OVERVIEW

Premium all-solid woods including a Sitka spruce top and rosewood body.

Expert luthiery to rival Epiphone's classic 1930s guitars is evident in the Masterbilt AJ-500ME's precision top, back, and fretboard binding. A light guitar with great volume, projection, and natural warmth enhanced by solid mahogany back and sides.

The eSonic2 preamp

The eSonic2 preamp with built-in tuner features studio quality fidelity, premiere dynamics, and greatly increased harmonic content, resulting in uncompromising acoustic guitar realism. The preamp is equipped with a very accurate chromatic tuner. When the tuner button is activated, the tuner, there will be no output signal from the guitar. The tuner button can also be used as a mute function. By activating the tuner, you can avoid the loud pops when plugging in.

NanoFlex pickup
The term "Nanoflex" refers to its ultra thin (nano-like) profile and its flexibility that allows it to conform to any surface shape. This assures complete guitar-to-pickup-to-saddle contact. Unlike other under-saddle pickups, the Nanoflex design utilizes 7 highly-sensitive and ultra-responsive layers of sensor material to not only sense the vibrations of the strings but the vibrations of the guitar body as well. The Nanoflex is the first pickup to incorporate active amplification directly at the pickup. As a result, the signal does not pass through even a single millimeter of the wire and therefore, the signal quality is uncompromised.

Nanomag Pickup
Ordinary magnetic pickups have been used successfully to amplify electric guitars for years but when used to amplify acoustic guitars, they fail to deliver desirable acoustic response. That's because magnetic pickups have a very narrow bandwidth with an over-emphasis on mid-range frequencies. The Nanomag, referring to its small size and its composition, is a different kind of magnetic pickup that combines 3 Samarium—Cobalt magnets with on-board, active electronics to produce a low-impedance pickup with absolute linear response and an uncharacteristically wide frequency range.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

After three years of playing my Taylor, I decided that I wanted a "beater" guitar, but one that was a good-sounding strummer and all wood. High-quality, all wood, AND inexpensive is VERY difficult to achieve in the guitar market, but Epiphone seems to have pulled it off with these guitars. I had to search a while to find one with a straight neck, but once I did, I grabbed it. With only a slight truss-rod adjustment, the action is perfect.Sound-wise, the guitar is very good. Not quite as rich or engaging as my Taylor, but EXTREMELY good for the price point. No buzzes or weirdness from the fretboard, and a very even projection across the strings. Intonation is spot on. The electronics are also very good, and I'm impressed by how you can mix the two types of pickups. The only reason I gave it a four for Quality is because there is a very slight irregularity in the binding on the bottom of the lower bout, but that has no effect on my enjoyment of this guitar. My complaints are few. First, slope-shouldered dreads don't sit as happily on your leg as standard, narrow-waisted dreads, so I've had to get used to playing with a strap to keep it stable. I knew this going in, and I LOVE the slope vibe, so no real worries there. It may also be *slightly* overbuilt, but still with none of the really boxy sound coming out of lesser Epis or even some Gibsons. Lastly, you'll want to swap out the cheap plastic bridge pins. I threw in some Tusq traditionals and they work and sound great. So, I basically get 75% of the workmanship and sound of my Taylor for about 25% of the price. I couldn't be happier about what I got for my money with this guitar.

GREAT SOUND AND GREAT PRICE

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've played guitar since I was fourteen years old. I am now sixty and have owned many guitars over the years. I won't bore you with a list of them all, but suffice it to say, I've had some quality instruments. I've had the Masterbilt AJ-500 ME for a month or so and love it. None of them ever bowled me over when I first picked them up as did this Epiphone! The tonal quality exceptional. I beive this guitar is as good, or better than any other I have owned. For the price, it is unsurpassed.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a follow up to my first review at the top of this list. After a few months of use, I began to notice the guitar drying out causing the strings to fret out on a hump in the neck. I have sent it back to Gibson and they will replace it, but they say it won't ship for another month. So, while this guitar looks and sounds great, be aware that the neck may not stay straight, especially if you live in a dry climate like California. I guess that it is true that "you get what you pay for." This may be a bargain guitar if you get a good one, but be prepared to deal with warranty claims.

Gave it a try in the store and I can't wait to get it. It's truly well made and compares to the top brands. You can feel the body resonate more than you would on most guitars in the price range. It's also very attractively made. Quit reading?buy it now!

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Walked into the acoustic room of my local guitar shop looking to upgrade from my laminate top epi ej-200. played a gibson j-45, gibson j-200, various taylors, martins, and even a bourgeois. I had the funds to cover any of them (except the bourgeois!), but I walked out with this baby. I can't do the sound justice in words other than telling you it really was head and shoulders above all those others previously listed. I know that might be guitar blasphemy, but it's 2008 and this guitar is a surefire sign that china is just starting to catch up with the luthiers of the USA. It is a bitingly clear and loud tone, crisp with a boomy low end. Action is flawless and I regularly play it well beyond the 12th fret in blues runs. It really has to be played to be believed, but I promise you will be a believer. only complaint is that I have noticed it is VERY sensitive to humidity, so you might want to go a different direction if you live in florida or louisiana.

Best Deal On The Market

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just received the AJ-500ME(vintage sunburst) and am truly blown away by this guitar. I was definitely careful to inspect every detail of the guitar out of the box (frets, neck, bridge, bracing etc.) expecting the worse and ready to ship back if necessary. It was perfect, not even a speck of dust. I was prepared to do some adjustments on the action and truss rod as normal wih all new guitars........but didn't have to. The action was near perfect. Low enough to move around with ease, do some bends yet it has just enough tension to achieve some great volume. The tone is ideal for any playing style, it nice and tight when strumming, never muddy, yet it rings out when finerpicking (especially if you have your nails grown and shaped). I had ordered this about a month or so ago and it was on backorder, so in the meantime I went to my local music store and played everything. Gibsons, Taylors, Martin, Breedlove, Blueridge, Takamine....everything. The only guitar that really grabbed me was the Taylor 210, and I almost bought it but decided to wait and see. I'm glad I did. The Taylor had that signature high end punch that just grabs your ear, but didn't offer a lot of low end. The Martin had those nice boomy lows but the highs paled in comparison to the Taylor. This Epiphone is the best of both worlds. I have to tell you, I played the rosewood version of this and it didn't sound nearly as good. For perfect tonal balance the mahogany is the way to go. Epiphone has really stepped it up with these guitars. I can't comment on the electronics yet, I haven't had an opportunity to plug it in. The Shadow Esonic II system that it's equipped with is a dual pickup system with two 1/4" jacks capable of running stereo. You can use the pickups individually or blend them which should give you good control over the sound. The only reason I didn't give it a perfect 5 in features is that it didn't even come with a gig bag. As far as I can tell that's the ONLY place they cut corners on this one. Congrats Epiphone.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just recieved my epiphone AJ500ME in the mail after three weeks of waiting. And I gotta say it was well worth the wait. Please do not let the price describe the guitar to you. THIS IS A STEAL. the aj500me has a deep warm sound as well as a bright tone to accompany it. It has two pick ups: one electronic one on the neck (nanomag), and a microphone pickup in the back of the inside of the body (nanoflex). You can easily switch between the two to change the sound with its newer esonic2 pickup equalizer. It also has two places to plug in. Never saw on a guitar until I got this one in the mail. To further compliment its sound it has a solid spruce top! This means that its tone will IMPROVE over time. In short, if you purchase the aj500me, you are getting a high end sound for a mid range price. recording

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I recieved my aj500mens about one week ago and I was very surprised when I opened the box. It was better than I expected. I had played the vintage sunburst version in local guitar stores but never seen the natural satin version. It is a very good looking guitar. Even though it says it comes with the Baggs element pickup mine came withe the new Esonic2 . I'm still very satisfied so far. The sound is great( typical gibson-epiphone sound. Very solid and even from the high's to the lows. The action was perfect for me right out of the box. I changed strings to my favorite and have done nothing else but play. I use the electronics at church and am very staisfied. This guitar sounds great alone or plugged in. I am totally sold on the masterbuilt series. Solid top and body with bone saddle and nut, find that anywhere else especially at this price. I've played many guitars looking for the right one and this guitar sounds and plays as good as others costing much much more. Unbelievable deal. Buy it even if you just think you might like it. I don't think you will regret it!!

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Electronics not as advertised. eSonic Shadow 2 instead of Baggs Element. I don't know the difference, but it was a surprise. Vendor says that they publish the details provided by manufacturer and weren't aware of the change. Came with dead batteries; no big deal but irritating. Otherwise, great tone and projection but a little buzz on the low E string.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

If you're considering buying this particular guitar then you've likely already done lots of research and found this gem. Rest your concerns, buy with assurance. Simply amazing construction/feel/sound/look. it comes with 2 instrument cable plugs (I've never seen this before getting this guitar) and 2 pickups, which is a pleasant rarity for acoustic-electrics. If you can find a store that has these in stock then buy it.

Great Deal for a Great Sound

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I researched these guitars before finding one used for 465, I bought it as soon as I saw the price and have been completely satisfied. The sound of this guitar is INCOMPARABLE for the price, it doesn't put me to shame, even around my Uncle's D-45 Martin. The AJ-500ME has great tone coming from solid wood, which means it will only improve with age. Its style is a nod to the old 1930s Epi guitars, mainly the offset notch headstock, old style Epiphone and stickpin inlays on the headstock, and the open back Grover tuners. The body and neck bindings accent the sunburst finish on my guitar very well. The electronics include a tuner, they sound great, and there are two outputs on the guitar, one for the single coil pickup, and one for the undersaddle pickup which also puts out both pickups in stereo. I play this guitar through a Fishman Loudbox Perfomer, and it sounds killer; basically a precise reproduction, just louder. One concern with the pickups is that the undersaddle nanoflex pickup tends to feed back really badly. I considered a soundhole cover, but that isn't a good option because of the single coil nanomag at the base of the neck which protrudes into the soundhole. The appointments are not quite as nice as the AJ-500R and RE models, which have gold tuners and headstock binding, but this mahogany guitar is meant to be a workhorse, not a flashy honky-tonker. I have had no problems with the action, the and the fretboard inlays are perfect. The stock bridge pins are not great, but I replaced them with a set of bone pins from stewmac, and they work great. There is a slight outward bow at the base of the bridge, but no other body flaws, the neck is straight, and the action is perfect. This guitar is a great buy, and if you throw in 50 bucks for a professional setup it won't let you down.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Awesome guitar!!! Everything from the warm sound to the quality craftsmanship. Squier compared to fender is complete crap, but put an epiphone next to a gibson and they're almost on par with each other. The only complaint I have is the sides don't dip in enough so the guitar is a little bit difficult to keep in my lap, but that's not enough to discourage me playing for hours. Awesome guitar and an absolute steal for the price.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought the AJ500ME used and it came with the EAN preamp system. I was skeptical of a guitar in this price range but couldn't resist the price. I have played and owned many of the high end Martin, Taylor, Larivee, Gibson and many other fine guitars. This EPI will hold its own with the best of them. Acoustically it sounds unbelievable at twice the price. I can't even play my Takamine G series anymore because it sounds like a toy next to this guitar. If your looking for high end tone at a working mans price then buy it. You won't be dissappointed.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Recommended the AJ500ME to a student. Great tone. Only minor setup needed on original saddle, now plays great. So I bought myself a AJ500RE for more money. It needed nut slot work, fret leveling, and new saddle. Both had problems with the bridge pins going in too deep to grab to remove.

Comments about Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500ME Advanced Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This baby is ptretty good. The tone is bright and gorgeous acoustically: a very, very fine instrument. Through a PA it's even better. The only thing to beware of is that this is a satin finish. The vintage sunburst is gorgeous, but the satin finish looks dull compared to what you may be used to. I don't care because I love the darkness of the paint job, the beauty of the retro design, the tone, the playability right out of the box (professionally set up in the U.S. before it is shipped), and the fabulous electronics. I can't say enough about this guitar. Buy one. You won't be sorry.
