I've been playing 22 years. This is the greatest guitar I've ever touched. It actually does play like butter, smooth as silk. There is nothing else like the unfinished maple neck, I just can't get over how great this guitar plays!
On to the quality and finish. Not one single imperfection on this guitar. It is absolutely beautiful. Superb craftsmanship and top notch hardware.
Everything about this guitar blew me away, but the pickups really stand out. I've been a Duncan fan for years until I heard the Dimarzios in the Axis. These things scream and sound phenomenal while doing it. Dial back the volume knob on the guitar and they clean up nice and sweet.
Absolutely the perfect guitar for me. Even the case is top notch and comes with goodies. If I had one complaint, it would be the price. But to me it's worth it considering I've played probably a hundred guitars over the years and none compare to this. Seems like you have to spend $1k to even get anything decent anymore. I'm 100% happy with this guitar, which is a first in my life.

I always wanted to get one of these since I am a huge EVH fan. The guitar looks great and for the price, I expected an exceptional instrument. Unfortunately, I didn't find this. I think the materials (woods, hardware, finish, etc.) are top notch, but the quality control is shoddy. I ended up getting two of them and returned both to MF since I wasn't happy. The first one had neck pocket cracks - which isn't the manufacturers fault - probably happened in transit. The high e-string was also too close to the edge and would fall off the end of the fretboard when doing vibrato. On the 2nd one, the floyd was not flush with the body. With normal action, the floyd base plate had to lean far back to touch the body. For the money, you shouldn't have these issues. On both, I also found the frets too low and had more buzzing than I like. I did setups (truss rod adjustment, string height, etc.) for both, but it didn't help my taste for it. Again, I really wanted to like this guitar, but just couldn't. If you are smart, I think you should save up more $ to get a premium guitar with more consistent quality / playability (e.g. Suhr, Anderson, etc.). My two cents..........

      Awesome craftmanship !

      By Adam St-Laurent

      from Canada

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

Finally, here are the PROS and CONS for me...

      PROS :
      - Quality/Price ratio
      - Awesome Finish
      - Fretting
      - Neck wood and finish (very beautiful and one of the most confortable neck I ever played)
      - Simplicity (3 position toggle switch, vol. knob)
      - Playability
      - Versatility (Rock, Classic Rock, Blues, Instrumental Rock)
      - Pickups (medium output DiMarzios) great sound and stays clean/defined even with distortion !

      CONS :
      - A bit pricey (even though it has a good price/quality ratio)
      - A bit Heavy
      - Would like a thinner neck
      - Would like a compound radius fingerboard (12" to 16") or at least a 12" or 14" fingerboard radius instead of a 10" radius

In sum, this guitar, even though I like my Jackson's neck better, is my new "main axe" because of it's comfortability (a KingV is not that comfortable to play !), it's versatility and its playability.
As I'm a "straight in your face" guitarist I don't really need the tone knob, so for me it's not an issue at all. I also really like the humbucker configuration : Neck, Neck+Bridge (still humbuckers, not splitted) and Bridge. I really like the Neck+Bridge for clean work it's awesome ! In short, this guitar's features are perfect for my playing style.

The only thing I could wish to make this gtr my perfect axe... is a thinner neck. A neck similar to my Jackson's (thin w/compound radius 12" to 16") would be perfect. I'm not really a fan of 10" radius and beafier necks... because I don't have really big hands (a la Paul Gilbert) ! This neck is still awesome in the higher register, but when I want to play a Gadd9 (6th string at 3rd fret) or lower, for exemple, it becomes really uncomfortable and I can't endure this kind of chords for long... while I can with my Jackson, wich has the perfect neck and fingerboard radius ! I'm giving this comparison so you can figure out the differences between the MusicMan's Axis neck and thinner necks (Jackson, Ibanez).

      For that I'm giving a 9/10.
What strikes me about this guitar is the craftmanship and the precision of all the details... I also own a Jackson King-V USA (bought in 2000) and a Fender Fat-strat USA (heavily modified) (bought in 2002), and both of these gtrs have some "mistakes" regarding the fretting (ex.: Jackson frets were not cut and/or buffered in the edges and have one of its fret (not the metal bit but where you put your fingers) damaged in some sort ; my Fender has some "cracks" on the sides of the neck around some of the frets, etc.). But the MusicMan Axis I own... everything was perfect right off the box, the finish (honeyburst on flamed maple top), the fretting, the wiring, the neck/fingerboard finish (awesome bird's eye maple), etc. etc. For that, I'm giving a 10/10 !
I know that MusicMan guitars are expensive, but I think it worth the extra money... and the Axis is not more expensive than the high end Jackson, Ibanez and ESP... so it's a deal anyway ! You wanna have a great "Rock Axe"... look no further ! Because the Axis is, for me, one of the best rock guitar on the market ! And for this price and the quality of the guitar it has a really good "price/quality ratio" !

      Great versatile electric....

      By GeetarGuy211

      from Boston, MA

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I bought my Musicman Axis when I was 15 after my first ever summer job. Let me tell you it was worth the summer's saving. The basswood body is complimented by the maple top giving a very balanced tone. With an overdriven sound you can get deep growling tone but with clarity at the same time which is very reminiscent of many EMG-equipped guitars. At the same time play cleans and the maple top and neck really stand out; you can really run the gamut of clean tones here from warm and smooth almost jazz-esque tones to snappy bright strat and tele cleans. The neck is not too thick not too thin with a great setup and absurdly low action. This is definitely a shredder's guitar if you want it to be, I mean face it, it was originally the Van Halen signature model. The floyd isn't floating but is one of the highest quality locking trems I've ever had the pleasure of using. I almost never tune it and it's never needed repairs ONCE in 6 years of regular gigging, teaching, jamming and daily practice. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a sonically versatile quality player's guitar...

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I have played a lot of guitars especially EVH models and this rivals anything I've played. The action on this guitar is suburb it plays fast if your interested in smooth fast "shredding" this guitar is a must own. And the bolt on neck like some lower end guitars has no effect on the sustain. It also features a single volume knob just like a real EVH guitar and it has a two pick-up toggle switch to control the two custom pick-ups they have a blistering high end and a corroding low end this guitar is a steal. If your interested in taking your playing too a new level this guitar is the guitar to do it.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I am 54 years old, and been playing since I was 12. I own a number of vintage and newer Strats, Gretches, and Gibsons, and bar none, this is the best guitar of the lot. This guitar has it all - workmanship, features, playability, sound, AND the best neck on a guitar I've held. With an ax like this, I might just be playing for another 42 years. I'm glad I took the plunge. - Mike V, Annapolis

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I have owned an Eddie Van Halen Music Man, the equivalent of the newer "Axis" model, for 13 years. I cannot express the satisfaction I have derived from this instrument. The balance of this guitar is perfect; the short-scale neck and compound radius affords players the opportunity to explore stretches, chords, and arpeggios that would seem unequivocally cumbersome on Gibson or Fender instruments. Despite the smaller neck, this instrument is exceptionally playable for guitarists with larger hands. The tone of the Music Man is phenomenal; the accompanying DiMarzio pickups produce harmonics with ease and chords are laden with warmth and definition. Sustain is incredible; when played through a "clean" channel this guitar produces one of the most glassy, bell-like tones imaginable. For impressive effect, couple an Axis with an all-tube, high-gain amp...the tonal possibilities of this guitar are totally lost when used in concert with a Class A or AB1 (w/cathode bias) amp such as a Vox AC30. The results are harsh midrange frequencies and loss of bass definition. I cannot praise this instrument highly enough. It may not be the most versatile electric guitar on the market, but the construction is flawless, the tone is legendary, and the playability is unparalleled.

Best guitar I own, and I own a bunch. eg 56 strat heavy worn relic, les paul classic.
right out of the box it looks good and plays as well as it looks. Its my first go to guitar. I'd buy another if this one broke. pickups are high output but clean up easily rolling down the volume. Stays in tune.......I love the unfinished birds eye maple neck makes it less grabby with sweaty hands, I got the flame top but wished I could of gotten the quilted top but that is just personal opinion. my swiss army guitar. And YES it has the same custom wound EVH Pickups by semour Duncan that is coveted in other EVH guitars. Great setup all around.

Oh, and for the people out there that don't blame Eddy for playing it, that's because he designed this guitar from the ground up (pickups, body, everything)and was forced to leave it because he did not own the rights to any of the designs. This guitar inspires you to play and that is what it's all about!!!

Best Guitar I have ever owned

        By Love Music Man!

        from Maryland

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar because the shop did not have one in stock. I waited almost 4 months for this thing and it was well worth it. Tobacco burst finish is beautiful but more importantly the guitar sounds and plays great. I have never heard a better sounding guitar in my 15 years of playing. You can go from metal to country with no struggle on this guitar. The only issues I have are the lack of range on the tremolo system because it only goes down in pitch. And the neck is unfinished so this guitar is like an expensive girl friend. It needs lots of attention to humidity and string gauge should never change or be messed with. I just keep using the same Ernie Ball strings as the factory put on there. Overall this is the best guitar I think that is out there for any style of music.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Electric Guitar:

I always wanted the EVH version of this guitar but couldn't afford it back in the early 90's. This guitar is the same thing without the EVH name on it. It plays great, it looks different yet cool. The neck is unfinished and feels great. I don't rate setup because that's something I always do myself and you should learn to do it too. Most guys set their action WAY too low and then they get buzzing. That ain't the guitar's fault.
