I've owned many SG's over the years, including a '73 custom and this Prophecy custom is as good as it gets! The low profile neck is a joy to play! The very first time I picked it up, I was playing runs faster than I thought I was even cappable of! The controls are easy to manipulate...who needs channel switching(?)...I can go from clean, to mean, or scream.. with the guitar's volume control. Oh, yeah..this guitar is georgous!! This is one seriously underpriced SG custom that I am proud to own! Way to go, Epiphone!
Superb playability. The EMG's can't do controlled feedback very well(nobody's perfect!). I would have liked seperate tone controls. On the other hand, they(volume&tone) are positioned for easy manipulation.
Everything about this guitar is top shelf. Very well made

So i had two of these, both buzzed terribly. The quality control for epiphone seems to be far below any ive ever seen. Youre better off saving your money for a low-mid range gibson for a better value.I read the specs on this guitar thinking epiphone possibly had created a decent metal guitar, but i was far from correct. The set neck has a nasty heel to it. The neck seems to be extended farther than a normal sg, so both the ones i had buzzed beyond reason. It didnt even put out a brutal sound.I was wrong for thinking epiphones could be decent, so save your money and dont buy epis!

Incredible!!!!

By thedeadon

I don't know why people are complaining about the quality of this gtr...This thing is insane! For the money it's simply unbeatable. Also, the versatility of this machine is awesome. With a decent amp you can get virtually any sound you want to...I have heard tones and sounds come out of this Prophecy that I have never heard come out of any guitar no matter the price...This unit(EX) has features, playability, tone, looks, TONE, superior to all but the very finest guitars that cost 5X as much. INCREDIBLE, one-of-a-kind instrument!!!!!

Amazing guitar!

By LeadforLife

from Decatur Il. U.S.A.

I bought this guitar around two weeks ago and, I can not say anything other than this guitar is amazing! It is great for the style of music I play and, the EMG pick ups are great! They give me the crunchy sound I love. When I put it in overdrive it has a sound that makes you feel like your face will melt off when you play a nice rift! I love this guitar and, the finish is so much more beautiful in real life.

This guitar is so freaken awesome

By Kevin Sayah

from Undisclosed

If you have the money for this guitar, and you like being able to play a huge variety of music, then buy this guitar. Its amazing and you wont regret it. The neck is nice and thin so you can shred really easy on it, and with 24 frets, its great for down-tuning. The grover tuners on it are amazing, but all Grover tuners in general are great. Epiphone at its best.
It has one volume knob, one tone knob, and a 3 way pickup selector. 2 EMG Pickups. Grover tuners, 24 fret neck.
The finish is beautiful! The sound of the emg's are great for a huge variety of sounds switching from clean to distortion.

I have recently purchased this guitar. I have a Fender American Deluxe Strat, a Fender Tele, the Slash Signature, the Zack Wilde Bullseye, and my new Prophesy.Hands down the Prophesy is my favorite. It sounds incredible, looks awesome, plays fast, and the price is reasonable. It is head heavy, so you need a good strap.

Money Well Spent

By Ironmike69

Look, if you?re like me and on a limited budget then consider this bad boy! First and foremost you?re getting active EMG's. The neck is thin for easy handling and more importantly has extra frets which is an absolute must. I?ve owned this guitar for close to a year now and it still stays in tune and plays like a champ. Like all SG?s the design allows for easy play from the 15th fret and beyond! I?ve stayed away from Epiphones due to past experiences. However, Epiphone has come a long way. The products the company is putting out there days are great products unlike their predecessors. While Gibson is still the superior instrument, Gibson?s sister company Epiphone has bridged the gap dramatically! So buy with confidence, this guitar is loaded for little money!

Just an awesome metal guitar

By Soulsiphoner

from Thessaloniki

It has an Ultra fast and thin speed taper D bound neck. It has an ebony fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets adorned with sick blade inlays. The mahogany body is light weight and the double cutaway of an SG adds even more comfort when you play. This guitar has a beautiful highly quilt maple top in a color Epiphone calls "midnight ebony". It looks even better in person, trust me. The guitar also has a tune o matic bridge, elegant pearl top knobs, grover die-cast tuners, and a 3 way selector Switch. But lets not forget the active EMG 81/85 pickups =]. Its really amazing you can get all this at this price. The EMG 81/85 active pickups are just awesome. They just sound amazing through my Crate 30W amp. Its great for metal, rock, punk, and stuff like that. They have good sustain and pinch harmonics squeal like a beast. The sound has great full and crunchy rhythm tones, and the lead tones are rich and clean. Overall its a great sounding guitar for metal, rock and punk styles. Just don't buy this guitar and expect to get a nice blues or southern rock sound.I bought this guitar in the store and the action was set up just fine.I have not played this Live yet, but everything seems solid on this guitar. The finish doesnt seem like it will wear off anytime soon, and the strap buttons are solid and tight. The hardware will deffinitely hold up.I have been playing for about 2 years and i play a lot of metal, rock and punk. And this guitar suits each of these genres perfectly, and it looks amazing while doing soand its so so easy to play. If it were stolen, id beat the **** out of the guy Who stole it. If i couldnt get it back id deffinitely buy it again. This guitar looks cooler and plays better than most any guitar around this price, from ESP vipers to Jackson dinkys, this guitar blows them out of the water in my opinion. Buy this guitar, you wont regret it.

This Guitar is Amazing

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This guitar sounds great the emg in the bridge is one the best ive ever heard for metal however the neck is not as warm as I'd like it to be. It stays in tune for a lon time and I often don't have to tune it for weeks. The people who say it buzzes is because the pickups are active so its gonna do that unless you have a good amp or a petal attached. The only thing this lacks is a floating floyd. This guitar is well worth it, and will probably be one of the best you've ever played.

Awesome Guitar

By Zen-fEpF0

from Va

This axe has it all.. what more could you ask for.. Grover tuners, Nice wide but skinny fret board for awesome action, 24 frets for 2 full octaves...81/85 active EMG's which sound incredible..best of both worlds, gives you that clean strat sound but when you want to throw some crunch/fuzz/distortion on it.. it will wail! three position selector switch and 1 tone knob and 1 volume knob, which in my opinion is great...simple is better!!! and the paint job is just beautiful.. the sunburst fade to black is just perfect.. The tune -o- matic bridge lets you set your intonation and playability the way you like .. and the what I found amazing was is that this thing is light as a push broom!!! you WILL love this guitar!! I highly recommend to pros and beginners!

THIS GUITAR HAS EVERYTHING

By claytonp1533

from Dartmouth, NS Canada

Every aspect of this guitar is amazing, it had everything i was looking for: fast neck, great hardware, AMAZING pickups, beautiful finish, and best of all, a killer body shape. The main thing I love about this guitar is that it's the biggest SG out there (other SG's have tiny bodies) which adds to the overall look. The neck is satin which makes it extremely fast and easy to play, and the emg's are the best sounding pickups i've ever heard. It's also very comfortable to play. There are two major flaws about this guitar however: One of the straplocks is located directly where the neck joins the body, so its extremely annoying to play some of the higher frets. The other flaw is found on all SG's: it's neck heavy, which means you have to hold the neck up a bit and play at the same time, which is also annoying. But if you move the position of it to the upper horn it should make a difference. Other than those two things the guitar is truly incredible, especially for the price. One more thing, the flame maple blends in more than that of the pictures, it's actually barely noticible which is cool because it makes it look even betterbuy it. I know I am

Epiphone goes Active!

By Charlie-5RMuj

from loveland

An sg with active emg's and a transparent black finish, what more can you ask for? I have a g-400 and the neck on the prophecy is thinner and alot quicker especially with the ebony fretboard. and like any emg's, the pickups are insane. There is an issuse with buzzing on the low e string, but its an easy 2 second fix if you know what your doing. The only other issue I had was one of the strap locks broke the first day so I had to get "real" ones. But other wise for the price this thing is worth it. Quality control for epiphone is higher than gibson right now so this thing is perfect.

emg sg

By muscletruckdude

from dayton ohio

i didnt find it all that great. it looks nice. i like the satin finish on the neck. but i didnt like the neck profile at all. and i wasnt impressed with the emg pickups at all. i have an elitist sg and it is way better. i also have a regular g400 and i like it better too. dont get me wrong this guitar sounds better than the g400 but the neck kinda kills it for me though. but if you can get past the neck its a pretty good metal guitar, but i have played way better guitars for cheaper than this thing .

Best thing since sliced bread

By Rene

I ordered this guitar and boy is it ever nice! It plays as nice as it looks with its' active EMG pickups. As for the body on it, it's a tiny bit different from my G-400 but it's nothing major. I received mine and noticed that the fine details on it are a little "to be revised" but I can do that myself lol. Probably something that happened through shipment or one of those rare ones that slipped beneath the cracks as they say ^_^.Great piece of equipment none the less.

These prophecy guitars are junk. Extremely poorly made and non-existant QC. Mine came with obvious blems and a completely ridiculous set-up. I sent it back immediately! Spend your hard earned cash somewhere else.

This is an amazing guitar with a nice crunchy metal sound, but I have one and it does have a bad buzz. It's not to noticeable but the experienced musician would definitely hear the buzz and it can get really annoying but its a great guitar for the beginner musician.

Holy Crap!!!

By Shredder25

from Rohnert Park, CA

This is the second guitar i have ever owned, and let me tell ya, its a BEAUTY. The finish is one of the most beautiful i have ever seen, and the sound comin out of those EMG 81/85's is incredible. They give you a perfect tone range and with the right effect combos, it do do some serious audio damage. You can go from a tone heavy low sound to a heavy metal shriek at the flick of a switch. Its great for artists like Metallica, The Offspring, and Slipknot. And food for thought, I'm talkin about a USED one. All in all, if your're a metal head or punk fan, this is the shredder for YOU!!

Finally!!!

By DN2HALE

I have owned numerous guitars since I have started playing. I was not a fan of Epiphone at all. I saw the finish and it has emgs, which speak for themselves, I feel in love with this. I ordered and I just received it and I love the guitar. I know that this will be my permanently guitar. The only bad thing is, the strap locks are kinda cheap. I'm going to put dunlops on mine. I would say to definitely purchase this guitar if you want a great sg with a kick!

My opinion of the Epiphone SG Custom EX

By Jeff-XQC-U

See all my reviews

Great guitar for the money! Find a case that fits it! I found a Roadrunner case that fit. What a value for all of the options: ebony fingerboard, 24 frets, and the EMG active pickups are just a few awesome things. The inlays are great, Nice top! I did not like the string action height on the guitar when it arrived, they were too high off the board. Picky players like me should be prepared to make your adjustments to this one. Or have a guitar tech give you a tune up. I adjusted the bridge and pickup height + adjusted the truss rod until the action was very, very low and the fret buzz was gone. The result is a very nice finely tuned guitar that play extremely fast. This is a great guitar now and I am happy that I bought it. Lead guitarists will like the extra frets.
