I have the Surf Green MN. The whole look and vibe is what attracted me, I thought it was a new Am Std because it says Made in USA and the Am Std string retainers on the head stock. There are 2 string retainers. I buy these retainers special for my blacktops, MIM and squire strats I have or work on. The LARGE head stock looks very cool on stage and next to my other strats in the rack.

I think this is a smoking deal. If you're looking at American Standard strats then stop here add the tweed case at 119 and you're still below the cost of a new american standard. There is also one other MIA value priced strat worth looking at, the nitro satin series strat.

The electronics sound good, the texas specials are very good for everything. New innovative wiring so the neck and bridge pu have the tone pots(I heard it, didn't believe it, looked and what a good idea). I wish FMIC would start wiring for 7 ways providing a button/switch/pull to turn on the bridge while the switch is on the neck providing N+B also allowing N+M+B at same time, almost first mod on every strat I have. I would also like a button/switch/pull to have switch position 2 and 4 to have a series option for 9 total pu options for a 5 way switch and 2 push/pull pots.

I did make all those wiring option changes in a mint green pick guard. The aged white they used looks good, but a mint green pick guard makes this axe pop. I also used Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups in it. A surf in the neck and middle. A Texas hot in the bridge. I also swapped out the bent steel saddles for Gotoh block saddles. I just like block saddles better. so now mine is mine and it sounds as good or better than the standard texas specials. so i guess i'll put that populated pick guard in a squire or MIM strat...

finish on the guitar is excellent. the neck plays very well and i pretty much love this one like the 2 other strats I have a CA red HH blacktop and a vintage tb mn '91 am std.

it would be easier if it came with a hard shell case and for this guitar, you're going to want one.

this is a very good value considering the price creep I've observed on FMIC products in general but especially the MIA guitars, an am std went from 1k to 1.25k this past year.

Fender should be ashamed. This has the potential to be a very good guitar. Unfortunately, I apparently got a lemon. The workmanship on this guitar was atrocious. The nut was cut poorly, fret buzz, volume knob bottoming out on the pickguard, string tree (only one) slightly crooked, really bad overall. The frets were what shocked me the most. It was like they were corroded or the fret wire had been sitting in the back up the shop for a couple years and they threw them on anyway. I was just disgusted that they would put out product like this especially since I loved the size and feel of the neck along with the sound. I have a number of Strats, 3 Mexican, 1 Squier SE, 1 Squier Classic Vibe, 1 American Standard and the only guitar that has worse workmanship than the "Special" is the Squire SE. The Classic Vibe was built better than the Special!

I'm at the point where I don't even know if I can buy Fender products anymore. There are so many better guitars for less money and Fender just seems to not care.

If you find a good one, buy it if you must, however I would recommend checking out a G&L Legacy or S-500 before you do. G&L blows Fender away in price and construction.

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This is a great Strat. Don't compare it directly against an American Standard strat as it has a slightly different feel and it sounds slightly different due to the Texas Special pick ups which still have the strat sound but are much fatter and have a bit more mid range and grunt to them. Qualitywise, its on par with the standard with excellent workmanship. This strat has jumbo frets which something you may or may not like so its worth trying it out first to see if its for you or if you can adjust to them. I am not a fan of jumbo frets but I adjusted to them easily. It is cheaper than a American standard but bear in mind that it does not come with a hard case like a standard does, and the supplied gig bag is adequate but nothing special, so factor in the cost of a case if you are taking a guitar of this calibre out and about or in your car to gigs or rehearsals. I hate gig bags anyway, but that is just me. Personally I prefer my Am Standard Strat as I like the sound of the fat 50s pick ups much better than Texas Special pick ups, and think the fat 50's are the best strat pick ups fender have ever made, but sound and tone is a personal thing. texas Specisl have their own sound going on and it is a good sound, with lots of power and kick to them. On this Am special the satin fingerboard makes for a very nice fast feel and the vintage trem is solid and stable. All in all, its a beautiful pro standard well made gigging workhorse of a guitar which you cant go wrong with. And it has the classic strat look too with the big headstock. I cant see anyone being disappointed by this guitar, Fender have delivered a great guitar at a great price point here with some stunning finishes too..

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I have been out of the play for pay business for 10 years and wanted a Strat that felt like the old ones without all the "improvements" made over the years, some good and some not so much for my taste. This is an American Strat (in a color I really wanted). I had to spend some time getting it set up like I want and I will upgrade some hardware, mostly for function rather than form but I enjoy playing around with it and feel comfortable doing so where I might not with a $2000 instrument. I originally planned on changing the pickups to Lollars but the Tx. Specials sound fine and get the tones I want so that may never happen. I changed the pick guard to white pearl like I do every Fender I ever buy - (strictly ego driven aesthetics :) And I will probably will add locking tuners eventually and may consider a more stable bridge and tremolo system in time. For now though it quacks and screams and has all the touch and dynamics of a Strat and I am very happy with the purchase. Top that off with excellent service from MF and it hard to imagine feeling better about this purchase.

I bought this guitar in Candy Apple Red as an open box item for eight hundred beans. The guitar is in perfect condition which is all that mattered to me. I love the satin finish on the back of the neck along with the jumbo frets.

After reading all the good reviews about how great this guitar is out of the box, I'm very disappointed how mine arrived. Plays good but sometimes has a loud hum and squeal through my amp (none of my other guitars have done this with this amp). Guitar was over an octave flat on tuning out of the box. Hard to tune and noticed once in tune bridge is sitting very high off the body. Inspectors signatures in at least two places. What a joke. Already going in the shop for warranty work on first day it arrived. Thanks Fender

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Well, a whole, big bunch of you guys and gals are going to be genuinely unhappy with me in a minute, and I understand because I'd be upset too, except for the fact that it was my great fortune! So basically, I won the lottery on this Candy Apple Red American Special Strat. I just happened to walk into a local First Cash Pawn back in January, and saw this beauty behind the counter. I knew it was going to be out of my price range, but I had to play it. Well, I played it and immediately fell in love. The finish on the guitar is wonderful, and I don't understand the bad comments I've seen about it's quality, because this thing is perfect, and practically plays itself. Out of my 9 guitars, this one pretty much just leaps into my hands when i want to play. They also had an American Standard Strat that was nowhere near the quality of the American Special. I'd probably like the pickups better on the Standard, but I'm okay with the Texas Specials. With the decision obvious at this point (the Special was 10X the guitar that the Standard was), I finally checked pricing on the two. They were asking over eight hundred for the Standard, but as a regular customer, they would have let me have it for eight even, which would have been alright if the guitar was better. Then I checked the Special, which I was already in love with and was plotting and planning just how I was going to acquire it. The price tag was less than I expected, and basically so low I just about fell over. Then, I read a store sign that had January as musical instrumenr clearance month, and all music equipment and instruments were 30% off the sticker price. So I ended up getting this glorious guitar, this absolutely amazing, best guitar I've ever owned (it was also my first American Fender!!) for a grand total of three hundred and thirty something!! I nearly messed my drawers I was so utterly stoked about this. It went on layaway that day, because i knew it'd be gone by closing time if I didn't.

Iv been a guitar player for 48 years and have always been a Gibson diehard ! But the last band I was in played a lot of older stuff and I had a Aria strat copy I used instead of my Gibson Explorer because it has such a deep heavy metal sound and I started to like the sound of a strat even though it was a copy it was a high end Aria guitar. So I ordered me one of these Fenders and now im hooked I love this awesome guitar from the cool color surf green to the awesome sound and quality craftsmanship and it plays better than my Gibson ! So if your thinking about getting one go for it its well worth the money ,take it from a some one that has had a guitar in his hands every day for 48 years !! ROCK ON .

Comments about Fender American Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

The finish and build quality are excellent. Intonation was spot-on out of the box, and the set-up was very close as well. The fret work appears to be good. There is only the slightest sharpness to the feel at the fret ends, but hardly worth a mention - it's pretty good. I will ultimately file the string slots in the nut slightly lower - that would be my only real criticism, and to be fair, I've had to make that adjustment on most every guitar I've had.

I'm still becoming accustomed to working with this thing - I've been awhile without a Strat, so a bit tough to make a solid comparison between the standard pickups and these as my recollection is probably fickle and I'm primarily using a Tele as of late. So far, I'm liking what I hear. I do think the pickups will benefit from a slightly heavier string than what was shipped on the guitar, and while the pickups don't seem as full and lush as I recall at lower volumes, they do seem to begin to fill out once you add a bit of volume - again, I think a slightly heavier string will help here - just haven't gotten around to making the swap yet....

I'm having a lot of fun with this thing - if you're looking for an American made Strat at a very good price point, I don't think you could go wrong here.
