An authentic SG only smaller “ a great beginner's axe!
The Epiphone SG-Express electric guitar captures the look, sound and feel of the famous SG, but in a slightly smaller package that's perfect for travel use, younger players or those more comfortable playing a small electric guitar. The neck has the same basic dimensions as a full-size guitar but the scale length is only 22" as compared to 24-3/4" on a full-size SG. The result is an extremely comfortable Epiphone guitar that maintains good string tension when tuned to standard E.
Great Design Features!
While the SG-Express is an authentic SG, Epiphone has incorporated in some unique design features to ensure that the guitar performs well. First, while the body is still Mahogany the neck on the Express is Hard Maple as opposed to the traditional Mahogany neck. This gives the Epiphone guitar a little more high-end bite or brighter tone which effectively offsets the slightly looser string tension due to the shorter scale length. Additionally, the combination of the fully-adjustable fixed bridge with a string-through body design fits well on the smaller size body while adding sustain and making string changes a breeze. Finally, the neck is bolted in place securely using 4 recessed bolts set into a tapered heel making upper fret access easier and very comfortable.
With the slightly looser string tension, it's even more important to have great tuners. Epiphone designed the SG Express guitar with premium, 14:1 ratio die-cast tuners to give you excellent tuning accuracy and stability. As a bonus, a custom Express-sized padded gig bag is included with every guitar making it the perfect travel companion.
Peace of Mind!
As with all Epiphones, the SG Express includes Epiphone's Limited Lifetime Warranty and is backed by their famous 24/7/365 Customer Service.

My Grandson has always been fascinated with my guitars, tube amps, & gizmos & whiz-bangs(stompboxes & multi-effects pedals)since he was a toddler. And he has been naggin' for me to teach him to play. I finally agreed to start giving him lessons, when he turned nine. But, Knowing he was too small to man-handle a full size guitar. I started looking for a 3/4 size guitar for him. And I have two Gibson SG's in my guitar collection that are my G-son's favorites. So, the Epi SG Express was a no brainer. I put together a SG Express "beginner pack" that included a Bugera V5 5 watt tube combo amp and all the needed gear(strap, picks, tuner, cable, headphones & etc.), so he could do his "homework" in his bedroom. His first lesson was a "how to" properly change strings, tune, & set up a electric guitar. Well, it has been several months since he got his Epi SG Express, and I have been giving him lessons several times a week. And I can tell, how much he loves his SG Express, cuz he always shows up for his lessons with a clean & well cared for & in tuned guitar. And his ever growing playing skills, attest to his at home practice time. So in closing, I can say without reservation that the Epi SG Express quality, features,&playabilty will serve my grandson well into his teen years. When he is ready for a full size guitar, and I will give him one my Gibson SG's.
Available in two body styles and gloss & "worn" black finish, Epiphone created a winner with the Express lines. The fingerboard is a couple inches shorter, making this a great guitar for travelers, smaller people and children.
But other than size, there's nothing childlike about this guitar. It stays in tune and has excellent sound and finish. My two boys (8 and 11) are very pleased with these instruments - as am I. I purchased the second - the other style - after about six months of experience with the first.
A teacher had commented that she'd been "waiting her whole life" for a scaled version of a guitar to work - and this onesure does!
I'd advise against the temptation to get a full sized for a child. Getting started is tough enough as it is - a properly sized instrument makes all the difference in joy vs. tourture.
When they do grow a bit, I have the feeling my boys will continue to use and enjoy these guitars - and if not - we'll take comfort in the fact that they really seem to hold their value based on a few examples I have seen available second hand.
The plastic volume / tone knobs are the only things that look cheaper than they should. They are fitted to standard sized knobs through, so upgrades are possible.
I got this little guy to play on my commute to work, and I didn't expect much. Was I ever surprised! This little axe ROCKS! It's got Gibson Humbuckers on it, and the tuners stay in tune well. I love it!
First off-Fit and finish are excellent,The black color is nice looking and the set-up on this was actually good too.It intonated well and seems to hold good tune with the stock strings.Comes with a little gigbag to keep the dust off it.Played it through my Vox vt30 and it does sound decent for what you get,not Gibson quality,But still decent.I bought this for my 7 year old son to learn on.He loves it too.I think it sounds better clean through the amp then distorted. This little thing looks like my Real Gibson SG has a son.I enjoy playing this guitar myself. You can beleive what the other reviewers wrote about this. For the money this costs,It's worth every penny.I am in no way affiliated with MF but they are my FIRST choice in buying a guitar from for BEST PRICE and SERVICE.There Customer Service is BEST and if your not happy,THEY are not happy. They take it right back and dont give you any grief for it.Best price out there and free shipping,This company takes care of there customers and it shows.Keep up the GREAT work and I'll keep coming back for more guitars and accesories.God Bless you all!!!!!!!!
8 only because I can't fit my wrist/hand in to access the upper frets.
Did a lot of internet research and for the size (22" scale ) this appears to be the best made instrument. So far its living up to the reviews.
Lightweight - easy on the little one's neck. Sounds - pretty nice Strange that the higher fret access is limited to tiny wrists - I have about an 8" diameter wrist and it won't fit where the lower body horn is curving around. So even though its playability is supposed to be played by young and mature - ...Ephiphone should give some consideration to expanding the diameter of the curve around. Very clean on "clean setting"
Sounded almost Henricks like with my 15 W , Line 6 with minor amount of gain at amp and guitar and phasor. Fun instrument.
haven't but had it a month so can't tell yet
its a real instrument - appears to be well made
I love mini guitars. Have owned valuable guitars in my lifetime. Dollar for dollar this baby is worth every cent! It is well made, innovatative design. I would rather play this little baby anyday over my Gibson 61 SG, Les Paul, Fenders, Godin, Taylors, Martins. That is what I am comparing it to. Dollar for dollar you will not be disappointed or have any buyer's remorse, especially if you love the playability and portability of mini guitars. It is worth it, don't hesitate get one while you can. It is a treasure, and I will never trade this baby. I feel like I found a treasure like no other at an affordable price. No bull! Yours truly, menniscpa.
I got this guitar a few days ago. It sounds great to me. I'm a complete beginner so I don't really have anything to compare it too but so far all my needs are met with this guitar. I think it will serve me well for years to come on my musical journey.
Value way above its selling price! SG purists will disagree but this fits my craving for an SG , & at an unbeatable price. I tested this against Epiphone G400 & G310 in the store (Ishibashi at Tokyo), this wins for me. It's all set up & ready to rock when I bought it from the store, & I'm doing the AC/DC riffs ever since. Thick middy tones abound, unbelievable for its short scale size. I'm leaving it all stock & will buy the worn cherry model next.
I have played all the short scale guitars that are out right now, and this one is by far the best value for the money. It is good enough to use for gigging, stays in tune, and sounds just like an SG.
