Fender rolls out the American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar that delivers a healthy combination of modern and traditional tones at a price that won't drain your wallet. But don't let the stripped-down price fool you into thinking it's a stripped-down guitar.

This Tele is a great instrument from the Fender "Special" line. Mine is a 2012 model (according to serial number). Five yrs ago, I had a bad experience with a Hwy One Strat (another Special line) and did not like the satin nitro finish (thin and easy to mar), the 'one way' truss rod (put 10's on and you're going to have a neck bow to some degree) and the middle pickup was always on and switch gave a bad static 'pop' when switching from position 1 to 2. They must've listened to the PEOPLE this time for real. THIS new "Special" model is just that. Special! I never used to like triple saddle teles because they were never set up well and had all sorts of buzz or the action was too high, etc.. This guitar was set up from the factory right and has renewed my confidence in this type of 'vintage bridge'..They even used real brass for better tone. The attention to detail on this guitar is fantastic for it's price range. I appreciate the high gloss finish, the well manicure nut (no buzz!), stable tuners (tighten the buttons some and it'll be even better), the fairly light weight body (weighed in just about 8lbs or slightly under), neck and body are well balanced..The 25 1/2 inch scale and big 22 jumbo frets give great intonation, even on this so called 'twangy' guitar. It has just the right amount of twang without sacrificing intonation, which I'm very fussy about. I play clean..all the time.. I really know a guitar is great if it holds it's resonance against me while playing ..unplugged, acoustically. I do that with my G&L USA Strat, and I can do that with THIS Tele. Beautiful resonance...that lasts! Once new strings settle, it holds it's intonation very well. This guitar is a pleasure to practice on quietly without plugging in. It has a nice 'acoustic' sound. Pinch harmonics sound great and have a lovely Tele 'whine' (even unplugged). Frets were smooth on edges, too. I polished mine with 0000 steel wool and they're super smooth and 'slides' are fast and every note rings clear up the fretboard. Personally, I may modify electronics, but not because they are 'bad', but only because I'm curious what a different pickup configuration will offer in tone (500k pots, mini hum, orange drop capacitors, etc). I won't comment on the Greasebucket tone circuit, because I simply don't have enough info or experience with it. Great thing about vintage white color is you can get a custom pickquard of ANY type and it'll look fantasmo! All in all a great guitar for the money, I suppose asking for a hardshell case is asking too much, but I picked this one up local and didn't have to worry about shipping it in a GIG bag. If I did buy from MF, I would *invest* in a hardshell case if I could. It's definately worth protecting the investment. Buy with confidence. I am not a Fender or MF employee, btw. Just a woman who's been playing for 31 yrs, gone through 37 guitars in 25 yrs and knows what's good. :)

Tried this model out at a large guitar store recently (along with its Strat "brother"). I own a couple very nice Fender guitars, btw. I have to say that, while the tone in the pickups (Texas Specials, prob. MIM though) is very good, the overall package is underwhelming for me. I somehow get the sense that Fender is realizing how good their Highway One guitars are, so maybe now they are cheaping out on these new entry-level American models to save them some money at a similar price point. The wood & hardware on this and on the strat is definitely lesser than the H1 or the other American models I've handled. Incidentally, the H1 is the baddest telecaster Fender makes imo, so you better grab one while you still can.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

All I expected. Classic Fender tone in an American classic Tele. Being a loyal Gibson player for many years I just wanted a little variety in tone that Fender offers. I was a bit apprehensive about the Texas Special pickups but not to worry. The Fender tone is built in.
The guitar build has no flaws, the electronics are smooth and solid, love the maple neck and the feel while playing. The classic blond finish is beautiful.
I had to do some minor tweaks to the neck, bridge and intonation, but that is to be expected in coming to this dry climate.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar because an American Special Telecaster is a great price for getting an American Telecaster. I was a little nervous on the Texas Special pickups, but after playing this guitar for about an hour I fell in love with them. They have a really nice bright sound that goes nicely with overdrive and reverb. I have played several American Telecasters and this is probably my favorite. It has such a nice neck and quality finish to it. I was also a little weary of the Jumbo Frets at first, but after going to a slightly heavier string I love them too. If you have never played on jumbo frets before (as I hadn't) it is extremely easy to bend strings (which is great in its own right). If you are playing a lot of chords or harmonies on your lower strings you can get a touch sharp/flat if you don't watch how hard your pressing (again this can be desired by some) I went up to a slightly heavier string and can't tell the difference now except that the frets are extremely easier in my opinion to press down. BUY THIS GUITAR NOW.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar for the neck and it is beautiful. Jumbo frets play like butter, the right width, plenty of room for finger style. Some folks don't like the old style brass barrel saddles but the intonation is fine. I like that they finished the fretboard satin. I like everything about this guitar except the gaudy 70's decal. I prefer the regular decal they use on the American standard. Workmanship is excellent.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:

Alright, I spent quite a bit of time searching for a guitar that my daughter could utilize for learning and playing. I also wanted it to be a guitar worth owning for a lifetime. I ultimately, after looking at similarly priced guitars from other manufacturers, chose the American Special Telecaster. The ease of playing on a maple neck with jumbo frets was important. Also, the time tested electronics and build quality was a big selling point. The tone created by the Texas Special pickups is exactly what you would expect from a quality Telecaster. The finish is great, and the playability out of the box was very good. I am satisfied that my daughter will have a great guitar that she can play for many years to come. Bottom line, its a great guitar, made in the USA, at a great price.

Great guitar for the price. I am an avid collector, and this guitar ranks right up with the best of my collection. The neck feels great in my hand, is a comfortable weight, and from the little time I had her plugged in, she has good tone. I wish that it came with a case, or if they had the option to swap gig bag out for a HSC, but I guess thats one of the ways Fender keeps the price down, will be buying a case later on to protect my new baby!

Texas Special Bridge seems to me too abrupt sometimes, even considering that it's a Tele. However, the guitar is great.

Comments about Fender American Special Telecaster Electric Guitar:
