OVERVIEW

The return of a bold guitar for everything from hard rock to jazz fusion.

The classic Epiphone Genesis was one of Epiphone's most original and modern designs when it was first published in the Epiphone catalog in late 1979. It was intended as a new beginning for Epiphone--a truly original solid body design that could hold its ground with a Les Paul, giving players the added advantage of an eye-catching double cutaway. The proposed Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would bring back this collector's favorite in all its original glory with added features like coil-tapping, Epiphone ProBucker™ pickups and Grover™ tuners along with a beautiful AAA flame maple veneer top and solid mahogany body in four new beautiful color finishes, including Black Cherry, Midnight Ebony, Midnight Sapphire, and Vintage Sunburst.

Original Genesis Ads circa 1979
Early Genesis ads proclaimed "this isn't a guitar for shy people" and "we've created a monster," and you can see why. Along with its bold shape and beautiful finish, the Genesis featured coil-tapping for both pickups via a separate toggle switch. Coil-tapping was a new concept to guitar players and the original Genesis was a bold instrument with a warm sound that could do anything from hard rock to fusion jazz with its incredible sustain from the mahogany body. In many ways, the Genesis was part of Epiphone's longstanding tradition of giving players more for their money at a level of quality and consistency other guitar makers can't maintain. Today, Epiphone is still a leader in giving players a custom shop experience. The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would take it a step further by adding Epiphone's bold ProBucker™ pickups with individual coil-tapping for the rhythm and lead pickups to potentially put the Genesis back to its rightful place among Epiphone's greatest instruments.

AAA Flame Maple Top and Futuristic Features
The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would combine a solid mahogany body with a AAA flame maple veneer, delivering the classic tone and sustain that made the Genesis stand out in a crowd. The double cutaway body features 1-ply cream binding on the top for a beautiful vintage look. The mahogany neck has a 24.75" scale with a 12" radius and features a 1960s SlimTaper™ "D" profile--a player's favorite--along with a glued-in neck joint for lifelong stability. The rosewood fingerboard comes with pearloid trapezoid inlays, 22 medium-jumbo frets and a 1.68" nut along with single ply cream binding along the fingerboard.

Genesis Power: Epiphone ProBucker™ Humbuckers with Coil-Tapping
The original Genesis model featured coil-tapping via a small mini toggle. However, the original Genesis did not allow for coil-tapping each individual pickup. The new Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO zooms into the 21st century with ProBucker™ pickups with coil-tapping on both the rhythm and lead pickups. ProBucker™ pickups feature Alnico II magnets, the same magnets used in sought-after vintage PAF humbuckers. Alnico II magnets provide a rich, warm tone with a sparkling high end and a solid low end. The Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO features a ProBucker-2™ in the neck position and a ProBucker-3™ in the bridge position. The ProBucker-3™ is slightly overwound to provide balance with the neck pickup with an added bit of edge for lead work. ProBuckers™ emulate the sound of original PAF pickups which were hand-wound with a few extra turns of wire.

Both of the Ltd. Ed. Genesis PRO's pickups feature coil-tapping, which is activated by a push/pull volume SpeedKnob control, allowing players an infinite variety of pickups sounds from single-coil bark to full humbucker bite. When winding humbuckers, Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures quiet operation, free from microphonic hum. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is placed on the unit to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax. Epiphone uses only the highest quality parts for its pickups, such as ABS plastic bobbins, 1010 Cold Rolled Steel pole shoes and pole screws, Alnico magnets and the finest magnet wire available.

A Classic Made to Last a Lifetime
The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO features Epiphone's legendary rock-solid gold hardware including a LockTone™ Tune-o-matic fully adjustable bridge and a Stopbar tailpiece. And now, Epiphone's updated, patent pending design auto locks the bridge and tailpiece in place with no tools needed! This also results in improved sustain. The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO uses 1" diameter potentiometers for better "throw," longer life and reliable service. Epiphone's all-metal toggle switches use rugged spring-steel contacts to ensure years of reliable service and performance. Epiphone's proprietary output jack features an improved contact shape and heavy-duty spring steel to increase reliability and gold Grover™ 14:1 machine heads on a classic '60s era Epiphone Sloped Dovewing headstock to ensure tuning stability and long life.

A short review of what "can" be a great guitar. First off the bad. I purchased two of these guitars about a month apart. Both guitars had a common problem. Frets that weren't seated properly. I could have sent them back but everything else about the guitars was amazing.

After having fret work completed on both guitars they play and sound great. I believe the pickups sound better than my Gibson Les Paul. Great sustain, just goes on and on.

The finish is beautiful on these guitars. Much more than what you see in the pictures on this site. My only complaint about the finish would be that one of the guitars looked as though it had been played (pick scratches), even though it was new(?).

I owned an original Genesis back in 1980. And had regretted selling it ever since. Now I have two of the new ones,
red and black. And they're much better than the original.

If you buy one make sure to check all the frets. And there is a special Epiphone Genesis case to be had, if you know where to look.

So in the end I would recommend buying this guitar. You or your luthier will probably have some work to do on it since Epiphone didn't finish the job. But it sure is one sweet guitar.

My Genesis has significant flaws. The biggest problem is a truss rod that does not work. The neck relief came a little too straight, and attempts to turn the truss rod a quarter turn to loosen it produced no effect. It is extremely hard to turn and produced not detectable difference even after one almost full rotation.

There are also 2 high frets, both high only on the bass side. Not terribly high, but enough to cause fret buzz. This I can correct myself later, but it requires specialized tools. Most people will not have access to that.

There was glue residue on the fretboard, and large chunks chipped out of the fretboard with obvious file marks left in it. The wood of the fretboard felt very rough when bending strings. I spent about half an hour with 0000 steel wool smoothing the fretboard wood and it feels much better now.

My last gripe is that the color of mine is orders of magnitude darker than the one pictured on the website. I wouldn't care, but I bought this one to leave sitting out in the living room and purposefully wanted that lighter almost turquoise blue to match the room. I bought blue, and had to take it out into the sunlight to tell that it was not black.

On the plus side, it is a comfortable guitar, and sits on your leg well when sitting down. The neck is not too thick and not too thin. The electronics all work so far, and the pickups sound very good for stock pickups. The coil taps make it much more versatile.

I really wanted to like this guitar, but judging from the number of returns of this particular model, Epiphone should probably have done a mass recall on it. I would like to say that at the lower sale price it was a a steal, but with a defective truss rod, when the neck shifts later, it will be an expensive paperweight.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

My particular unit has none of the issues described in previous reviews. Intonation, tuning, neck, frets and fretboard, weight, sustain, tone, color, finish were all top of the line... The only issue, and while it may seem minor, is substantial in my experience... Balance is off, it has a tendancy to dive when you take your hand off of the neck. This results in greater hand/arm fatigue over time... I'm trying to figure out a way to mitigate this without relocating the strap button. Otherwise, I am extremely happy with this unit, it has lots of squinksquank. Hahahahaha! (That's an industry term) My recommendation above is predicated on my friend knowing his own way around a guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

Out of the box it had some fret buzz and didn't stay in tune all that well. I played it for a couple of months to let it "sett;e in" bit and I was able to discover what it really needed. Then I took it to my guitar guy. He does stars guitars. I won't name drop but I promise you he put his mojo on it and it now has lightning fast action. Stays in tune AND he suggested a Planet Waves guitar strap which stabilizes the guitar very well. It doesn't flip forward anymore while standing and playing. He is used to doing Gibson and top notch guitars and he couldn't believe the quality of this thing. In fact he says he is going to get a couple for himself. I just wish that when I was a kid in the seventies learning to play that they would have had this quality of guitar that i could have been able to afford.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

Feels like a quality instrument. I'm a big fan of the push/pull pick ups and like the flexibility they offer. These sound nice in both positions and really do offer a lot of different tones.

I'm not a high gain player - I'll play overdriven most of the time and roll off with the volume control. I use this Genesis mainly with a couple of older Fender tube amps.

I really like the way the guitar looks - had always wanted a double cutaway and this one does the trick. I am normally a Fender player who likes a chunky Les Paul sized neck - which this does NOT have. Despite this surprise (I ordered without playing one first) I enjoy the feel and find it a nice alternate to my Fenders.

I did take it for a pro setup - and am told that most guitars coming from Asia do not have glued in (only pressed in) frets. After the setup the intonation is quite good and stays in tune well-there were no serious problems with my guitar. Overall I am very happy. If you are considering buying, I'd Suggest looking into a Les Paul case as the Epiphone case, while really nice looking, just doesn't give the kind of protection I normally expect. I'm an Epiphone fan now.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

I recently received my Genesis guitar and it looks great and plays great. Even the set up was good which surprises me. My pet peeve is the edge of the frets being sharp and this was just perfect. I have an 1980 Genesis already but I wanted a new one. After looking at both guitars they look the same (except for the pickups and plug in) but the real difference is the weight. I'm not sure why the new one is noticeably lighter when they are made of the same woods. I think the older one is just a little hotter (maybe because of the wood weight) but not enough to matter. Actually my shoulders and back will appreciate the new one. I played the new one through my Line 6 amp and I was not real pleased but when I put it through my Fender Super Sonic 22 it really kicked in. I think the push pull knobs for the single coil effect are great but the hum buckers is where the real fun is. Can't complain.....if you bought one just enjoy it.

This guitar is spectacular! It has the low end growl of a Les Paul with the super playability of a Firebird or SG. I got the sapphire blue and could not find even the tiniest defect with regards to the finish nor any flaws in the workmanship. The tuners are perfect and the natural tone of the guitar, along with the perfectly balanced pickups is a supreme combination!

I will probably buy another in a different color! You will not regret this purchase!

      P.S.
I had to adjust the neck and set the intonation but that is no biggie and can be expected with most imports.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

Having played guitar for about 50 years, I still had the old notions about Epiphone guitars but I was looking for an axe with burstbucker type pickups. I read all of the reviews on all of the websites and decided to try this guitar due to the great deal at MF. My feelings about Epiphone have done a 180 after putting this guitar through a workout.
The guitar is a beauty. I got the Midnight Sapphire and I even like the gold hardware which I wouldn't consider before. The pups are everything that I was looking for on this model. I have my Strat, a PRS SE model and my trusty 1976 Les Paul Custom but this has become my go to guitar. Before you think I'm crazy, my LP IS my baby, but I'm having an extra-guitaral affair right now!

really like the feel of this guitar. love the neck, but as i said, the action is too high. no problem! the finish is perfect. easy to tune, and STAYS tuned. i'll see what happens when i put my ernie balls on. never thought i'd say this about a guitar, but it's pretty! with the gold hardware, the coil tap, and the overall feel, i can't wait to blast this. the price didn't hurt either

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

I am thoroughly impressed with this instrument, and at the time I bought it for the pricing I bought it at, this was a killer deal! I got the Midnight Sapphire. As others have said, the photos don't show the true beauty of these guitars. The gold hardware just pops on this one. All the pots, switches, jacks, tuners - everything is high quality stuff here. I have played a lot of Epiphone guitars over the years and the product I'm seeing these days it outstanding. Why spend money on the big brother when you can get this close and at higher quality (sometimes). I used to have a Les Paul (Gibby) Studio. This Epiphone Genesis feels, looks, and plays like a better quality instrument. Well done Epiphone/China!

The pickups sound great. They don't seem as punchy as some of the other 'buckers I've heard in Epi guitars but they do sound nice and tight rather than muddy. Then, the coil-tapped tones seem to drop some of the bass tone out and thin the signal. You can get some nice spank and jangle and it sounds great for strummed chord work. I wouldn't say you'll get "Strat" sounds (not as airy and sparkly), nor would I say you'll get "P90" sounds (P90s sound crunchier than these). What you'll get is a thinned out humbucker sound which is exactly what this is. It is still a very usable tone set so I'm glad it's available. I play this through a Vox AC15(C1) 1x12 and also an older Fender Eighty-Five solid state. This guitar sounds great in both.

The body shape threw me off when I first started checking these out but now that I have one in my possession, I love the double-cutaways and the increased fret access. I could never go to these places on an LP, not this easily. Not quite as easy access as an SG (thicker vs thinner neck joint) but still great.
