What a killer axe. It has it all. Some would complain about the Tex Mex pickups but the S-1 switching negates most of that issue. Sure, you can upgrade but the pickups would be the only thing one might want, or need, to change. Everything else is already there. Rollernut, S-1 switching, locking tuners, new style tremolo system, and straplocks. It's Santa Claus all in one box!!! It is an American Deluxe, with the exception of the pickups, but you get the same American craftmanship, with a mahogany body thrown in for free. The Fullerplast undercoating controversy is a very real thing, in terms of wood tone, but this axe still retains the mahogany tone quality even if it's buried in a coffin of plastic. (All of em are) The S-1 switching reaquires any wood tone that may get lost. Listing all my amps would be redundant because this axe sounds just as good out of my Vox practice amp as it does out of my Mesa Boogie. I have the 72 Tele that I mentioned and an Epi Les Paul Black Beauty, a Nashville Tele Deluxe(upgraded pickups) and a Line 6-700. All are great guitars, in their own right, but if I don't feel like wagging all of them to the gig 5 nights a week, all I gotta do is bring this Strat and it covers all those bases. And.... this Strat sound is not and cannot be reproduced on a Line 6 guitar no matter how you configure Workbench software. If I had a complaint, it would be that Fender factory setups are based on 46-09 guage strings. 10's would make more sense, but then our beloved guitar techs would make less money. They need to stay happy!!!...and available!!! It is curious that Fender doesn't, to date, list this axe on their website. So,Thank you for making this axe available.

Could not wait to get this guitar after, when it arrived I received a nicely finished ghitar as far as looks, and it certainly sounds great. All was well except the frets that literally could lacerate the hand, they were not finished up. Also the volume knob had a rough notchy feeling to it, overall a real pain and disappointment to have to ship it back- and a real surprise that Fender let this one out of the shop- after all a guitar like this should not need to go to the shop the day you get it for fret work ! Maybe I just got that one lemon, and I was real tempted to have them send me another, I just do not want to go through another exchange.

The Perfect Strat

By Ben Grose

from Seattle

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

In general, the Stratocaster is loved by the lightweights in the music world--the blues lovers, light rockers, etc. This Stratocaster is a completely different beast, and indeed will not be quite what the typical Strat lovers are looking for. The Mahogany body, first and foremost, drives the tone of the guitar into a rich low growl that, upon the application of gain, becomes a perfect metal tone. The wiring of the guitar--not understood by many reviewing the instrument--allows the typical strat pickup selection when the volume button is not depressed, and, when it is depressed, allows for all three of the pickups to be used simultaneously. The result is a nice, high output from the guitar--no note is suppressed.

I primarily play metal, and this guitar, for me, is number one. Its tone is brutal and perfect, its pickup selection allows for a large number of combinations that ultimately result in the ability to tailor the perfect tone for whatever the metal player may need. I have owned this guitar for years, and I have only loved it more as I have used it--truly, I will never need another guitar. That being said, if you are looking for the typical annoying sound most stratocasters produce--you will be disappointed by this instrument.

A Must Own Deluxe Fender!

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

This is identical to the American Deluxe models. The mahogany body is the only difference. Strap locks, locking tuners, advanced trem bar and locking tuners are included. Very comfortable and beautiful guitar. The pickups are raw, sweet and clear all at the same time. This guitar is slightly heavier than other Fenders, but still very light overall. The neck is smooth and fast. Don't let this one slip away!

Interesting Guitar

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

This is an interesting Stratocaster, but it doesn't feel much like one. It's MUCH heavier than a standard Strat and sounds very different. The bridge pup on a twin-reverb sounds almost like a mix between a Les Paul and a telecaster. The single coils sound meek in comparison. It's not my cup of tea, but it's a quality guitar and it definetely has presence.

The dark red finish with the black pickguard looks stupid to me. If it comes in other colors, I recommend getting it.
My brother owns this and I've spent a LOT of time playing it. This is a very versatile guitar. It's got the standard 5-way switch (if I remember correctly) and it even has a little button that lets you split the coils (presumably). To be honest I wasn't sure what all the buttons and switches did, but you can have a fairly wide range of sounds from this guitar.

However, the body is made of mahogany so you will not really get that "classic" strat sound, if that's what you're into. The humbucker sounds really fat and sounds great for playing lead guitar. Single coils on a mahogany body sounded a little weak IMHO, but you still get that glassy tone from them.
This thing is built really well, and it's heavy as heck because of the mahogany body. Honestly, it didn't feel that much like a stratocaster. The inlays were really cool and I liked the tremolo bar which you can just push in rather than screw in. Very solid, although very heavy.
This honestly does feel like the money. It's solid, very well made, the humbucker sounds like a quality pickup and it's made out of mahogany and has deluxe features like the locking tuners, abalone dot inlays, and cool machined saddles.

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

OK, I have played Les Pauls all my life. I scored this near new and it has found a permanent place next to my Pauls. Maybe it's the mahogany body, maybe the HSS, whichever. But for sure this sounds better than all the other strats I've ever played. Go for it.

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

Great guitar. I've been playing since 1976 and always thought that the Fender sound was somehow "cheap". I must admit I've never owned a genuine Fender, BUT for 25 years I owned and played a solid wood Hondo II Professional, at least on par with the CBS Strats of the 70's. I love the Fender quack, but would always need to do the quick change w/ the h-b equipped 335 at my side. No longer. This guitar is a dream. It has everything (almost). If you are a punk/headbanger/metal guy this is not for you. Stick to your mahogany SG's. Don't be fooled by the description. This is a Fender American Deluxe HSS (has a DZ serial no.). The only diff. being the tex-mex (hot) pu's and a really cheap Chinese case. This is an awesome guitar, in an apparently limited edition (you can't find it on Fender's website).Don't hesitate - this is a great instrument.

Probably the best that Fender Guitars has to offer

By fenderaficionado

from Helsinki, FI

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

Well, what can I say? I've had this guitar for a day now. The first time I used this, was when I did a gig yesterday. I ordered it from this site a few weeks ago, and it arrived a few minutes before I got on stage. I took it out the cool Fender case and it was already in tune as well. Anyway, I have to say that this guitar is brilliant. The sound that this guitar gives you is absolutely stunning. The bridge setup is perfect. The locking tuners are great, overall the craftsmanship of this guitar is perfect. If you are going to get a Fender, well, I really suggest that you get this one. And a special thanx to this site for the speedy overseas shipping, and easy ordering system. :)

Fender American Special Mahogany HSS Stratocaster

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

Where to start? I received the Mahogany Stratocaster as a Christmas gift from my wife. This is the fifth Stratocaster she has given me. Yes I am spoiled, good woman huh! As I eagerly opened the case (Yes I am a little kid at heart) and unveiled this mahogany beauty my first impression was ?wow this finish and color remind me of an old band mates 78 SG?. I pulled it out of its case and performed a long and to my shear delight I could find not a single flaw. I plugged her in to my trusty old Marshall, began to warm up and immediately noticed its excellent action and playability. After a couple of minutes it occurred to me, this will be the first guitar I have owned that came set up fairly correctly. This is the first non triple single coil Strat I have owned. After a couple of weeks I am still discovering all of the tonal variations afforded by the double coil and S-1 switching. I did not think it possible but it happened, for the first time in many years, playing is again a pleasure and not a chore. I do feel a bit guilty though as I fear my other Strats will be mostly ignored, at least for the foreseeable future. My only complaint would be the cheap molded case. For all intents and purposes this is a Deluxe American series Strat. It should have come with the better molded case as did all of my other American Strats. My wife was very pleased with the ?buying experience? and thank you honey for number five.

Awesome Guitar

By rednaxelab

from Honolulu, HI

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

This is an absolutely beautiful guitar. I have owned it for about two years now and I am (obviously) happy that I purchased it when it was significantly lower than the current price. However, this gem is still worth the current $$. Fit and finish are top quality, the tremolo and tuners are wonderful - no Floyd rose to be sure - but plenty of space in both directions and it never goes out of tune. Additional upside: changing strings is the easiest task of any guitar I've ever owned. Could the pickups be higher quality... sure, but for the price Fender is not necessarily going to break the bank. Very versatile guitar, the HSS system allows for a wide range of tonal variety fitting any playing style. As far as weight goes, it is a heavy strat but compared to my Les Paul Studio (also mahogany) its a feather. I will eventually take it to a quality music shop and change the pickups - but only because I will continue to play this guitar until they drag me to the nursing home. I Never get tired of looking at this guitar, as I said... ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

A nice addition to your collection

By Dogstarr1

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

Okay, this is really a nice guitar, though in all honesty, it doesn't hold a candle to my 2004 FSR USA Strat that came with a factory Floyd Rose, or my 2008 Deluxe USA Ash Tele; both are comparable to the lower end Custom Shop instruments I've played. Still, with the S-1 switch you can find a lot of tones that aren't all Strat-like, it's sort of a Strat-SG. On the negative side, the edges of the frets on mine are a little on the sharp side compared to my other Fenders (I'll have that addressed at some point by a local shop, but I'm not into shredding, so it's sort of a minor issue for me). I bought it mostly as a back-up Strat for my '04 as the locking tuners are much quicker for string changes than on a Floyd. I also assume it will appreciate in value, being the only Mahogany Strat produced. Another point worth mentioning, the tone is very slightly darker than my other Strat, making it better to me for, well darker stuff, though for real metal/industrial, the Diamondback is perhaps a bit light, really voiced for classic rock and heavier blues. The neck seems to be a bit slimmer than on my other Strat, I prefer a beefier profile having super long fingers, but for most folks, thinner equals faster runs, so that's probably a plus.I don't think this should be your first Strat, I'd go with a USA Deluxe and if you're torn between a Tele and a Strat, I'd go for the USA Deluxe Ash Tele, as it's probably the most solidly built instrument in Fender's non-Custom Shop lineup, but if you already have a more traditional Strat and Tele, this is a really nice addition to your collection and it's a real looker. The value I rate at 4, reflects the new price and that it's just under the price of the USA Deluxe, which, I think, is your best choice in a USA Strat not built in the Custom Shop.

beautiful playing instrument

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

I am a life long Yamaha player. Handcrafted Yamaha's I thought what I would always play, this Fender changed all that. Out of the box it was beautiful to look at and attached it self to me instantly.I play regularly in a couple of bands and play worship music varying from simple three chord selections to hard rock. This guitar has all the tone I need and flexibility.I have been playing for about 35 years and I just found my favorite guitar last year. I tried several guitars, Gibson (several), PRS, Ibanez, Taylors. Nothing compares in feel and sound for my preferences and taste.

Love it!

By Jonlin94

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

I play in a cover band and need a guitar capable of playing different genres of music. This guitar fits the bill perfectly. Personally, I love Hendrix and SRV type music, and this axe does it with ease. I play it through a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier/Rectoverb and a 2x12 cab. Yes, SRV through a Mesa!! Sounds exceptional! I actually bought a Seymour Duncan Humbucker to replace the guitars bridge pick up, but I returned it. The humbucker in this guitar has good output, and is very clear, so the Duncan wasn't needed. Played through the Mesa, it has plenty of distortion for almost anything. We even cover a couple of Metalica tunes, and it does great!! I only gave it 4.5 ratings, because I have yet to find the absolute perfect guitar, but this one comes close!!

Immaculate

By RockAsFunk

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

American quality with all the bells and whistles. A smidge heavier than your average Strat, this guitar cuts through rich and deep. Originally I planned on swapping out the neck pickup, but after playing it with the originals for a while I've changed my mind. I feel as though this guitar gained value when I walked out the store with it (not that I would ever sell it). Definitely the best guitar that Fender makes today, and their 60 years of experience shines. This guitar is a piece of art in and of itself.

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

I really Love this guitar, Fender got it right this time!! It may not be the hotest as far as the pick-ups go but I would have to say that the combination of pickups and it's configuration is the most useful guitar in the line-up, THE mahogany body does just what you would expect it to- provides some really nice usable tone, the pickups provide the versitility you need when used with a class A amplifier-this thing comes alive-I play alot of slide and the humbucker provides some nice and much needed output, the single coils are very toneful without being harsh or treblie. The neck is just a little chunkier than an American Standard and a little less than an American Deluxe-very nice, very versitile, very comfortable. This is what I've been lookin for,Good Job Fender! NAILED IT!

Great Rockin' value

By Happystratcamper

from Central Texas

Comments about Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

I'm generally a Gibson guy, but this is my 4th (and favorite) Fender. The single pups have a great sound with very little 60 cycle hum. Equipped like a "Deluxe" for a great price because of the neck details, cosmetics, deluxe tuners, nut, etc. I confirm the general comments by others: beautiful finish; fast neck (thin, but not too thin); humbucker could be better (easy fix); case is ok for home, but too cheap for gigs. All in all a steal for the price.
