Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Trem Electric Guitar:

The EBMM Stingray is a blast from the past. The original Stingray first hit the market in the mid '70's and has been revived for 2016. There's nothing revolutionary about the design, except that it has modern touches to make it more appealing to today's guitar player.

In full disclosure, I did not buy my Stingray from Musician's Friend, though I have bought many guitars and other musical gear from them over the years. I found my Vintage Tobacco Stingray in a local guitar shop and was actually able to try it before I bought it.

First of all it's a Music Man, so you know you're getting a high quality guitar. Fit and finish are excellent. The combination of African Mahogany body and EBMM custom wound humbuckers produce a warm tone. The pickups are not your typical high output PAF, but they're not real subtle, either. Note articulation is there as are harmonics. The neck pickup is really good for blues or jazz, and the bridge humbucker can get you into Les Paul territory. The middle position is fantastic for funky stuff, Jimmy Page type riffing, and clean playing. I'm not in any rush to replace them, that's for sure.

The neck is buttery with its 10" radius fretboard - not too flat or too round. It's perfect for all genres. The asymmetric neck carve is a bonus, which really aides in upper fret access. Factory setup is pretty good. It comes stock with .10 - .46 gauge strings, though I have a preference for .09 - .042 on a 25.5" scale length. The 10's are cool, but those Pink Floyd 2-step blues bends take a little extra effort. The tremelo seems a bit stiff, which is not doubt because an extra spring has been added to accommodate the larger gauge strings. One of the things I love about EBMM guitars is they're easy to set up. A change in strings to 9's is easy.

I love the somewhat retro feel and look of the guitar. The head stock is a bit different than the rest of their 6-string guitars, but in a cool way. The chrome accents are a nice touch, as well.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Trem Electric Guitar:

Very high quality guitar. The neck and frets are the best I have seen from any other guitar. Very solid feel and great tone, wide range of tone. Twank to hard rock/old school metal. Really a great value for the money.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Trem Electric Guitar:

Although my first guitar of the Ernie Ball Music Man brand, the quality build of this instrument is in direct lineage to their entire line of instruments. The Sting Ray is a remake of an old design, one which I believe Leo was involved with or designed himself (Taking cues from the bass of the same name), and they really hit a home run with this one. The pickups are custom wound and are really low to medium output, but that doesnt stop me from drop tuning and playing heavy through a higher gain amp. ( Dont get me wrong, they still have nice breakup and the neck pickup is more musical than I had thought was possible.)The best thing about the guitar when I got it was the setup, strings and intonation were so good it made me start finger picking again. Walking around the house playing without a pick, which is odd for me but a welcome change. Bottom line, the guitar made me want to play again and I dont think it was just because it was a new instrument. This is a great guitar, but a little on the heavy side, so take that into consideration. I also had a little trouble adjusting my body to the contour, but I think that is another reason it made me start finger picking. (adjusting arm and hand position, etc.) Really does sound like a bolt on LP when plugged in. ( An older one from what I can remember.) Great guitar! Get one if ya have the means!
