OVERVIEW

The amazing Tele gets an even more comfortable body and improved electronics.

From the garage to the club to the stadium, the American Standard Telecaster is the same great best-selling go-to guitar it always has been, and now it's upgraded with a comfortable new body contour and classic-sounding Fender Custom Shop Twisted Tele (neck) and Broadcaster (bridge) pickups. The latest incarnation of a truly timeless classic, it rings more fully, brightly and crisply than ever.

The look, sound and vibe of the Telecaster resonates throughout the history of popular music. From orchestra pits to mosh pits, small clubs to stadiums and garages to recording studios, its signature sound is everywhere. The American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard has hand-rolled fingerboard edges, Custom Shop pickups, staggered tuning machines, improved bridge with bent steel saddles mounted to a stamped-brass bridge plate for increased resonance and sustain, tinted neck, high-gloss maple fingerboard, satin-finished neck back, thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance, and Fender Tolex case.

I've been playing a 2011 natural fender telecaster for a year now so here is what I honestly think about these new Fender teles:

The good:

The Neck:

Absolutely amazing. I picked out the best tele I could find within my budget when I went to the store and this was something I really needed, a good neck that feels good the play on with frets that don't buzz. The neck and tuners provided seem to be top notch.

The body:

When I first started playing teles I noticed they sounded "thin" until I tried one made of Ash and suddenly the tone became a lot fatter. Make sure you get one of the transluscent/parent finishes like sunburst or natural. I recommend natural because they seem to give pretty good cuts of wood so the guitar looks absolutely beautiful natural with a black pickguard. The sound difference between an ash and non ash tele is quite noticeable, but I can tell you would have to be insane to call one of these ash teles "thin" sounding. The tele body itself is really great to play on if you are a les paul player but want something a bit lighter and with single coils. The tele body seems to give you more sustain and an overall better sound than a strat body because there is more wood on the body since there is no comfortability cuts. So the instrument is less comfortable to play than a strat but it has more sustain because of the body.

Electronics / pickups:

First the electronics are perfectly placed on a telecaster so you hand won't ever hit them by accident. I find that happens to me sometimes playing a strat and using a tele has really remedied that problem. Using the volume and tone knobs will make a significant difference on this guitar and they should be used often since sometimes the treble can be too much with a tele.

The pickups are quite good. The neck pickup sounds just like a strat neck pickup. But the bridge pickup, this bridge pickup, is why you should get a tele. This thing is an absolute monster and i've played everything from clean country to borderline metal tones on this pickup (only reason I say borderline is because modern metal has some seriously insane tones with the advent of active pickups). The sound of the bridge pickup alone is enough to get this guitar, if everything else about it was bad I still would have gotten it because of this thing.

The Bad:

- String Ferrules can easily fall out and get lost while restringning. You can replace them with countersunk ones to avoid this from happening but apparently they make you lose a bit of tone so I put up with the stock ferrules.
- The neck block (where the neck meets the body) can get in the way, but I put up with it because it improves sustain.

The bridge:

The bridge they give you on these new teles is not good. When you first play it at the store you won't notice the flaws because of how great the rest of the instrument is. But these bridges don't belong on telecasters. These are 6 saddle poorly designed strat style bridges that can easily break your strings. While the bridge intonates well, the problem is that the strings are allowed to slide freely around the tiny little bridge saddles. Occasionally what happens when you play is the string can slip over the screw that keeps the saddle elevated then snap because of the sharp edge of the screw. To get around this you have to keep all your saddles low enough so the screws stick out up higher than the strings. Doing this will probably mess up your action, so I'm just getting a new bridge at this point. Apparently 3 saddle bridges improve sustain and you can get compensated saddles from companies like Glendale so it can still intonate like a 6 saddle. I don't understand why fender doesn't just put 3 saddle bridges with compensated saddles on these new teles, apparently a significant amount of the tele's signature sound comes from this style of bridge.

The fit and finish on mine (3 tone sunburst) was wonderful. The pickups are insanely great. I'd highly recommend them. This is probably the best SOUNDING guitar I've ever played. Unfortunately, the action/setup from the factory was on the poor side. I had a luthier look at it and he couldn't get the action to play comfortably without fret buzz around the tenth to twelfth fret (which drove me banana sandwich), so unfortunately, I had to return it. I'm a tele-addict, so I'm sure I'll try again at some point.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

I wanted to wait a few months prior to writing my review. This was a MF replacement for a Fender/Roland G5 I had to return. I bought the guitar as an open box but honestly, I'm sure it was NOS because it was virtually unplayed in the original packaging but a 2013 model. There was a bit of fret buzz at first but I took it in and they got the buzz out, so now it plays great. Just a little buzz on the D string around the 15 - 17th fret but in my experience and even with my own Fenders, maybe 1 out of 20 Fenders don't have any buzz at all no matter how well you set it up so this is quite acceptable.

Feel - The guitar feels and weighs perfectly. Mine was an alder body so a little bit lighter but its the sound I was going for anyway. The back of the neck is satin and the fret side is glossy so I did like that. I am hoping the gloss prolongs the life and looks of the natural maple and the satin allows my hand to slide freely.

Electronics - The pickups sound great and the electronics are solid. The neck pickup does sound like a strat and compared to all my other guitars, the bridge does have a bit of a twang to it. However, when the guy who set up my guitar said these new hybrid teles aren't really teles, I was curious so I had him play mine and his so I could "hear" the difference and indeed there was not as much twang. But to me who never owned a Tele, it has just enough twang not to be too harsh and can be a bit more versatile. I "might" change out the pickups but honestly, with my expensive guitars I have always left them stock.

Looks - The guitar looks great, I got the black one which will eventually show signs of scratches but it is well built and looks great.

This is a great guitar for the price. Its weird to me when people always say you can buy this guitar and that and put the same pickups or better in and it will be better than a Fender or a Gibson, but honestly, it isn't the same. If it's a Fender or a Gibson you want, I always say just get it.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

My brand-new red Tele arrived in perfect condition, set up and ready to play right out of the box. Nice black case too.

I would have never bought one except for the fact I fell on the neck of my old one and busted up the headstock pretty good. Soo... I had a bit of money lying around so I thought I'd see what Fender has been up to the last 50 years. I was tempted to by a cheaper model, but, the caveat "you get what you pay for" is always a loud voice in my head.

I love the finish on the blonde neck.. soft as satin on the back. I forgot what it's like to play with actual working frets.. feels nice and is easier to get around on the neck. Pickups sound great and aren't a bit noisy. The guitar cord socket is quite stiff, perhaps that'll keep me from pulling out the plug on gigs. The intonation was dead on from the factory. I haven't played live yet so I'm not sure if this guitar has the same country twang as my old one.. we'll see. So far in practice it sounds great.
The one downside to me is the weight. This guitar is about 8.5lb, where my old one is 6.5. That's a big difference. I bought a new wide strap to help with that. There's a bit of string buzz on the open D, but I suppose all Teles have a bit of that. I'm not concerned.

Fender has done an amazing job on this model. The fit and finish are beautiful and I just love looking at it! I think my audiences will like it too.

In very little time, I had the guitar dialed in. I love the fact that the set up was nicely done. The fit and finish is beautiful, and am very satisfied with my purchase.

The maple neck is smooth as butter, and the frets were dressed right from the factory.

My sales associate was Mckenzie. She was paitent, and very helpful in making my first time experience with Musicians Friend a great one.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

I use to not like Telecasters. I now play a lot more blues and traditional sounding music and this guitar fits those sounds quite good. This guitar plays very well. Makes sounds that the Strat or Les Paul can't quite achieve. Easy access to frets in the second octave. Neck is fast. Run it through a Fender tube amp and you have a sound that is unique and oh so classic. It has quickly become a new favorite of mine. I have the Jade Pearl Metallic color. See my photo.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Maple Fingerboard:

Love this guitar, absolutely love it. If you get a Tele you have to get the maple neck, everything feels so much better on the maple. The two tone sunburst looks beautiful too. But I originally got this guitar to start recording myself, looking for a nice clean sounding guitar with great tone. Could not have found a better guitar. Yes the action is a touch too low, sometimes when I'll be playing (on the lower frets really), you'll get some fret buzz, but it really isn't that bad. That is the only flaw that I see with this guitar, and it isn;t really that big of a deal. This guitar is a great piece of work, I picked up mine used and I still cannot get over how well it plays. Simply an amazing guitar,
