added new strings and its way better. I like it! Its fun to play and even with the added price of the set up, still a great deal. Although I had to change the Name from ES-335 Pro to Semi Pro.

With the coil splitting, this guitar gives you genuinely useful single coil tones, unlike many other guitars I tried.

The quality of the woodwork is first class, providing a pride of ownership.

The electronics are much better than the usual Epiphone imports, but the price is just barely above the Dot for a guitar that is so much better in every way.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

To say this is a wonderful guitar is an understatement. There are already many reviews on this guitar, and I agree with them. I bought this guitar as "Like New" Level 1 condition. When I opened the package, what I found was a guitar that looked like it had never been played!
I was nervous about buying a used guitar online, but Musician's Friend relieved that!
I certainly would recommend this guitar to others, and would recommend Musician's Friend!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

Love, love, love, this guitar! However I did have to return two of them. The first had unacceptable flaws in the finish and/or edge binding (it also looked like they had leveled the frets with a brick!). The second guitar looked great, but one of the volume pots was screwed up (knob came out of pot when I pulled it the first time). Musician's Friend was great about cross-shipping replacement guitars! The third guitar was perfect! The guitar plays beautifully, has great tone, and the ebony version is absolutely gorgeous in person! Of course you have to tweak the set-up to your personal likings, I always change out to my preferred strings (Elixir Nanoweb Light/Heavy), polished the frets, oiled the fretboard, and polished the whole thing with carnuba wax, added an El Dorado Vintage Black Leather strap, and this thing can hold a stage next to any axe out there!

Even though I had to return two guitars, Musician's friend made the process very easy and fast! Plus I never paid a penny for any shipping! Nada, zilch, ZERO! If you are hesitant to order a guitar online, don't be, cause Musician's Friend makes it easy, painless and risk free! I will definitely be doing business with them again! Just today I received a call from customer support just to verify that I was happy with the last guitar! That's what customer service should be ... keep up the good work guys!

          Cheers!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition ES-335 PRO Electric Guitar:

I don't usually leave reviews but I was so impressed with this guitar I had to leave this one. I ordered mine in cherry and absolutely love it. The quality of these is really amazing. The binding and detailing is top notch, its way closer to the quality and detailing of USA 335 in my opinion. Its worth more than I paid for it that's for sure. The mother of pearl is really well done too. The pickups are a little hotter than standard PAFs and have that Alnico V sparkly top end. Its like a regular PAF but more clarity. String definition is all there and very well balanced low to high, no muddiness at all, pickups are clear and airy. Guitar came in with low action which I will raise a little to accommodate my slide playing. Intonation came out of the box spot on. Tuners are solid, tuning up is easy, nut does not bind up the strings at all. Once you tune up it stays in tune really well. I would get one of these before they end the limited edition run. After getting this guitar I would not even consider getting a Dot or any other 335 type instrument.
