OVERVIEW

A no-frills version of the new generation archtop.

When the Epiphone Wildkat premiered in the early '90s, it introduced a new generation to historic Epiphone archtop style, which the House of Stathopoulo has been perfecting for nearly a century. Now the Ltd. Ed. Wildkat Studio nouveau classic is back with new colors and a streamlined look.

The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Wildkat Studio features the timeless Wildkat profile made from mahogany with a flame maple top and classic Epiphone styled f-holes. The glued-in hard maple neck is hand-set and has a fast and comfortable 1960s SlimTaper D-profile with a 24.75 scale and a 12 radius.

The neck has a beautiful rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets. The truss rod cover (2-layer black and white) is matched to a classic '60s era œE logo for Epiphone. The Sloped Dovewing headstock, also an iconic style from the early '60s, has a vintage Epiphone metal badge. The body has simple but elegant single-layer Ivory colored binding as does the top, fingerboard and f-holes.

The Ltd. Ed. Wildkat Studio is powered by Epiphone designed Dogear Classic P-90 pickups, a favorite of Epi fans for decades. P-90 pickups are the world's best single coil pickups made from Alnico magnets with precise articulation for leads and rock n' roll growl for power chords and rhythm. Each pickup is activated via an Epiphone 3-way toggle switch for rhythm, lead, and a standard middle position for both pickups. Controls include a handy Master Volume, Master Tone, and individual volume controls for each pickup with Black Top Hat knobs with metal inserts.

Epiphone hardware is just as famous as its electronics and the Ltd. Ed. Wildkat Studio comes with a time-tested Epiphone LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Epiphone Stopbar tailpiece combined with Epiphone Premium Die-Cast machine heads. Epiphone Die-Cast machine heads feature a pro-level 14:1 tuning ratio for precise intonation and rock solid tuning. Each Ltd. Ed. Wildkat Studio is set up at the Epiphone factory with the world's finest strings from D'Addario in a 10-46 (light) gauge.

I had debated about buying a hollow body electric guitar for some time. I finally decided on this Epiphone Wildkat. It was well set up right out of the box. It feels very solid and is lighter than my solid body electric. I decided not get the bigsby tremolo as I saved some money and can always purchase one later. I really love this guitar. The finish is so beautiful as I got the wine red. It did come with a slight blemish near the tone control. The staff at Musician's friend has been very helpful and gave me a credit for the blemish. I really like the wide fret board. And now its on sale for a very reasonable price. You won't be disappointed.

This is a fun, lighthearted, kick-butt guitar - potentially! If you grew up on Gibsons in the 50's and 60's you will feel at home on this somewhat fat neck. Don't understand the bad rap on the pickups - I've owned an original 67 Epi Casino, original 59 LP Special and a 78 LP Pro that I bought new, and these sound right! Great blues/jazz voice, plenty of cut for classic rock and ample twang for country. Nice roll off and taper on the controls and master volume is great feature! Very comfortable, well balanced versatile guitar that's fun to gig with. BUT, the quality control just, well, SUCKS! The nut on this one was apparently set up for slide, the frets were all steak-knife-sharp on the ends and frets were so uneven that you got the same note on three consecutive frets! One expects to do some tweaking and set up, but not finish the factory's work for them! Especially with all the hype about Epiphone quality control and USA set up, etc. - hogwash! Dirt and debris in the clear coat in the f-hole binding, ample coarse sanding scratches on the body sides and neck heel - never seen any of that on a Fender Squire for the same money!

Amazing guitar. Great looking and very fun to play. I'm blown away by the tones and playability. I like it a lot more than my new Gibson Les Paul 2016 Studio T, and it costs 63% less. At this price, I'll probably buy a 2nd one!

Bought as a level 2 Blem from MF. Guitar came in great shape. Fit and finish of guitar excellent. Wine red color is sharp. Neck profile is nice- not too thick or thin..... P90's do their job. Much better for blues and classic rock. Sounds a little "thin" when not over driven.

Comments about Limited Edition Wildkat Studio Electric Guitar:

Not bad for an inexpensive guitar. I've had many guitars over the past 40+ years, so I'm not a beginner. I have always wanted a hollow/semi-hollow guitar, you know, for the clean stuff. And this is ok for the price. You can't plug into a lot of gain, but that's not what it's for. The gold top has a nice finish, and the sound is good. The neck feels a little cheap, but hey, it's a cheap guitar. I was torn between this, and the Gretch that was the same price, but it wasn't in stock, so I got this one. Glad I did. If you're looking for a real nice hollow body, save your money: as the old adage goes: you get what you pay for. But if you just need something for noodling, and to fill that gap in you collection, this is a very good alternative to the more expensive models.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Wildkat Studio Electric Guitar:

I really wanted this guitar to be good and I wasn't disappointed. I saw one of my favorite blues musicians playing the blue Wildkat with tremolo and it sounded great and looked so cool (I got the wine red color without the tremelo). I've got a couple American Fenders and a Gibson Les Paul but have never had a hollow body electric with P-90 pickups. So, at the recent sale price from Musician's Friend, I figured I couldn't lose trying this Epiphone. I was shocked at the craftsmanship and finish when I opened the box. I did tweak the intonation a little but overall the setup was very good. I also changed the strings, since I had no idea how long since the guitar had been strung and I wanted to give this guitar every chance for a great first impression. I plugged it in to a Fender Blues Jr. and was very pleased with the range of tones from clean to snarly with the treble pickup. Having a Les Paul, I was particularly happy with the Wildkat master volume knob to keep everything balanced when changing the volume of the rhythm and treble pickups. I was a little worried that being a hollow body it might cause feedback at the amp but that was not a problem, even when playing close to the amp at high volume. The size and weight are perfect. If you are a performing musician, you will really appreciate the light weight of this guitar. I really like the styling of this guitar, especially the classic headstock and Epiphone badge. I just never liked the common Epiphone headstock shape that seemed to wide and extended at the tip. I will have a lot of fun with this guitar. If you want a great hollow body guitar with P-90 pickups, you won't be disappointed with the Wildkat.

A friend of mine bought one of theses and loves it. So I decided to buy one. I got the Gold finish and could not be happier. The set up out of the box was pretty good, the strings being a bit low for my tastes but nice. It has a nice round sound with no fret buzz at all. I played it through different amps and it comes alive through my Marshall. It also sounds really good with the Boss GT-8. This one is a keeper. Don't let the low price fool you, this is a great guitar. Way to go Epi.
