OVERVIEW

An ode to the guitars made famous by Eddie Van Halen when he was blowing minds on and off stage.

Underneath the recognizable artwork are basswood Stratocaster-style bodies with quartersawn maple necks, a hand-rubbed oil finish and thumbwheel truss rod adjustment, compound-radius maple fingerboard (12"-16") with 22 jumbo frets and black dot inlays, plus a single ferocious direct-mount Wolfgang humbucking pickup.

Other premium features include a single volume control knob, single-ply black pickguard (on the white and black striped model only), bar string retainer and Floyd Rose locking nut, EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo with EVH D-Tuna, EVH die-cast tuners, chrome hardware, vintage-style strap buttons and EVH neck plate.

After 3 1/2 months of waiting for this guitar, I finally received it yesterday. Out of the box, the EVH Striped Series (Red, White, Black) guitar had a great setup and straight neck. The finish is exactly what I had hoped for (no flaws), and I was very satisfied.

I was also impressed by the fretwork. Frets are beveled and polished - much nicer than I had expected, and far better than on my old Charvel EVH Art Series (I also own the Black/Yellow Charvel Art Series guitar.) I experienced no fret buzz and don't have any notes fretting out when I over-bend, which I experience often with Fender Stratocasters in the upper 17th + frets on the 1st and 2nd string. Overall, this is a great guitar.

Although the Musician's Friend description does not state that the neck is the same as a Wolfgang with a different headstock, I believe this to be the case. The neck does have a great feel. It is very different from the Charvel EVH Art Series - not as "thick" and a bit flatter. I like both, but my personal preference is the Charvel Art Series. I also prefer the pickup in the Charvel Art Series over the Wolfgang. They are definitely NOT the same pickup. The Wolfgang pickup seems a bit too bright to me, at least in this guitar. Definitely not going to get the classic "brown sound" with this pickup, but you will get 5150 era and beyond. It sounds a lot like a Duncan Custom Custom, with a 500K pot in a basswood guitar. If I planned on using this guitar to gig, I would change the volume pot to a 250K pot to cut back on the high mids. This is a personal preference, but I think that the pickup is too bright for this guitar's maple neck/basswood body.

Floyd and D-tuna work perfectly, although the D-tuna is very close to the surface of the guitar body and is in danger of scratching the finish when being used - exercise caution when using it!

Finally, the picture on Musician's Friend site indicates no "EVH" logo on the headstock. This is not the case. There is an EVH logo on the headstock of the Red/White/Black model as well as the others. This was not a surprise to me, but it is worth mentioning for those that might not be expecting a logo on this model.

I gave it 4 out of 5 stars due to the pickup and D-tuna issues, mentioned above.

I bought this guitar as more of a collector's item than for regular use. It would not be my go-to guitar for gigging, other than for the effect, if I were to play a VH song. All in all, this is a very solid guitar and I am very satisfied with my purchase. A great value for the price! I only wish that there was an optional EVH hardshell case that you could purchase with it.

The paint job on the body is mint. Nice light weight body. The hardware seem's to be good quality.
The BAD - Fret end's you could shave with, The Bridge is not Stabilized. Tightening the bridge springs so the bridge tilt's back and touches' the body is not what they mean. You almost can't use the D-Tuna .

From EVH web site: http://www.dtuna.com/setup.php

1. Stabilize Bridge:
If your bridge is flush mounted against the body of your guitar (does not pull up) you can skip this step.
If your bridge "floats," then it must be stabilized. There are two different ways to do this. The easiest way is to "block" the bridge so it doesn't pull up. Use a shim or wedge on the block of the bridge in the tremolo cavity. Make it snug so that the tremolo base plate is level with the body and will not pull back.

The other option to stabilize and still be able to "pull up" on the bar is to install a tremolo stabilizer or stopper. There are many options for this, please consult D-Tuna customer service for a personalized solution to meet YOUR needs best.

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

I don't understand some of the negative reviews of this guitar. I suppose it depends on the shipping or quality of factory personnel.

I got a black/white striped. It wasn't in tune out of the box but I would'nt have expected to be. It was, however set up properly and ready to play. I like this guitar more than the Wolfgang series because it's a bigger guitar - Wolfgangs are small. I play through Messa Boogie, I have to say when I plugged in the tone was very obvious - warm, heavy. The first song I played was Panama, the tone sounded a lot like the actual record.

I understand why the neck is unpolished, you can really feel the wood of the neck and it seems to help with expressing yourself better. The simplicity of this guitar verses it's versatility is sort of a paradox. Back of the volume knob and the sound cleans up nicely. Strum the guitar where a neck pickup would be and you get a nice acoustic feel.

If you stop and think that Ed actually made the original years ago, it's sort of amazing. Ed is kind of like the Michael Jordon of guitar playing, he's transcended a guitar that has inspirered many of who may not of even thought about playing guiar in the first place.

There are bound to be factory defects when you are mass producing a musical instrument and especially when shipping it through out the US. I would imagine the number of defects versus the number of non-defect guitars would be low.

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

Love this guitar. Got one for christmas.
Now I can get the vh sound! And it's so choice! If you have the means, I highly suggest you pick one up. I'm so into the 80's again, and this guitar has me spending my time relearning classics like you really got me, somebody get me a doctor, dance the night away... It makes it so much easier to get those sounds, and it's such an awesome superstrat- the first real superstrat! It's so lightweight, I can play all day and night. My other strat is in it's case- too heavy.
Love tapping and dive bombing all day, and getting that horse whinny, and breaking glass harmonics- wow! Fun! It's what vh was all about and it looks so cool.
Best guitar I got in a while, my favorite toy, makes me want to play all the time!

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar just last week, and it's definitley a player. It had one small issue in the lock nut that was easily fixed. This guitar has a great feel and is very easy to play. It sounds great and was setup well right out of the box. You can dive bomb all day long, make it scream and it comes back still perfectly in tune. You use the d-tuner for some drop tuning songs and it is perfectly in tune, then slam it back in place and it is still perfectly in tune. The intonation is perfect, I can play anywhere even with my heavy fingers, where it is perfectly in tune and sounds great.

I have a tube amp with the gain all the way up, so this guitar screams, then I just back down the volume a little bit and it cleans up beautifully. My Gibson Les Paul doesn't even cleanup as well as this Wolfgang Pickup does when you back down on the volume. I get that really nice brown sound tone, just as you would expect from an EVH Striped Series guitar. All I have to say is... That is a fantastic purchase and one of the best guitars I have purchased in a long time.

This guitar has made me come up with some new interesting sounds and combinations.. Yes I was worried about ordering a EVH guitar but I have 2 and they both play like butter.. The neh sayers really must have had a bad batch or are busting on the EVH name.. I would highly recommend this guitar because it is what King Edward is all about.. Oh and as for the neck feeling dirty because your bodies oils sink in and make it play better.. Sorry but it does not play slow it plays just the way it is supposed too.. Enjoy it if you buy it :)

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

The guitar body feels good, and looks very good, however i cant say the same for the neck and the fretboard. The neck feels sloooooowwwwww and it gets dirty nasty and grimmy really quickly, it wouldve been much better if they had the light coating that fender typically uses for the necks. Also the fretboard feels dryyy and slow. The tone of the humbucker was not that great for metal, speacially not for thrash, deathmetal and black metal. for classic rock and classic hard rock its good though. So thats that, at this price point theres much better options like jacksons, charvels, or fenders

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

I received the first EVH Striped guitar a week or two ago. Completely set up poorly/improperly. Guitar could NOT stay in tune even with Floyd Rose engaged even after flexing strings. De-Tuner? In: Perfect E. Out (detuned) - C#. Its supposed to be 1 step only. Returned that guitar...received replacement. Was working great for 5 days - then the pick-up completely died out of the blue. Extremely disappointing! Plus, the D-Tuner is set-up ANGLED TOWARDS THE BODY - you cannot use the microtuners on the bridge, if you do, you'll lower the DTuna INTO the body scratching up the paint. I own a wolfgang EVH and, while not expecting the same level of quality, was expecting at least FUNCTIONALITY. I know the guitar is cool looking - but seriously, think twice...maybe take some more time and save up for the Wolfgang.

Comments about EVH Striped Series Electric Guitar:

After 5 months, the electronics quit. Like a piece of junk. PERIOD. Love the guitar, but that's WRONG. I've only played it at home, it's never been played out. For 900 bones, I got robbed.

I've bought some pieces of junk from Musician's Friend for beater practice guitars and they still work and serve their purpose.

This one died after 5 months.

I've got two Les Pauls over 20 years old, worth thousands, that I've played on stage for years and they're always reliable.

The problem with this EVH "art" might be an easy fix, but y'know what, I'm a player not a tech, and I shouldn't have to fix ANYTHING on brand new Eddie Van Halen endorsed guitar.

              Beyond disappointed!

I bought it to get a feel for Eddie's set up. But NOW I think it's all just a SCAM.

              Selling art instead of integrity.
