This is a fun guitar to play and the price is decent.

However I paid for a new guitar and received a used guitar that was in a sloppily taped box. It did not come with any of the Epiphone paperwork, just the guitar in a box.

I got a good price on it with a coupon and the guitar has no big dents or anything, so I saw no need to return it. However it's obviously a used guitar that's been played before and it was covered in fingerprints. Also the exclusion of any paperwork whatsoever was also a pretty big indicator.

Very disappointed with Musiciansfriend for sending me a used guitar when I bought a new one.

This alone will give me pause when considering any other guitar purchases from Musiciansfriend.

Very bad thing to do to a customer buying a new guitar.

I bought one of these Epiphone G-400s several years ago after comparing it to the more expensive SGs. Even though I played it in the store, I struggled to get it tuned properly until I took the trouble to remove the strings, removed the adjusting screws and turned the little "tune o matic" bridge elements around on a couple of strings to get more range (longer), and finally got the thing properly voiced. Having slain that dragon, I lowered the bridge to improve the action and found that much less force was required to contact the frets. THAT, of course, also improved the tuning and voicing issue. A happy side effect is that I no longer have to use leverage against the neck to play bar chords, and since the mahogany neck flexes a bit, the tuning and voicing is even better. String height is almost equal at every point on the neck, with no buzzing. I like being able to bend the neck, but I like it even more that I don't have to use that much force when I don't want to (There's a reason why SGs don't come with a vibrato tailpiece and Strats do -- it's called a maple neck. You can bend an SG, but you won't do it with a Strat). Other than the obvious non-bookmatched solid body and tuners that require some care and feeding, this guitar is now just as good as a 1960s Gibson SG and I'm in love with it -- finally. The finish is as flawless as the high-end SGs. The lesson here is to take the cheaper Epiphones to a good luthier unless you can set it up yourself, and consider replacing the tuning keys. After that, it's a great electric guitar and I can reproduce every note and sound of the surf music and classic rock'n'roll of the 60s. It would be nice to spend over $1000 for a Gibson SG, but the feel and playability is identical and there's no good reason to spend the extra money. I usually play this guitar through a Fender 90 amp (nice overdrive features) and a tremolo pedal to get the "surf" sounds. Inna Gadda Da Vida is a snap. (Any Ventures fans still out there?)

Comments about Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar:

After much research and deciding on the Epi SG I bought it used in mint condition and am well pleased with it. I dialed in the action and set up the Pups for balance and volume and it works remarkably well. I was looking to replace a Gibson that I had years ago but didn't have $1500 to throw down for it. The Gibson was so versatile, you could dial it in and play the really sweet acoustic stuff and then dial it in on the other end and play ZZTop. While it isn't a Gibson the Epiphone does everything I want from it and it works better for slide than anything else I have ever attempted. Some guitars work for slide and some just don't, this one definitely does. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar 8th grade and i loved it. No complaints except for the weight, its REALLY light. The neck is heavier then the body so the center of ballance is all messed up (thats with all SG's) GET STRAPLOCKS!!! other than that everything plays and sounds great. For the value its unbeatable but i would spend the extra 50 and get the G-400PRO model. Overall great guitar for any skill level guitarist.

Comments about Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar:

Purchased the Epiphone SG G-400 as a used mint-1 condition, but it arrived in perfect like new never been played condition.
I was skeptical about buying an Epiphone, but wanted a SG to learn slide guitar and did not want to pay Gibson price.
Anyway, I could use this as my main guitar it plays and sounds so good right out of the box!

I have this guitar over 2 years now so i think i can write a review now. This guitar is one of those that is an incredible amount of......guitar!... that you get for your money. After the 2 years that i have it for it is still holding up pretty good. Some basic problems like the input jack getting lose but nothing major. It sounds good, plays good, feels good, and it looks good. What else can you ask for right?

Comments about Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar:

I've owned a lot of Epiphone instruments over the years. They have all been very good instruments and the vintage G400 is another winner. The fit and finish were perfect right out of the box. I simply tuned it up and was off and jamming for the next hour or so. No buzzes, no dead spots on the neck, everything was PERFECT! I really like the satin finish, it gives the guitar a nice broken in feeling. The pickups respond very nicely to distortion and clean up equally well. In my opinion, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer instrument at this (or any other) price!

I plan on keeping it for a long............... time. A good guitar, good finish, and very good pickups. I should know cause i have been playing for 32 years and going to keep playing for as long as i can.
