Blending some of the best qualities of Fender and Gibson instruments, Dennis Fano has created a new breed of guitar: The Fano Alt-De Facto MG6. While the overall vibe speaks to a Fender Jazzmaster or Mustang, the Lollar Imperial P90s provide Gibson-like tone and power that can hang with any Les Paul. Kinda' like a Strat on steroids.
As with other Fanos, the craftsmanship is top notch. My guitar was slightly aged -- just enough so you don't feel like you've got to baby it. The neck profile is fairly thick, but is still quite comfortable to my hands. The weight of the guitar is heavier than I expected, but is resonant and well-balanced. The tremolo (with 3 springs) is a bit stiffer than most Strats, useful for adding shimmer or color.
I have several guitars with P90 pickups, and the MG6 may the best of the bunch. The Lollars respond well to how hard to you hit the strings, venturing from sweet-and-toneful to Live at Leeds. As testimony to a well-engineered design, all three pickup selections sound great on this ax. Add the functionality of Fano's Tonestyler tone knob and you'll find yourself lost in Toneland for hours at a time.
For those who want the feel and versatility of a Strat combined with the fullness and power of Les Paul, this could be your dream guitar. But, be forewarned: This guitar is a beast. While it's quite capable of plucky, clean tones, it's my impression that it's truly happy pushing an amp into overdrive.
