Epiphone

The return of a bold guitar for everything from hard rock to jazz fusion.

The classic Epiphone Genesis was one of Epiphone's most original and modern designs when it was first published in the Epiphone catalog in late 1979. It was intended as a new beginning for Epiphone--a truly original solid body design that could hold its ground with a Les Paul, giving players the added advantage of an eye-catching double cutaway. The proposed Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would bring back this collector's favorite in all its original glory with added features like coil-tapping, Epiphone ProBucker™ pickups and Grover™ tuners along with a beautiful AAA flame maple veneer top and solid mahogany body in four new beautiful color finishes, including Black Cherry, Midnight Ebony, Midnight Sapphire, and Vintage Sunburst.

Original Genesis Ads circa 1979
Early Genesis ads proclaimed "this isn't a guitar for shy people" and "we've created a monster," and you can see why. Along with its bold shape and beautiful finish, the Genesis featured coil-tapping for both pickups via a separate toggle switch. Coil-tapping was a new concept to guitar players and the original Genesis was a bold instrument with a warm sound that could do anything from hard rock to fusion jazz with its incredible sustain from the mahogany body. In many ways, the Genesis was part of Epiphone's longstanding tradition of giving players more for their money at a level of quality and consistency other guitar makers can't maintain. Today, Epiphone is still a leader in giving players a custom shop experience. The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would take it a step further by adding Epiphone's bold ProBucker™ pickups with individual coil-tapping for the rhythm and lead pickups to potentially put the Genesis back to its rightful place among Epiphone's greatest instruments.

AAA Flame Maple Top and Futuristic Features
The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO would combine a solid mahogany body with a AAA flame maple veneer, delivering the classic tone and sustain that made the Genesis stand out in a crowd. The double cutaway body features 1-ply cream binding on the top for a beautiful vintage look. The mahogany neck has a 24.75" scale with a 12" radius and features a 1960s SlimTaper™ "D" profile--a player's favorite--along with a glued-in neck joint for lifelong stability. The rosewood fingerboard comes with pearloid trapezoid inlays, 22 medium-jumbo frets and a 1.68" nut along with single ply cream binding along the fingerboard.

Genesis Power: Epiphone ProBucker™ Humbuckers with Coil-Tapping
The original Genesis model featured coil-tapping via a small mini toggle. However, the original Genesis did not allow for coil-tapping each individual pickup. The new Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO zooms into the 21st century with ProBucker™ pickups with coil-tapping on both the rhythm and lead pickups. ProBucker™ pickups feature Alnico II magnets, the same magnets used in sought-after vintage PAF humbuckers. Alnico II magnets provide a rich, warm tone with a sparkling high end and a solid low end. The Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO features a ProBucker-2™ in the neck position and a ProBucker-3™ in the bridge position. The ProBucker-3™ is slightly overwound to provide balance with the neck pickup with an added bit of edge for lead work. ProBuckers™ emulate the sound of original PAF pickups which were hand-wound with a few extra turns of wire.

Both of the Ltd. Ed. Genesis PRO's pickups feature coil-tapping, which is activated by a push/pull volume SpeedKnob control, allowing players an infinite variety of pickups sounds from single-coil bark to full humbucker bite. When winding humbuckers, Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures quiet operation, free from microphonic hum. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is placed on the unit to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax. Epiphone uses only the highest quality parts for its pickups, such as ABS plastic bobbins, 1010 Cold Rolled Steel pole shoes and pole screws, Alnico magnets and the finest magnet wire available.

A Classic Made to Last a Lifetime
The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO features Epiphone's legendary rock-solid gold hardware including a LockTone™ Tune-o-matic fully adjustable bridge and a Stopbar tailpiece. And now, Epiphone's updated, patent pending design auto locks the bridge and tailpiece in place with no tools needed! This also results in improved sustain. The Epiphone Ltd. Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO uses 1" diameter potentiometers for better "throw," longer life and reliable service. Epiphone's all-metal toggle switches use rugged spring-steel contacts to ensure years of reliable service and performance. Epiphone's proprietary output jack features an improved contact shape and heavy-duty spring steel to increase reliability and gold Grover™ 14:1 machine heads on a classic '60s era Epiphone Sloped Dovewing headstock to ensure tuning stability and long life.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

Beautiful instrument and mostly useful tones - with bridge p/u. Coil tap sound is dull and lifeless on both p/u. Bridge humbucker p/u is the best and the neck is a bit too dark. Will probably open it up and play w/ capacitor to open up the sound. Also, when trying to blend the two pickups - why I love 2 hum, 4 control guitars - there is only a short span near 10 when I can approximate a mixed sound I like and not really get what I crave - why my Les Paul isn't going back into the case. I'll probably wind up swapping out the pots too. Access to upper frets is is great right up to the 20th fret w/o impedment & with just a little scrunching, up to the 22nd fret!

This guitar will not replace my Gibson LP Custom, but it is fun. Once tweaked & modded, it should have far more useful tones (though I don't know that the coil tapped sounds will ever really work for me). Best of all, aside from the beautiful finish & gold hardware (really compliment each other), I would not be afraid to leave the house w/ this guitar - great bang for the buck! I've only had it a few weeks, but I'm very happy my wife "insisted" I take the chance.

A nice guitar with a beautiful finish and sleek look. It's similar to having a double cut Les Paul. It's comfortable and the split coil capabilities make it a guitar for all styles of playing.

I am a guitar repairman & player. I needed to fret dress & setup guitar to get it to play ultra low, but once that was done it feels, looks & sounds like I have a $2000 new guitar in my hands.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

I hate to admit that I was unfamiliar with the Genesis model prior to seeing MF's closeout price. A little online research clued me in to it's history and I was thoroughly intrigued. I found one in a local shop to try out and loved the tonal possibilities. The one I tried played well enough, but the one I received from MF blew it away. A slight lowering of the bridge and I've got killer action with no dead spots.

I was willing to concede a bit of quality for this price point, but I honestly can't find a bad thing to say about the fit and finish - it's first rate all the way.

I've ended up with a non-traditional looking guitar that provides killer Les Paul-like tone plus more, thanks to the split coil pickups. Probably the best bang for the buck I've ever gotten in a guitar.

My only complaint: Epiphone offers a hardshell case specifically for this model, but MF doesn't carry it. The hunt is on!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

The Epiphone Genesis is very much like a high quality Les Paul Double Cutaway but with it's own look and vibe. It's an Epiphone original design rather than a knockoff of a Gibson. The quality, materials and appearance are first rate. The Pro-Bucker pickups compare very well to Gibson Burstbuckers. This guitar is a fantastic bargain but it's a limited edition, so they will be gone before you know it.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

I bought TWO Epiphones from MF in the last 2 days; this Genesis and a Nighthawk. The Wife now has Post GAS Stress Disorder (PGSD), bless her twichy little heart. Both were used Condition 2; could find NO flaws on either one, even with the high-powered reading glasses on.

I first picked up a guitar less than two years ago at age 60; since I don't have decades to find the "right" guitar for me, I've been on a QUEST, and have bought and sold about 25 guitars in that time. For the benefit of The Wife, I call it "renting" guitars.

I have gravitated towards Epis for Blues (mostly Delta) and finger-picked stuff. The Slim Taper "D" neck just happens to fit me goodm and they feel more natural to me than Fenders. That's just me.

Before the Gennie, EVERY Epi I've owned (three 339s, a Casino, a couple of LPs and Juniors, plus 2 Ibanez Epi clones, etc) has gotten new UNMUDDY pickups after one or two days.
I've used GFS, Seymours, three sets of Zhangbuckers, and several sets of Tonebuckers, all in a quest to get rid of the MUD in the average Epi humbuckers. BTW Toneriders are probably the best bang-for the buck, and Zhangbuckers are simply the BEST, if you're willing to wait. And Wait.

That's NOT HAPPENING with the Genesis; these ProBuckers are SUPERB. Clear as a bell. I think the word folks use is "articulate". Super-responsive to pick (in my case, fingernail) attack. I just got it 3 hours ago and skipped dinner to run it through my Blues Junior with BillM mods and my scratch-built Champ+Reverb. Wow, wow, wow.

Set-up was as close to perfect as any MF guitar I've bought. I only needed to raise the neck pickup about 1 mm; ready to go. The acid test was some BB King riffs that sound excellent on my 339 with ALNICO II Zhangbuckers with the uneven coil tap (he calls it "splat") that cost (the same as the Gennie)for a set, and involved a four-month wait. The Gennie was at least as clear and clean, except the SUSTAINNNN was of course better than the 339. Did I say WOW?

The tuners are 18-to-1 Grovers (not the 14-to-1 on the MF specs). Frets are perfect. Fretboard is gorgeous. Upper frets are RIGHT THERE. One huge unexpected bennie for us amateurs who mostly play sitting-down; the waist of this guitar sits right on your right knee and DOESN'T cut off your circulation like those LP "logs". It may actually be MORE comfortable to play than my 339s, and I LOVE ME some 339s.

FINALLY, the close-out deal of (can't say) is spectacular for this level of quality, but I bought mine USED Cond 2 for (can't say) (right after the price drop), WITH a 15 off "gift certificate" I gave myself (told you I was a good MF customer), so a couple of C-notes. Holy Bejeezus.
I am SERIOUSLY considering buying one at "full" price, just to have. Maybe black; that looks nice. In deference to The Wife, I may have to wait a day or two. You had better BUY YOURS RIGHT NOW, so I don't get it.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

I have four guitars and was not planning on buying another. I had wanted a Les Paul type guitar and recently bought a used Epiphone LP standard in mint condition. It doesn't have the coil tap feature which I like . I received
the Musician's friend catalog and saw the Genesis
on the cover. It would be a good deal at the regular price but I could hardly believe the sale price. I love my LP but I thought I would give this a try and either return it or sell the LP. Guess who is selling a real Nice Epi LP ? This guitar is fantastic in every way. All I had to do was lower the bridge a little. Intonation etc. is spot on. A penny on top of the 12th fret will raise the string on both sides of the neck with no fret buzz anywhere. Sound, finish and workmanship is tops. Thank you Musician's Friend for a great deal.

This is my 60th guitar so I have some knowledge. Needed intonation and bridge raised. After that all was well. I play locally 2-3 times a month and this guitar plays all styles. While you know something must be missing at this price point, you'll be hard pressed to find it. The guitar is great looking and sounds as good as my Gibsons. Changing the pickups may not be necessary. Epiphone makes extremely playable guitars for remarkabke prices which is greatly appreciated.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Genesis Deluxe PRO Electric Guitar:

Wonderful guitar! I love the blue color and finish. Workmanship is top-notch and electronics and pickups are great too. Being my first purchase of a "new" Epiphone built in China, I was a little wary but all the reviews I could find were extremely positive so I got one and I couldn't be happier. I tried many other guitars in the same price range (mostly built in Korea which I think are good quality) and I'd put this up against the best Korean builds out there. Just stunning and I couldn' find the slightest production flaw ANYWHERE! The most pleasant surprises were the excellent Grover tuners and the perfectly set and AAA+ quality pearl trap inlays- the kind of inlays you'd expect to find only on WAY more expensive guitars. Everything about the guitar is perfect for me- great retro-ish looks, solid build quality, good weight (~8 lbs- not too heavy or too light), good balance (no neck dive) and feels much like a Les Paul to play- same basic neck and fret board dimensions as my '95 Epi LP that I've had for nearly 16 years and am so used to. After I made some basic setup adjustments, it played smootly and fast- just like my Epi LP that has had a pro tech setup. Probuckers sound strong and FAT on dual-coil and kind of Stratocaster-like on singles. I prefer the dual-coil setting but I prefer humbuckers in general anyway. Nice to have the extra tone versatility though. It's flat out an awesome guitar and value for the money. I also like that it is an Epiphone remake of an Epiphone and it isn't just another comprimised copy of some high-end guitar that you can't afford. I feel it adds to its "credibilty" and mojo because you don't have to feel like you've "settled" for something less. If anything, from what I've been reading, it is a big IMPROVEMENT over the original Genesis- mainly in that it is a full 2 to 3 lbs lighter! These are limited production guitars and I'm glad I got mine while I could! Also there is a special case that you can get for it but it fits perfectly in my standard Epi LP case.
