    Epiphone

The 3-pickup crown of all semi-hollowbodies.

The Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale is modeled after one of Epiphone’s most enduring classics, the Riviera. Introduced in the early 60’s, the Epiphone Riviera’s semi-hollow design has been a favorite of players from all genres and generations including blues great Otis Rush, Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground, and The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, who all found the Riviera’s legendary ES-body shape could produce great tones with any pickup variation. Over the years, the Riviera has been seen with humbuckers, mini-humbuckers, and P90’s. But now the Custom P93 Royale has the rare distinction of giving players a new sound and a new, distinctive look.

The Riviera Custom P93 Royale uses not two but three Epiphone Dogear Classic pickups for a punch that leaves all other three single coil pickup guitars in the dust. And when matched with the bell-like tones of the ES-style body plus a stunning Black Pearl finish and a Bigsby B70 tremolo, the P93 Royale becomes one of our era’s great instruments and perhaps the most striking of the Royale family.

    Semi-hollow Design, Solid Craftsmanship
The Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale is constructed of premium laminated maple with a mahogany center block and a hand-fitted, glued-in mahogany 24.75” scale neck with a SlimTaper™ “C” profile and 22 medium jumbo frets with a 1.68” nut for great string spacing and intonation. Other details include a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid Parallelogram Inlays.

    Ground Breaking Electronics
The Riviera Custom P93’s fabulous semi-hollowbody sound is voiced by three Epiphone Dogear classic P90 pickups with Alnico™ V magnets. Controls include 3 Volumes and 1 Master Tone. The all-metal toggle works as it would with a 2-pickup guitar with the rhythm position activating the neck pickup and the lead toggle position activating the bridge pickup. The middle pickup can be used in any position by adjusting its volume control.

Quality electronic parts include full-size, 1” 500K Ohm potentiometers, Epiphone's all-metal pickup selector switch, ‘60s era Epiphone logo on the headstock, and a heavy-duty output jack.

    Epiphone Hardware
The Riviera Custom P93 Royale’s black pearl finish and binding are complimented by a one-of-a-kind Epiphone pickguard. The Riviera Custom’s hardware includes premium 14:1 ratio Wilkinson® machine heads which provide superior tuning stability and accuracy. Also included as standard equipment on the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is Epiphone’s exclusive LockTone™ locking Tune-o-matic bridge plus a legendary Bigsby B70 tremolo.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

This guitar is the way to go! I had purchased a fender squier jazzmaster a few years back and wanted something that could meet my wallet, get the crowds attention, and play like a charm. I got this guitar in my hands and i knew it was going to be the one. It's a more bluesy kind of guitar, but i use it for everything. I recommend to ANYONE. Get it, Get it intonated, get the strings you like, and THIS will be your main gig right here.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

So, I have a black, wine red and gold one. Just need the white one to complete the set. This black guitar sounds great, looks great. These P93 Riviera guitars have a wide, narrow (thin) neck that is very comfortable (for me). Again, it's a fine instrument and with the 3 P90 pickups it sounds great. I did adjust the pickup and pole piece heights (quite easy), set the intonation and string height, adjust the truss rod. Now this thing roars. One comment, the gloss black finish shows dust and finger prints more than other colors and finishes. Get a guitar wiping cloth and some polish. This guitar will feedback, in a good way. I set one up with a bit higher action for slide guitar (open D, E, G...whatever) works just fine.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

I just got this guitar yesterday. I love the looks, although I could do with a little less bling on the bindings. This guitar plays nicely, although out of the box, I could not get a great clean sound. After researching the internet I found some good setting for the pole pieces on the P90s, and now it sounds great. Did not take but just a few minutes to go from OK to great sound! It does have that 60 cycle hum, but that it to be expected with single coil pickups.
All in all, I am satisfied that this is very good guitar at a great price!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

I have seen quite a few of these in different colors where the strings have been far too close to the pickups, which resulted in muffled tones. Actually quite awful sounding in some cases. I owned one briefly a few years ago in Wine Red, but had to return it. Subsequently, I've picked up everyone I've seen since and have seen the same issue to varying degrees.

I saw this one yesterday in the Black Royale for the first time and the difference was astounding. Even more impressive was the tone. I bought it on the spot.

The tone is bright and bold at the same time, but none of the mud or muffled tone that the P93's have had so many write about. Every tone from the dimed bridge to the dimed neck is usable and musical as is everything in between. Perhaps an exception would be when the tone knob off or no higher than 3 with the neck pick-up.

This guitar should not be as dark as my '05 Epi LP Custom. My previous one was much darker. This one is not. The difference between the two is as one would expect. A little brighter than, and not as thick as the LP. Neither one should sound muffled until turning the tone knob off. At least not until cutting through a mix.

The binding and paint job is fine. No runs or odd spots. It was a wall-job, so some clean up was required to get other folks' smudges off. And new strings, of course.

I don't like the tuners, but not due to functionality. I just have never been too fond of this style. They work fine, so perhaps I'll stick with them.

The Black Royale color/accent scheme works well, but I would have preferred the Wine Red. It is growing on me pretty quickly, though.

The Bigsby is a bit stiff compared to others I've had or tried. Usable, but a little harder to use as a gentle touch does little to move it.

The fret edges are great. No shred job here.

Playability is just fine. My action is great with no buzzing. The neck is about 9 out of 10 for straightness. The body is big, but not too thick to have to reach around like an acoustic or a hollow-body like my Electromatic.

I thought it would be a bit big and bulky to play, but playing it right after playing my ES-339 is barely noticeable size-wise, if it was noticeable at all.

In the end, I give a rating of a 4 just because one should not have to test so many to find a 5, or at least to be above a 2. Inspect thoroughly when you get it and expect a 5. It's possible. Mine is.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

A Nice Ax, for the cost! I have the Wine Red with Gold Hardware. A Beautiful Ax! I didn't use to be a P-90 fan, I have a Real vintage '66 [2 P-90s] Casino! I preferred my '71 335, on the road. However with the 3rd P-90, you have Options! The 3 volume controls when all the way up, gives ya , a HB effect in the Bridge and Neck positions.[like a Strat] I assume that the Middle is reverse wound. Gives a really full sound! With the middle P/U Vol.off, ya get the regular 2 P-90 sound. I replaced the tuning Machines, with Tone-Pros gold 'tulip knob' "Drop- Ins", Exacly the Same hole pattern. gave me the stability of a cast base, W/O the drilling! Also, gave me the Vintage Look of the [Kluson/Gibson Delux Tuners] Used on tons of Old Gibsons/Epis ! I replaced the Tune-A-Matic with a Wilkerson Roller Tun-A-Matic Bridge. I have not experienced any tuning problems, any more than with any other Bigsby Guitar, I have about 10 axes with Bigsbys. sometimes the P/U switch need to be worked , up an' down, if it sits a while without being played- [couple of weeks] but I have 32 guitars, so---Basically this Ax is like a 335 with 3 P-90s. I also machined the Bigsby Bar STOP a little to allow me to swing the bar to a Position more over the strings, to allow for [Fake!] Pedal Steel licks, using a Volume Pedal, finger pix, an' Bigsby! FUN!!. Any Ax needs to be Adjusted to it's player's Preferences!! I REALLY like Mine!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale Electric Guitar:

Bought this guitar a few months ago from Musicians Friend. Very nice looking & great quality finish & neck. Would NOT stay in tune,Bigsby creaked & sticky. Bridge pickup mount way too high. Bridge was horrible and wobbled. I'm an experienced bassist & bought this for personal use,so decided to keep it and fix it's ills. Lowered the bridge pickup by removing the fragile wood shim & with 180 grit sandpaper carefully lowered it by half the thickness. Took apart the Bigsby & oiled it, tightened the handle & put a plastic shim under the spring to stop creaking. Filed trem handle stop to allow handle to raise to a comfortable level for me,also bent it down closer to the strings. Replaced the bridge with a roller bridge (China!)& had to file & oil the roller axel pins sharp, jagged edges to make it work! Better tuning but still not perfect. Finally removed the strings from under the front bar on the Bigsby and ran them straight off the trem bar to the roller bridge. HOORAY,tuning is now very stable! Had a friend set the neck, string heigth & intonation it is a dream to play, great sounding. HINT:use good quality gun oil that doesn't gum up! If your not comfortable with doing the modifications described, this guitar is not for you...but the results are worth it. Let our lead guitar player in our gospel band try it & he loved it! Glad I didn't return it & decided to cure its ills! Now it has great playability with a set of Ernie Ball Classic 10's strings as well as its nice looks. I give it only an average rating because of the problems. Epiphone should be embarrassed to put out such a nice looking guitar with so many problems. P.S.,don't worry about the Epiphone E on the pickguard, it falls off all by itself...ha!
