Four decades later the Mustang still has the punch that made it a trademark rocker.

Fender's reissue of the '65 Mustang Electric Guitar, hearkens back to the first full year of Mustang production. The Mustang guitar was originally conceived as a student model but over time it's been seen on some important shoulders including those of David Byrne, John Frusciante, Kurt Cobain, Todd Rundgren, and Adrian Belew to name just a few!

This reissue Mustang has great color and cosmetic options, as well as a heightened level of period-correct detailing (body wood, logos, etc.)

In my review of the Mustang Special, I had said that it was the best Mustang; but that was before I played this one. This is certainly my favorite Fender guitar, perhaps even my favorite guitar entirely. I still like the Mustang Special, but that's more like a Stratocaster in some ways. If you're looking for a real, high quality Fender Mustang, this is the one (by those terms it's the only "real" Mustang left). Playability is extraordinary, pickups are amazing (no muddiness or anything like that), and is just a really great guitar. The only thing keeping me from buying one is the price, but if you can afford it it's totally worth it.
Possibly the best guitar ever made

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

These are great Guitars, simply put.I played one in my local [@] this week and felt compelled to write a review. I own a 1964 Duosonic-2 and in comparison these are not too far off the mark. I love the handmade neck on the Pre CBS guitar but you cant even get one of those from the custom shop, so whats the point in holding that against this Mustang? I suppose Fender people insist on the longer scale necks, thats probably why this family of guitars, including the Musicmaster and the Duosonic, have always undersold. I play a Gibson Les paul mostly so i love the necks on these things. I would take one of these over a strat or a tele any day. For Rock, especially hard rock, these are little monsters - kind of like Fender's take on the SG Special except i prefer these to an SG.Ive heard some complaints about the trem but there again, i prefer a Maestro anyway if i have to have a trem, so i dont have any problems with this type. The way the pickups are wired and switched is genius, you can get straight fender twang or something like a humbucker roar but still in Fender sound-territory. And i love the looks.

      EXPENSIVE!

      By Jared

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

This might be the only model Fender currently makes where you could go buy all custom parts from Warmoth and assemble the guitar yourself for 60% of Fender's price. So... you're paying $300 extra for the Fender logo on the headstock. Not worth it for me.
      It's a 2 single-coil pickup guitar. Straightforward.
      It's made like a non-American Fender.
      Eh.

      Too Expensive!

      By DaveHB

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

I had a 1972 Competition blue Mustang back in the 80's and have also played the new ones. The new ones are actually a little better built than what mine was. But, the price is a joke. That line of guitars was orginallly meant to be a beginner or student guitar. Because of Kurt Cobain and the fact that he used one, I cannot afford one of the new ones much less an vintage one. The whole Fender line increased in price a while back but this guitar went up by $200 or more. It should cost about what a MIM Strat costs because that's about the level it is on. Come on Fender, seriously. Put the price to where it belongs and I would be glad to buy one and be a pround Mustang owner once again.

      It is what it is...

      By ChrisW-_PHuk

      from North Carolina

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

The Fender Mustang was my first "real" guitar, back in high school. I thought it was sort of cool that they were doing a reissue, yet it wasn't really that great of a guitar to begin with. Back in the late 70s/early 80s you could catch them all day long at pawn shops for about 100 bucks. So, anyway, good to see the Mustang back, just not sure if it's worth the price for a little "vintage vibe" from a guitar that's mostly mediocre at best...

Great, but Cut the Price in HALF!

      By Stonewall Jackson

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

I've owned this guitar for nearly 2 years now and I love it. I got mine just before they jumped up to nearly a grand. Mine was over $700 and I thought that was about $200 too high. Don't get me wrong, it's a great guitar and I have no intentions of selling it. It works for blues, surf-rock, alt.-rock and classic rock very well. These are infinitely better than the originals from the 60s-80s. Fender did an excellent job making it look vintage to the tee! I got the Olympic White with Red Tortoise-Shell pick-guard (the best of the the 3 color schemes). The 24" scale is great for my small fingers. I'm not letting go of mine, and the Japanese-made Fenders rival the American in my opinion, but another reviewer had it right when he said the price sky-rocketed because of Kurt Cobain. I don't think he'd even play one if he were alive today b/c they're so mainstream and ridiculously priced. If I were in the market for one these days, I'd just invest in an American-made Strat for $60 more. Great guitar, though, I will say that.

Make it $700 and we got a deal!

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

The 1k price is outrageous. I've wanted wanted one of these for 7 years but i CANNOT AFFORD IT! Lower the price Fender and these babies will sell. If not keep it the same and discontinue it for the 100th time and bring it back in 10 years, maybe by then I'll be able to afford it!

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

I had always wanted one of these, I got some $ together and looked to buy.. and found that the price has skyrocketed to a ridiculous level. I ended up with a Duo Soinc RI which I found on sale for $199! I played that for a while & enjoyed it very much. (quality was basicaly the same at the Mustang)After saving a bit & selling a few things I purchased a US made G&L SC-2 which has a more stable trem set up when compared to the Mustang and truly professional pickups and electronics..and includes a serious gigbag... all for the same price as the Japansese made Mustang. This is still a cool guitar but no longer good value for money..

      $1000 bucks really?

      By RandomCommentGuy

      from Austin, TX

Comments about Fender '65 Mustang Reissue Electric Guitar:

If you're going to shell out a grand I'd suggest to get a different guitar. This guitar used to be around $600 which is where it should be. Its not a bad guitar by any means, but you'd be better off getting a mexican tele/strat that comes with texas specials or noiseless pickups. If your someone with bigger hands you'll really want to stay away from this guitar. The small scale neck doesn't become an issue until you try going below the 12th fret, at which my fingers felt really crammed together.
