OVERVIEW

A modern take on a classic.

The Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special is an electric guitar that updates Fender's iconic Jaguar guitar with some thoroughly modern improvements: hotter pickups, a redesigned Adjusto-Matic bridge with floating tremolo tailpiece, a 9-1/2" fingerboard radius and a redesigned neck pocket with increased back-angle for improved stability and sustain. The Jaguar guitar's tremolo plate has been moved closer to the bridge to increase break angle and sustain. The Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special guitar has a screw-in tremolo arm that increases stability and control when executing dive-bombs.

The Jaguar Classic Player is an excellent guitar for surf music. I've played the CIJ and an original early '60's model as well. I find no significant difference in my sound or performance abilities on any of these three variations. Yes, the Classic Player has a fixed Tune-O-Matic (TOM) bridge with fixed saddles which theoretically is not the best idea when diving the whammy bar. I therefore put on a TOM with roller saddles. A TOM bridge made for the large posts found online for about 20 clams fits perfectly. Yes, the Classic Player has higher output pickups than an original Jag but, with the guitar hooked up to a tank and Showman, I still hear the fundamental Jag surftone loud and clear. The alternate electronics work just as they have on earlier Jags. The closer placement of the tailpiece to the bridge doesn't seem to affect the sustain much which I'm happy about as the Jag is s'pose to have limited sustain. The increased angle of the strings at the bridge does reduce the slipping of strings from the bridge saddles during bends but not entirely. Anyways, slap some heavy flatwounds on this Jag and you've got a Jag every bit as good for surf music as earlier models and you'll have saved enough to purchase the required '63 reverb tank.

The saddle screws were loose in the slots and rattled. You could turn them with your finger. They only stopped rattling if you tightened them all the way, which ruins your intonation. My new guitar also came with a severely scratched up pickguard. It looked like a rough-cut piece of lumber. Pieces of plastic were sticking out from the screws, like parts weren't unwrapped all the way and shavings weren't removed after drilling holes. Bad craftsmanship overall for the price tag. I returned it.

Comments about Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special Electric Guitar:

I've had a longer battle than most with finding my sound. I went from a Strat, to a Jackson Rhoades, to an Epi Les Paul, to a Mustang, to a Gibson LP Studio, and nothing had that it factor for me, until I got this bad boy. In a weird way, it has everything I loved about those other guitars, with none of the issues. Very stable tremolo, great fat tone that can get pretty nasally when I want it to, and a neck that feels like it's made of silk. I've finally found my sound, and I'm now a proud owner of a Jaguar.

Comments about Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special Electric Guitar:

Got this guitar today, and I was impressed with the look, feel, finish and most of all the playability right out of the box! I mean this sounded really good with just a minor tuning really. I have not swapped out the strings for Elixer 9's which I most always use. I have two strats, I have owned a tele custom, and I own a 73 Les Paul custom. But this one plays maybe better than the strats and feels as good to me as the Les Paul. If you don't like slim fast necks, then this is not for you. It is so easy to play. I always wanted one of these jags, sure glad I got this one, great value for your buck. I love this guitar! hats off to MF for quick shipping and sturdy packing.

ive always wanted a jag and saw my beautiful sunburst at the local shop and just had to have it. i even did something kinda dumb to obtain it... i traded my rickenbacker dakota for it that i loved dearly but was wearing old on me and i was ready for a change. after plugging it in i had to have it. made in usa for made in mex... yeah i did that and i dont regret it for a single second but i do miss my old ric but thats ok just more reason to get another eventually.

Comments about Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special Electric Guitar:

I love this guitar! I was influenced by the reviews here for the various types of Jaguars and this one seemed to be mostly positive with folks. I'm glad I chose this one. There were some complaints about a small neck. It is a bit more narrow than my Strat but I have a rather small hand so it's fine for me. I recently recorded with it and the sound is very sweet. I love all the variations I can easily get. As a side note, it was accidentally delivered to the wrong address around Christmas time. Luckily the neighbor brought it over to me a few days later. In the meantime Musician's Friend was extremely helpful to send me a replacement. They also made it easy for me to return the replacement after that neighbor brought the original to me. Nice customer service! Every thing turned out well in the end and I now have a really nice Jag.

Comments about Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special Electric Guitar:

This is an excellent instrument! I set it up to my personal taste and threw on some thicker strings and it's now my main guitar. I can use it for nearly any situation and I can draw nearly any sound I need out of it. I use the low cut switch for thin, nasally, twangy, slightly overdriven tones or as a means to tame a real squirrely fuzz. From my experience, most people ignore the jazz position but I love it for mixing up tones and colours throughout a song when playing live. The neck is incredibly comfortable as well as the weight and balance of the body. The pickups, while not the absolute best out there, sound great and do their job well. The bridge pickup, especially, has lots of great sounds in it. I like the bridge very much but being a tune o matic you don't get as clear and distinct notes when playing behind the bridge, but you can still pull out some interesting sounds when boosting your guitar signal. The Vibrato sounds great and works well without detuning the guitar as long as it's set up properly. My only complaint about the guitar is the finish, which is really heavy, but that's really a small price to pay for such a great instrument.

This was a nice looking and pretty good sounding guitar.
I did not realize the shorter neck scale meant the frets would be smaller. It felt odd to play. I am a big guy and the guitar just felt tiny to me. I was not feeling it so I set up a return. Musicians Friend customer service was great. I was careful while trying it out and packed it up carefully. The return went smoothly. I did have to pay to ship it back but I am happy to not get stuck with a guitar better suited for a skinny emo guy or a girl.

I also own a 50th Anniversary Jaguar that costs twice as much and is a little prettier (B&B neck with an engraved neckplate) but as far as fit, finish, and performance there is very little difference. The tune-a-matic type bridge on the Classic Player is much less worrisome than the standard Jaguar bridge and this guitar is capable of the beautiful and widely variable tones typical of most Jaguars. The scale length is very comfortable with my hand size. Highly recommended especially considering the price difference with the American made. This is my first Mexican-made Fender guitar and am very impressed so far.
