First thing I noticed when I pulled this out of the box was the quality of the wood. This guitar is made with some nice chunks of mahogany. Second thing I noticed was some slightly sloppy work on the neck binding, but it didn't bother me too much.

Then I plugged it in, and was quickly disappointed. These guitars have stacked p90's, which are supposed to eliminate hum. However, this guitar hums louder than my Gibson with single coil p90's. The sound doesn't have that P90 "bite" to it either; the pickups sound pretty dull and lifeless, like a cheap humbucker. According to ESP, "the new Viper-256P offers two ESP LP90S pickups, which provide all the bite and high output you want while avoiding all the hum that you don't."

That's backwards; they eliminate all the bite you want, while providing all the hum you don't.

Comments about ESP LTD Viper 256 P Electric Guitar:

What can I say that hasn't already been said. This guitar is worth every penny and more. With a solid neck through the body design, and action to die for. The gold hardware alone sets this black beauty apart from other axes in the same price range. Sure there is some pickup hum, but that's what noise gates are made for. I will tell you that I own a Gibson Les Paul that is every bit as noisy. Slap a NG on it and it purrs like a kitten. Monster tone from the P90's that will growl when needed and sing softly during that dynamic change in the song you are playing. This is my first ESP and I'm sure it won't be my last. I am compelled to pick this up and play it whenever it catches my eye and I own seven different gitters. This one hugs you warmly, just like a Viper wrapping it's coils around you.

I own another LTD guitar and I have been impressed with the quality of these affordable guitars. Like other reviewer said, this one feels like an expensive guitar with attention to details. Solid wood, decent hardware, P90 pickups, stays on tune and sounds great unplugged too.

This is a great product. I have alot of high end gear but had never owned anythign with p90 style pups. It feels like an instrument in a higher price bracket. It plays like butter and I haven't put it down since getting it. p90's come with a little extra noise to wrestle with but they produce such great tone its worth it. I won't turn my nose up at the LTD line anymore....this is something you can get for someone that you won't have to worry about them out growing. It only needed one very minor adjustment to the bridge out of the box and it was golden. If it were lost or stolen I would purchase it again or buy one of thier higher end models

Comments about ESP LTD Viper 256 P Electric Guitar:

After reading some marginal reviews of this guitar I wasn't sure what to expect when it arrived. I don't know about the guitars the other reviewers received but mine is very nice. Excellent build quality, nice attention to detail, nice appointments, etc. The P90 pickups are some of the best sounding I have owned. They are much closer to a humbucker than a single coil and have plenty of output. I would highly recommend this guitar for the price. I got it on teh Stupid Deal of the Day which was an incredible price but it is worth the standard MF price. Nicer than the comparable Epiphone SG.

Comments about ESP LTD Viper 256 P Electric Guitar:

The reason I give this guitar 2 stars is the sound and performance of this guitar.

But let me start with the pros. When I pulled this guitar out of the box, I was blown away. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful guitars I've seen. Absolutely stunning, it just looks solid. I love the finish, the binding, the wood, the hardware, everything just looks great!

Then I plugged it in...right away I thought something was wrong. I actually thought that I didn't turn the tone up...but no it was up. The pick-ups are really dull...like really. There's no high end, no bite, no nothing. Also, the hum that these pick-ups create is absolutely horrible and beyond worse than any hum I've ever experienced from a guitar. It even hums on a clean channel.

Another con, is that the neck is heavier than the body so the guitar tends to lean down...but I notice that problem on Epiphone SG guitars as well.

Another con is the horrible fret buzz...its pretty bad. I can probably tweak it but it just shows you horrible set up on this guitar.

So, in any event, I would say be weary about buying this guitar. Like I said, it looks beautiful, so if you're willing to adjust and even replace the pick-ups and make some tweaks, you'll probably have a great guitar...if not...look somewhere else. I honestly suggest going with Ibanez or Schecter, two brands that honestly have not let me down, even on their lower end models. ESP did not win a customer with this guitar.
