Pleasantly Surprised

By LPmaniac

from New Jersey

I was a gigging guitar player 15-20 years ago. Last year I started playing again for fun and was looking for a moderate priced guitar that could handle multiple styles. I checked out the Epi's and was not impressed. I saw this baby hanging on the wall and gave it a shot. I'm glad I did. This guitar is versatile. It can handle metal/thrash and sounds great clean. It really comes alive with a little overdrive....sounding like vintage 1974.I don't know why they discontinued this model. You won't find a guitar that sounds as good as this with the same features at this price. If you happen to find one still hanging on the wall grab it. As has been said here the pictures do not do it justice. It looks even better. I have the Tobacco burst and couldn't be more pleased. This is a main axe and a keeper.

Own it. Love it.

Fit and finish is top notch with no visible flaws. The binding is tight and flat. Neck is perfect, action only needed to be lowered a fraction. The frets are smooth and tight with no sharp edges. All electronic pots and inputs are solid and free from buzz and noise. The JB bridge pickup is HOT. Perfect for Zeppelin, Rhoades, Skynard or GnR. The 59' neck pickup is mellow and perfect for rhythm, jazz and blues. I shopped for 6 months, playing every LP, SG, Flying V and the various clones available. This guitar is better fit, finish and electronics than LP studio, BFG or low end Gibson specials. The neck was more solid and comfortable than the Ibanez Art single cuts. The two volume controls beat out the PRS SE single cut for features. The tone is full and fills your ear through all tube Marshall stack or smaller solid state practice amp.Don't be fooled by the name on other guitars. Buy for quality and tone. I was prepared to spend 2x this for a mid priced, quality instrument, but didn't have to. Top shelf instrument for 1/3 the cost.

A beauty and a beast... All in one...

By mr_jakestyle

from Chico, CA

I was set to plop down the majority of my savings account on a Gibson until I played this beauty. I have the tobacco sunburst model, and it has a beautiful flamed maple talk. The setup was perfect from the box, however I did lower the pickups to suit my tastes. The pickups are unbelievable. The JB is a beast, and the Jazz is sweet and articulate. This guitar will give you the best bang for your buck. Buy it. Now.

I bought this guitar about 6 months ago. Upon arrival, the pickups appeared to be microphonic, but it was just a bad wire. This is a great guitar, with great features. I can play ANYTHING with mine, and everyone who plays it, falls in love with it.

this guitar is just beautiful in tobacco finish... i have played numerous guitars including gibsons and for this price, you can't beat it... grovers keep it in tune, i think if you would want to spend more, i will next go for the ec-500 for the pickups and for the result with this one, i can't wait to get another one.... the ec-500 i will paint the zakk wylde signature bullseye, just because i think it would look cool..... the seymour duncans kick a** as well

Great Buy

I have owned this guitar for a year now and still happy with it. Made in Korea, solid construction. Only thing I had to do to it is rework the bridge because the saddles were all facing the same direction. May or may not effect anything, but seems 3 should go one way and 3 the other. I filed the nut out and the low 4 saddles and put on 13's so I tune it to dropped Bb. Sounds very aggressive dirty. When playing clean, the JB pickup (bridge) is so hot I can't get really clean. So I gotta use the 59 and roll the volume back... Butter smooth and thick. Very nice to look at as well (I got the tobacco burst). You'll need strap locks, its pretty heavy... as les paul styles should be. BALLSY!

Forget Epiphone

This guitar is incredible. If you are looking for a Les Paul style guitar that kicks butt and can hold its own against the Gibsons, Get this guitar!! At first I ordered an Epi Custom Silverburst. When it came in, it was a mess with lots of problems. I have played other Epis that were nice, but the one I got sucked. Went back to the drawing board and found this beauty. Action from factory is nice and low, little fret buzzing, but only what's to be expected from a brand new guitar. All I had to do was lower the bridge pickup and tune it. The Duncans in this thing are probably the most versitile pickup configuration currently available. In the $600 range of LP style guitars, this is the cream of the crop. Personally I have played Gibsons that were not this nice. Also I believe this is the only full thickness ESP EC model available thats in their current product line. It doesn't say it on their web site, but this is the same thickness as a Les Paul. Its heavy, but the tone is well worth it. The only thing I wish it had was the second tone knob, but Gibson got scared (with good reason) and had to file a lawsuit against ESP. That's why I gave features a 4.5 instead of 5. Buy this guitar, Its amazing, and it can be used for any genre of music.

This ESP is worth a look

By Vinz

from NY

Just got my ESP EC400VF yesterday. Arrived in immaculate condition, barring the fact that there was a size 12 converse sneaker footprint clearly imprinted over the top of the box. Suffice to say the inner packing held its own, however minimalistic it seemed. Set up was good, just droppped the action to suite my taste, Picks ups are very nice and the body as whole is very attractive especially in this tobacco sunburst. I am not a big EMG fan anyways, so the SD's are just perfect for me. Maybe a tad difficult to reach upper frets 17-21..which also reflects my skill level or lack thereof. Learnt fade to black within a day of receiving it. In one word I am satisfied and inspired to learn more.

Beautifull Guitar!!

My ESP 400vf arrived today, I have to say.... This thing is an awesome guitar for the price. The attention to detail is amaizing! The Duncans pump out a beautifull bluessy kinda sound on the clean channel the sound very articulate and crisp with distortion. I gave the features 4.5 because I find the neck to be a bit big, but then again Gibson necks are big too so.... It is an awesome versatile guitar, I'd buy it again if it were stolen. If you are a metal player I recomend you check out the EC500 and EC1000 first.

I have had miine for a few years. It plays better, sounds better, and is made better than any Epi I ever played. It beats most Gibsons in terms of build quality, tone, and versatility. The stock JB/59 pickups are perfect for this guitar. It'll do Blues, Jazz, Rock, Metal, etc. They new model is the 401 and I have not played it so I can't comment on how the two compare - but the 400 is Korean and quality is top notch.

Amazingly amazing!

I can't say anything negative about this guitar. The ESP LTD EC-400VF comes with seymour duncan pickups, an earvana compensated nut, grover tuners, and a tune-o-matic bridge. The pickups are excellent at any genre of music, they arent weak or anythingthe earvana nut helps give more accurate intonation across the fretboard and is not awkward or odd to string up.the grover tuners keep things in tune perfectly, it does not go out of tune unless they are new strings which are stretching out but otherwise they are amazing.and the tune-o-matic bridge is very nice, it also gives good intonation by allowing a good deal of adjustment for each stringthe neck is nice and thin and the finish is just stunning. I have the tobacco sunburst finish and the pictures here dont do it any justice. overall, a great buy for the price, i highly reccomend it if you want an ESP but dont want to spend tons of money or get a really dark looking guitar.

The Evolution Of The Les Paul!!!

By ValveronixForLife1080

See all my reviews

Well, I got mine in my local guitar store three weeks ago and I'm A very proud and happy owner! I wasn't a fan of ESP guitars, but after play this one it totally blew me away! I was about to buy the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus but I've heard not so good things about it, especially in the electronics, by other hand, the Seymour Duncan pickups make this guitar is so versatile!!! I can use for not just metal, I play every kind of music with it! I play it through a Vox Valvetronix ADVT100 combo and works just awesome! a versatile guitar with a versatile amp! It's a perfect line-up! so the look of this guitar is beautiful! my is faded cherry sunburst just to keep the Les Paul finish tradition, my only comps are that I had To adjust some loose pieces when I brought it home, but now works just fine, and is a pity it doesn't have the typical four-knob controls, otherwise that would be a worthy rival for some Gibson Les Paul guitars! definitely recommended if you want a Les Paul-shaped guitar with a good quality and great tone!

Excellent upgrade for my son

By VoiceOfReason

from MD

See all my reviews

For the money, you really can't get a better Les Paul styled guitar than this. I bought this for my son. He has been playing about 3 years now. He takes lessons and practices all the time (every day). He has become a passionate guitar player and deserved an upgrade. He previously had a crappy $150 guitar and a crappy $99 amp. This guitar sounds fantastic and is a HUGE upgrade for him. The Seymour Duncan pickups are excellent; especially the bridge pickup. The neck is nice and thin, and perfect for a young kid that isn't fully grown yet. My son plays a lot of metal, and this thing has a lot of good crunch with distortion on. This guitar also sounds great clean; plus it has a nice vintage tone that is perfect for 60s/70s era classic rock. No quality issues at all. Again, for the money, you can't beat this thing. Stay away from Epiphone. An ESP LTD Les Paul is a much better instrument. He has this paired with a Line 6 Spider III 75 watt amp (which is also an outstanding product for the $$$). This guitar combined with the Line 6 is perfect for him. He got a great guitar and great amp for under $1000.

I have the ESP Eclipse II - not the LTD version. I just got the EC-400VF for a "back-up" last week and played my first gig with it. My $1400 Eclipse II is now my "back-up".This axe has a look, feel and sound that I cannot put into words. I am very, very pleased with it!
