Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

Even though I'm more of a Gibson guy than a Fender guy, I must say that this guitar came as advertised, and I was extremely pleased, and impressed. After having problems with MULTIPLE Gibsons that I ordered, which surprised and disappointed me considering how much I love my Les Pauls, I ordered this one for my girlfriend, and first one came perfect. No need for sending back, returns, or exchanges. Must be better Quality Control at Fender these days. Only thing I'm considering doing is swapping out the vintage 3 Saddle bridge for the 6 saddle (which was conveniently included) since I'm having slight intonation problems.

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

I've really wanted one since I was 17. I probably would have been happy with the MIM model, but the wife got me the US one for my birthday. It was a bit more two years ago, though. The black one I got looks sharp. The tone is fantastic, but I'm not sure that alone justifies the extra dough. I'm used to larger frets, so I have to really think about it when I switch guitars. A bit tougher to make my bends and rolls sound consistent. It's not a good candidate for the heavier strings I've grown accustomed to, either. I like the idea of the micro-tilt adjustment, but haven't seen the need to play around with it, as of yet. It's really a niche guitar and I'm reluctant to do any mods to it considering the price. Again, it has the hands-down best tone I've heard from any guitar I've owned. If it's the first one I pick up at the beginning of a practice/jam/recording session, I can work up to making it sound fantastic. It just takes a lighter touch. I really want to get the Custom Deluxe '72 with the dual humbuckers and fat headstock. If this one is any indication of what I can expect, I can't really justify the American made and will probably buy the MIM. Don't tell my wife. I love this guitar just for the fact she bought it for me out of love.

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

Let me start with the negative... The first AVRI 72 Custom I received had a nasty blem, a bad ground (hum when not touching strings) and the neck was not aligned correctly (the high e string was almost off the fret board by the 19th fret). None were major issues alone, but given all three were on my new guitar, MF suggested I send it back. There's my bad experience... And kudos to MF for the customer experience. They overnighted me a new Tele after getting the first one back.

Now, for the good! The second one I received was absolutely flawless. Perfect set up, gorgeous finish and great feel. This guitar reminds me of the amazing feel I get from the 52 RI. It just feels great. I even like the 7.25" radius on the neck and I'm a string bender.

Tone - perfect! I love this Wide Range Humbucker. It has a great fat tone, but is laid back and pairs really nice with the bridge. This guitar is a versatile tone machine. I just love it.

It comes in a nice black G&G tolex case with the usual goodies. I am very happy with my decision to purchase it.

I primarily bought this guitar to match the tone of Keith Richards open G tuning Rolling Stones sound. It certainly does the job!!! I believe the action may be a little to low, but minus that this guitar pulls out some great Fender tone'age!!! This is a MUST have Tele in anyone's collection!

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

A beautiful, well-built guitar. I couldn't bond with the vintage-style frets. The 7 1/4" fretboard radius didn't bother me like I thought it might. The pickups were just plain uninspiring, unfortunately.
It's a reissue model... You get what you were looking for.
Seemed very solid. It's was a really nice-looking guitar, too.
Not sure why it should command that much more than a USA standard tele.

From the decade of brown, beige and orange

                  By Aaron-f1G1k

                  from Phoenix

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

This is a very nice guitar. The quality is top-notch; the overall fit-and-finish is excellent. The solid ash body is finished in a beautiful, very thin nitro. I have the sunburst, and the grain of the wood shows through very nicely. To my eye, it's just about the coolest looking guitar ever. Some people complain that the pick guard takes up too much room, but that's part of the charm. The 70s was the decade of wide ties, brown, beige and orange, and cars that came from the factory with flaming eagles and cobras on the hood. This Telecaster captures the "style" of that era perfectly.

As for the most important part - how it plays - I'm using a Les Paul Traditional and an American Special Telecaster for comparison. The reissue humbucker is not the same as the original, but it does sound good once you spend some time with it. At first I thought it sounded muddy, but within a few hours I was able to get a great tone and I don't think I will need to modify the guitar. You can get a great Wes Montogomery tone on the humbucker, and then switch to the bridge for a perfect Andy Summers "Roxanne" tone. Although similar in construction to a Gibson humbucker, when overdriven the Fender pickup sounds "creamier" than the Les Paul Traditional's 57 Classic. The humbucker sounds way better than the neck position Texas Special does when overdriven, but the Texas Special has a nicer, "classic Telecaster" clean tone. The vintage bridge pickup is not as hot as the Texas Special on the American Special Telecaster, but it has more grit, snarl and is more articulate. It sounds great. In the middle position, you can get loads of different tones by experimenting with the separate volume and tone controls.

The period-correct 7.25" radius neck is different than the Mexican version of this guitar. It demands more from you, but I like the feel. When I switch back to the Les Paul or American Special, string bending is a breeze - even with 11s. I like how the 7.25" neck fights back a bit; I think it will improve my playing.

The only thing to indicate that it's an American Vintage is the "V" serial number on the neck plate. There are no "Made in USA" or other markings anywhere else on the guitar.

For a reissue, the humbucker should be closer to the original, but aside from that historical inaccuracy, this is a very good guitar. The only reason I didn't give it a higher score for value is because the Mexican version of this guitar is also very good, but it's not as nice.

American Vintage '72 Tele Custom is awesome! A diverse tone machine

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

This reissue is by far better than the orignal models in the 70s that were heavy and lacked a nitro finish. The three bolt neck is fine and secure. The nitro finish lets it breathe for that all out tone. I usually upgrade electronics and sometime sthe pickups on my guitars but this is one of the few that I played right out of the box and plan no upgrades. It is merely perfect as is, which says alot. I highly recommend it as I own one now.
Get alot of tone combinations with the two volumes and tones. Good tone caps and electronics, no upgrades needed. The entire axe breathes with the beautiful nitro finish.
I have owned various American Fenders and numerous Custom Shop guitars. The quality on this model is unsurpassed with a great attention to detail.
A great value for an American made classic that is actually better than the original vintage models.

Comments about Fender American Vintage '72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar:

This is a really great tone machine with high levels of quality, a great paintjob that breathes, nice weight ash body, and tone from all directions. Very nice to be able to back off the treble a little bit on the bridge pickup and still have control of the neck tone settings! Check out the Fender Vision Jimmy Vivino demo of this axe, this really helped with my decision! He is correct, this is one instance where the reissue is truly better than the vintage one. I recommend this one.
Very versitale tele with the indivdiual tone and volumes. Also the humbucker!
The quality is perfect. I play alot of Custom Shop Fenders and this one I put right up there! They did it right with this one, the attention to detail is fantastic. Tone is great!
Great value for a American Vintage issue with Nitro and quality woods! The electronics even have the good caps that the Custom Shop uses!
