Comments about Fender Custom Shop NAMM Custom Built '55 Journeyman Relic Telecaster Electric Guitar, Maple:

In early 1993, I was a young man with a wife looking for a way to pay the down payment on my house. My 1965 Telecaster was among my most valued things. With a heavy heart and a vow to someday look for something to replace it when financial stability was achieved, I sold it for 9 C-notes . Now, 24 years later I have found a way to fill the hole in my heart. NAMM Built 55 Telecaster relic. Same color, ( I purchased the Blonde with Maple neck) same wear on the neck. The finish is almost spot on. The 65 had a refinish job and a hole under the pick guard where a Humbucker had been installed at some point in time so there were some issues with the electronics. The 65 had a very thin C shaped neck. The '55 has a U neck. I was a bit worried that I would hate it because I remember the 65 being very fast and comfy to play. I love the "baseball bat" neck. It actually makes it very easy to finger pick, unlike a thinner neck. Still fast and smooth. SO.. why a relic'ed guitar? Why not buy a super clean shiny guitar and earn that wear and tear? First of all it is replacing something that looks almost exactly like it. Secondly, people loved to decorate their guitars. Colors, shapes, pick guards.. etc. Look at Waylon Jennings Telecaster. That's not how it came off the showroom. The mild relic wear on this guitar soothes that pang of regret for selling my 65. It plays amazing and sounds fantastic. That grease bucket circuit is sweet. I will be needing to put some Elixir 10s on it. The 9s are just a bit too spongy. Big shout out to the reserve guitar dept and Mike for all of his help.
