OVERVIEW

The best of yesterday and today in one amazing Tele.

From the garage to the club to the stadium, the American Standard Telecaster is the same great best-selling go-to guitar it always has been, and now it's upgraded with a comfortable new body contour and classic-sounding Fender Custom Shop Twisted Tele (neck) and Broadcaster (bridge) pickups. The latest incarnation of a truly timeless classic, it rings more fully, brightly and crisply than ever.

The look, sound and vibe of the Telecaster resonates throughout the history of popular music. From orchestra pits to mosh pits, small clubs to stadiums and garages to recording studios, its signature sound is everywhere. The American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard has hand-rolled fingerboard edges, Custom Shop pickups, staggered tuning machines, improved bridge with bent steel saddles mounted to a stamped-brass bridge plate for increased resonance and sustain, tinted neck, high-gloss maple fingerboard, satin-finished neck back, thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance, and Fender Tolex case.

The new pickup combination produces a wide range of tones, from bell like cleans to classic Tele twang. The Delta tone pot bypasses the tone cap delivering unfiltered sound from the pups to the amp. The satin finished neck and the rolled fingerboard edges make for smooth and effortless moves up and down the scale. Hardware and electronics look and work well, though the tuners feel a little rough. I'll see how they are after the first string change.

This is a beautifully finished instrument; three piece ash body with a transparent red (crimson) dye and a nitrocellulose gloss lacquer top coat; rosewood fingerboard on maple neck. Personally - I hear NO difference in tone between the maple and rosewood fingerboards- so for me it came down to pure aesthetics. This new Tele has the body contour cut out similar to the Strat and the Tele Deluxe - I think it's a good improvement.

Out of the box I had to raise the action on the bass side to eliminate some minor fret buzz.

I also have a '78 classic Blonde/maple, and while the old one gets some "vintage" points, this 2012 is so much better. It's a joy to play, hear, and see. I've traded out several other Tele's too - this one is definitely a keeper.

I bought this through local shop. Had to exchange the sunburst/rosewood due to a permanent forward bow in the neck (from factory..w/ 9's!). I've had bad experiences with rosewood fretboards in the last few years on different guitars. Starting to wonder about the density or quality of rosewood on guitars. On this particular guitar, there was an extremely tight truss rod that couldn't adjust the forward bow properly, even after 4 attempts by 'stronger' arms. :/ Other than that, the guitar sounded and felt great. I was sad to have to send it back, but I did. I got one with a maple neck and the truss rod turned smoother and like butter. :) "Bad apple" neck, I guess. My customer service experience with Fender (directly) was fantastic. Very helpful and fast resolution. No complaints. Both guitars sounded/sounds great. the replacement had an ash body (crimson). The black pick guard had a very slight, barely noticeable warp on the top side. Also, there was some static pop on the pick guard. I intend to switch it anyway and shield it better. The neck pickup sounds great, esp clean. Nice for jazz or anything really. Very versatile sounding in every position. Guitar weighs in at 7.5 lbs. The guitar is not too neck heavy. Good balance. The body appears to be a 2 pc, joined at centre, but Fender can and does use up to 3 pc bodies depending, even on US standard models. The sunburst was 2 pc joined offset. They save a lot of money and waste less wood that way. Still sounds good and resonates nicely. The nut on either guitar was cut well. 6th string slot was for .046 so if you play 9's, you might get some buzz. Stamped saddles are actually nice on the Tele. I might still switch for solid steel, tho, for a more even, less twangy tone. Edges of fretboard and frets were smooth. Great guitar. Case latches felt a little cheap. They don't 'click' solidly or feel totally secure. The deluxe case has better latches. I might get it replaced.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard:

More than 30 years ago I was taking guitar lessons in a small NJ town. I used to wait in the local music store for my mother to pick me up from my lesson, and while I was waiting I would look at the Tele that they had hanging near the door. I'd daydream about plunking down a pile of my paper route money in order to have it. I never did commit to the many months of saving and I grew up without the pale yellow Tele, and in fact, did not play guitar for years and years after becoming interested in many other things. My admiration for the guitar never waned though, and when I resumed my interest in playing guitar I FINALLY GOT IT. Candy Cola, with rosewood...and it is beautiful. Very nicely made and the pickups sound gorgeous. I like the neck pickup with the tone rolled off a bit into my Vox, pretty clean. If you are thinking about getting it and you have enough of your paper route nickels saved up, I doubt you will be disappointed when you finally get your Tele.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard:

I've owned a number of Tele's over the years.
These retain all of the ingrediants that make Tele's great plus a just a few very special tweaks that take the guitar to the point of perfection. In my opinion and for my needs the current American Standard Tele is the ultimate incarnation of the breed -and- I always get excellent service from Musicians Friend! And I'm very very picky and not always the easiest customer to deal with....but if there is something wrong - they (MF) always make it right.....
PS ..I never do reviews but I've been doing good buiz with these folks for so many years and this particular fender is such a great instrument - And DEAL- That I felt i should finally leave some long overdue feedback.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard:

I am disappointed with the bridge. I was expecting the smooth bridge that was on my 1989 Tele American Standard Deluxe that did not scratch my hand, but the bridge on the new Tele is not the same. How can I get the smooth bridge like the old guitar. I play with my hand resting on the bridge and the new one is irritating.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard:

I got the 3 Tone Sunburst. The setup was good out of the box with .09's, sounds very good on all pickup positions. I'm amazed at the variety of tones this guitar will put out, I had always thought the tele's only had one slightly variable tone, not so! The go-to twang of the bridge pickup with all treble is unmistakable. The neck pickup with a darkened tone setting is also nice for rhythm playing. Great with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Excelsior amps. The contoured back is comfortable, I like it. Fit and finish are all good.

Let's put it this way, if I would have bought this guitar first, I would own only one instead of six. It's that nice.

I bought this as an open box item. As such I didn't expect perfection. Surprisingly, the esthetics were about perfect. The set up, however, was awful. As if no one actually looked at the guitar after it came back. Slight neck bow as well. These problems were easily fixed and it was still a good deal. But it was all kind of a PITA. I expect to have to tinker with guitars when I order them mail order however I do expect them to be playable out of the box.

Comments about Fender American Standard Telecaster Electric Guitar with Rosewood Fingerboard:

This guitar was a "Blemished" guitar from Musicians Friend and I was hesitant to purchase sight unseen. I read about people's experiences on several forums regarding buying blemished guitars from MF and they were all positive so I decided to go for it. Let me just say I will not hesitate to do this again!

The guitar was perfect. Flawless. Like any guitar you purchase from a factory, it did need a set-up in order for it to play like it should. If your not very experienced with guitars, you likely wouldn't even recognize this.

I have several very high end guitars, one being a Suhr Custom Modern built to my specs, so I know when a guitar plays and sounds good or not.

This Tele is awesome! It plays and sounds so sweet. I wish I hadn't waited so long before getting one.

The pickups sound better than I thought they would. You can get the single coil Tele twang out of it all the way to a very humbucker like rock/metal tone. It will really do it all. The neck pickup is very capable of achieving that Strat neck tone. The mid position can achieve a great balance that gets you into Strat bridge territory if that's what you want. Very versatile.

The neck feels fantastic too. I do prefer Jumbo frets but the Medium-Jumbo's will do just fine.

If you're looking for a great, versatile, well made guitar, this is it.
If you're considering a "blem" but have concerns... just do it!
