I love the guitar…but it did have a defect (and the replacement is in the mail).

What folks are saying about the comfort and playability of the rounded neck/fret board design is true…it's perfect. I actually took the chance and just ordered the Mystic Blue one without playing it first in a store…very happy and love every aspect of the guitar.

However, this particular guitar was found to have a defect. After about three days of playing, I thought I noticed a "bump" on the back of the neck with my thumb. Sure enough, there is some kind of defect with the dark wood inlay over the truss-rod. At the head-stock end of the rounded wood insert piece, there is an imperfection/crack?/imperfection in grain/router nick or something causing there to NOT be a seamless transition between the pieces of wood. There is flawless/undetectable transition everywhere else along the "stripe", but this part, now that I know it's there, feels like a speed bump.

I called Musician's friend and they immediately told me a replacement will ship out and I just have to pack up the first guitar in the packaging of the new guitar and drop it off at UPS…no cost to me other than the trip to UPS. Things happen and I'm not unhappy so far…I'm sure going to look over this new guitar extra close though since I have seen other reviews where people said they also initially received defective ones. I'm including a picture.

Additionally, the listing says the guitar comes with an SKB case…they no longer do and I was told by the customer service rep they need to update the website (and I noticed the catalog says SKB case too). As of writing this review, the website still says the SKB case is included…not the biggest deal, sense it does come with a nice-enough hard-shell wood/vinyl case, however, I was a little disappointed.

Over-all, as long as this next guitar is flawless, I'm happy. Musician's friend has always done me right and worked with me. Buy it if you want a Strat…I'm hoping to have this one for life!

I've been considering buying one of these for years. Finally broke down and ordered one from MF. First of all, I had them do a price match with the smile on the box people. Saved a couple hundred, but they sent me a used guitar. I didn't get a used guitar price on it, so that wasn't cool. When I first opened it up the case was very nice and high quality. When I first saw the guitar it was beautiful. I love the Sienna Sunburst finish. It seemed to be very well made and surprisingly light. I don't like the fact that I ordered a maple neck/fret board and they put a finish on the fret side. Why would they do that? The best guitar I've ever played has a solid maple neck/fret board and it is completely unfinished other than oiled. I did not like the way your hand kinda sticks to it. The tone of this guitar is good. Very bright and bluesy with good cleans through mild crunch. But that's about all it's good for. Anything over mild gain and it just doesn't sound good. That is through a good tube amp too. The main problem I have with this guitar is that no matter what I do, it just won't stay in tune. Very subtle vibrato on the tremo, and you have to stop and retune. That drives me nuts and shouldn't be an issue on a guitar that costs, well, you know what they charge for one of these. Personally, I don't see what is so great about a Strat. I've played more versatile, better guitars for half the price. If you mainly play blues or country, this is a great guitar for you, as long as you don't touch the tremolo bar. I'm sending this one back.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

I tried the new Deluxe Strats and literally hated the tone that the N3 pickups give out. Plus I don't care for all the little extras offered in the Deluxe model so I sent it back and am very happy with the American Standard model. The custom shop Fat 50's pickups sound so much better than the N3. For cleans the Fat 50's are not as bright and organic as the vintage sounding '54 pickups but a VERY close second. For use with overdrive, I prefer the Fat 50's for their smoothness and silence.

I'm very happy with this purchase. It just worries me a little that the tremolo feels cross threaded (I tried with different Fender trem arms). Hopefully this is an issue that will self-repair. It does seem easier to screw the arm in lately. Because of this and the stripped tone knob that had to be replaced I am giving the guitar a 4 out of 5. Otherwise, it is excellent in every way.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

I've been a Stratocaster owner and player for over 30 years! This guitar arrived via UPS in a timely manner undamaged. According to the serial number, this guitar is a year 2013 model. I always expect that a guitar should be setup properly and ready to go right out of the box, and the setup of this guitar was good out of the box, even though I still performed my own set up to meet my comfort level of playing. I received the Olympic White model with the maple fret board model and I love it! I happen to own a few USA Fender Stratocasters dating from 1975 through 2013 including this recent acquisition and some of the specs have changed over the years within the USA Standard models. What really stands out on this current generation of Stratocasters is the Custom Shop Fat 50 pickups. The Fat 50's are very good pickups. Due to the fact that I play multiple styles of music from Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rock and R&B, the Fat 50 pickups have good presence in the mid and high tonal ranges, which allows me to stay on the top of the mix for solos and allows good presence and resolution for rhythm guitar playing while playing a supportive role in the band when I need to stay within the mix. Being that I love to play jazz, I found that the Custom Shop Fat 50 pickups give decent roll off of the highs with the tone select switch in the neck position to give me the warmer jazz tones that I like. I would prefer even a greater degree of roll off of the highs as these pickups have quite a bit of brightness, particularly with the maple fret board, but the tone is good enough for me to get the job done. The Pro Series hard shell case that comes with the guitar, is not as good of quality as the Fender cases that were made in the 60's 70's 80's or 90's, but I do like the fact that case is a tradition style Fender case in comparison to the over sized SKB that was included in the previous USA Standard model. Overall, I feel that this is a great guitar and I prefer the overall sound on this current model compared to the standard pickups in the previous Standard model that date around the years 2005 through 2010. Again....I love it! Great guitar!

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

The built quality of this guitar is top-notch. It feels great in the hand. The sound is even better.

My only problem is the fretboard. There is so much gloss on the fretboard that it makes doing a full bend very difficult. Perhaps using .10+ stings would help. I use .09s, so touching the fretboard is simply going to happen.

The gloss fretboard was the only problem in terms of the guitar (personal preference). I don't know why they don't offer satin boards ;/

The other problem was due to UPS. UPS shipped my goods (guitar and blackstar ht-60 amp) with water-logged boxes. It looks like it was sitting in a pool of water for hours. There was even mud inside the box and on the product. I know this has nothing to do with the guitar itself, but it was part of the reason I returned it.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

First off let me just say Musician's Friend had great customer service throughout this whole thing...Fender quality control should be ashamed. Some of the pieces of wood they attempted to use in conjunction with the Sienna Sunburst finish were appalling. I'm talking multiple knots on the front grain of the wood. If you're someone who likes that sort of thing then great but in my mind if I'm paying over 1000 for a guitar with a semi-transparent finish I expect them to use a decent piece of wood to accommodate a finish such as this. It took three tries (all of which MF footed the shipping bills for) until I finally received a guitar with no knots on any portion of the body.

In terms of playing the guitar is awesome minus some slight fret buzz which was corrected with my initial setup.

I highly suggest doing this one in person if you have a chance to. I'm really not picky in terms of only accepting some awesome looking wood grain, I just don't like knots. Had there been a MF close I would have went that route and I would highly suggest you do the same if you are going for a sunburst finish.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

This guitar carries the Fender name and tradition, and it certainly isn't cheap. It's the 5th Fender guitar I've bought (Mustang, Tele, 2 Strats, Squire Bass). For a guitar of this reputation and price, I expected a near-perfect product. Instead, the set-up was way off, the finish had flaws, and the frets needed filing. Also, the case is scuffed. I will be hesitant to mail-order a guitar again.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

This is a great guitar! The custom shop pickpups really deliver, and I can't believe the range of tones I am getting out of this. I used to be a Les Paul player, but after having played this Strat, I don't even bother getting my Les Pauls out of the case anymore. The neck feels great, and weight is perfect. The only negatives that I can find are the setup and the fretboard finish. The setup needed some work, but that is normal. The gloss finish on the fretboard is too thick for my tastes. It looks like somebody sneezed on my fretboard, but that is an aesthetic fault only, since the fretboard feels great.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

          Sienna Sunburst?

I love this guitar, and have no regrets yet. However I give it 4 stars to help those considering buying to also consider this. I received my first SS finished Strat and sent it back. Played nice, and this is strictly cosmetic, but it had an ugly knot on the face, right underneath the bridge. All my guitar buddies agreed, "This should have been sprayed an opaque color, not transparent."

Second one to arrive was better, but the matching of body is kind of apparent, luckily on side with pickguard and input jack, limiting exposure. Whatever, it's fine. I've seen better, but perhaps that's where the higher price tag comes in.

Guitar plays so well. You know it's American, and I really enjoy the neck, feel, and it's very very very fun to play. 9.5" radius neck is nice, and I've come from LPs and Shred strats with flatter necks. Great feel, smooth, and love the satin finish on the back. Not sure yet about the high gloss fretboard (maple) but so far so good. Guiar plays "like a Cadillac"...

However, the two I've rec'd don't really look it. So just a heads up. You might consider upgrading to the Deluxe Strat if you're looking for "pretty" as I assume the nicer woods go that way at the factory. It's not to say mine isn't pretty, but if you're going to pay the premium price over the Alder bodied American Standard, just a heads up. The two I rec'd certainly did not have the nice contrast grainy finish the one in picture does. Perhaps other customers got luckier? I know it may seem silly, but something I wanted to mention. So I'd say more like 4.5 stars.

The hard shell case is very nice. Looks and feels like high quality. Stands up width wise (handle facing ceiling) with confidence. Not wobbly or uneven. Two nice sized storage compartments flank the neck pocket of case. Included accessories are nice too. My only recommended initial upgrade would be Strap Locks.

Musician's Friend has been nothing but THE BEST in all of this. No questions asked, I shipped back on Dec. 28th from UPS store, they took first guitar back, had the second one delivered Jan. 2nd, no delay from Holidays or weather, and I was very surprised and pleased at the speed they resolved this. 100% A++++ on the customer service. I will definitely continue to shop here.

Comments about Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

I have been playing guitar for over 34 years. I mainly play Gibson's but I have to have at least one good Stratocaster. Over the years I have owned several 1970's Stratocaster's, several 1980's Stratocaster's, and several 1962 AVRI's Stratocaster's. I finally found an outstanding '62 AVRI Stratocaster in 1989. It was owned by a Luthier from West Chester Music in Pennsylvania. It sounds great, plays great, looks great, and most importantly it is set-up properly. It stays in tune even with heavy whammy bar use. Definitely a one in a million guitar. Now, I have been keeping my eye on Fender Stratocaster's over the last 10 years. I finally tried out and fell in love with the new design 2012 American Standard Stratocaster. I bought the Olympic White with Maple Fretboard. I must say that with the new Custom Shop Pickup's, new switching circuit with the pickup bypass notch on the bottom tone control, that this is the BEST modern Stratocaster Fender has made to date. I can honestly say this new version is a "10" all the way around. I'm glad I waited for the new model and highly recommend one to any guitarist who wants a really good Stratocaster but just isn't sure which one to purchase. The other thing is that Fender Customer Support is OUTSTANDING!! They are easy to reach and truly care about your satisfaction with their products.
