Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Left-Handed Electric Guitar:
A previous comment stated that the vibrato bar would "fall out" if you leaned forward. There is a set screw on the bottom of the tailpiece, right below where you insert the bar. I'm sure (haven't checked) Fender provides an allen wrench to tighten this screw after inserting the vibrato bar. Insert bar, tighten screw, and the vibrato bar will not fall out.
Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Left-Handed Electric Guitar:
The tones are very vintage and warm and heavy. Great sustain, fast neck, easy to play. A great guitar.
I am used to playing a Tele and this neck is fast. It sounds warm, thick, and fat. I probably would not have bought it, had I known it had a shorter neck due to my reluctance to stray from the standard, but I'm glad I did. It makes a huge difference in solo speed, it's easier to hold onto, and it makes bar chords easier to grab. It's like cheating, but it sounds great.
It sounded good out of the box.
I didn't and haven't taken it to get set up or looked at for any reason. This axe is solid and holds the tune well.
I don't see why this guitar would depreciate over 20 years so thumbs up, could have used a case though.
Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Left-Handed Electric Guitar:
Pricing issue aside it is a great guitar. The only minor flaw (loose tremelo arm) is far outweight by the upgrades done to this incarnation of Mustang (new bridge & bridge pickup). In the end it keeps what makes a Mustang a Mustang and builds on it. The sound and feel really make it all worth it.
Whatever your feelings are regarding Cobain, this guitar is a versitile, fun, and comfortable ride. I waited for at least a week of ownership before writing so I could get some of the stars out of my eyes and put it through some real playing.
Bottom line a beautiful vinatge look with endless sonic posibilities. Its 2 thumbs up!
Pros: First and foremost it's a LEFTY!
24" scale has great feel, bends are a breeze. Vintage radius neck (its a preference thing). In/out phase options give some unique sounds. Duncan JB pickup in bridge is great sounding Hot humbucker, single coil in neck adds versatility allowing you to cover a lot of bases with one guitar. Clean sounds on the bridge can be a little bit of a challenge if you don't roll off a little on the vol.
The Gibson style bridge is an much appreciated upgrade from the old mustang/jazzmaster style bridge. Anyone who has played one of the old ones will back me up on this.
Cons: The Tremolo / on this is very cool looking but not practical for heavy dive bomb use, wich is expected on this model. The real flaw is the arm is so loose it will literally fall out if you lean forward or move around too much. A little bit of tape around the base of the arm prior to insertion is a quick invisible fix. I tend to leave it out entirely. Overall it works well when setup right.
More of a quirk than a flaw is the way the pickup switching is done. Two low profile on/off/phase switches above respective pickups, makes changes mid song a little challenging, but again this is a Mustang and thats how its done.
Quality wise the pictures don't do it justice, I went with the Sonic Blue. The poly finish, vintage tint neck, smooth fretwork, all that chrome! A solid well crafted piece of equipment that will last a long time. Other than normal wear and tear, I don't forsee future issues other than routine maintenance, string and eventual spring changes etc. The action was really good right out of the box! Minor adjustment needed on intonation was to be expected it has been shipped from halfway around the world (Japan).
The loose tremolo arm is only real defect but it's a recreation of a low cost 60's design so I guess it's vintagae correct?
I own many Fenders and Leo's simple design philosophy means they last forever! I expect the same of this one.
The price is really my biggest point of contention. This price for what is really a supped up version of a beginner guitar from the 60's. Insult to injury, no case or bag? Really! I guess the pickup upgrade and Cobain's name are adding to the cost of what is really in the same vain as Fender's Pawn shop mustang (not available left handed). for 200 less. That aside I still bought it, not a lot of options out there for us southpaws.
Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Left-Handed Electric Guitar:
AWESOME I LOVE IT.
FOR THE PRICE FENDER IS BASICALLY JUST LETTING THE LEFTIES GET A CRACK AT OWNING A MUSTANG RELATIVELY CHEAP WHEN COMPARED TO BUYING THE ONLY OTHER LEFT HANDED OPTION FOR THE MUSTANG, WHICH IS ORDERING A MUSTANG DIRECT FROM FENDER JAPAN, OR EBAY. THOSE ALL GO FOR AT LEAST $1500.
THIS IS A MIJ (MADE IN JAPAN) MUSTANG, IT COMES SET-UP VERY NICELY, AT LEAST MINE DID. PLAYS NICELY, A BIT STIFF, BUT VERY FUN TO PLAY ONCE YOU BANG AWAY AT IT FOR A FEW HOURS. HIT SOME CHORDS AND SINGLE NOTES ALL OVER THE NECK AND SHE FITS YOU VERY NICELY.
THE ACTION WAS NOT TOO LOW NOT TOO HIGH, BUT JUST RIGHT, THAT GOOD OL' MUSTANG 24 1/2 INCH SCALE FEELS SO NICE AND PETITE, THIS IS A GUITAR THAT FEELS LIKE IT WANTS TO BE DOMINATED. NOT TOO MENTION IT'S SO PRETTY IN FIESTA RED.
THE PICKUPS ARE =OBVIOUSLY= GEARED RIGHT TOWARDS NIRVANA TONES, YOU'LL BE PLAYING "RAPE ME" OR "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" IN A HEART BEAT IF YOU KNOW HOW. THIS IS ALSO AN AWESOME SLEEPER BLUES GUITAR...ALREADY PERFECT FOR EXPERIMENTAL TYPE MUSIC WITH THE ON/OFF/PHASE SWITCHING. 70'S ROCK IS NOTHING FOR THIS GUITAR...
THE IVE ALWAYS LOVED THE DYNAMIC VIBRATO ON THESE THINGS, OF COURSE USING THE SUPPLIED TREMOLO BAR IT WILL GO ALMOST IMMDIATELY OUT OF TUNE. WASN'T A GOOD DESIGN BY FENDER REALLY, BUT USING YOUR PALM TO MOVE THE THICK CIRCULAR TAILPIECE WILL CONJURE SOME NICE VIBRATO SOUNDS FROM THAT PLUCKY AND TWANGY BRIDGE.
IM PRETTY SURE THE STRINGS ARE 10'S, AND THIS THING ROARS..
I GAVE IT AN EIGHT BECAUSE I FEEL IT COULD'VE COME WITH A CASE AND ALL THAT GOOD NIRVANA STUFF THAT THE SIGNATURE JAGUAR COMES WITH.
ALSO IT'S LAME THEY WAITED SO LONG AND THEN MADE IT A SIGNATURE GUITAR.
WHY COULD'NT THEY MAKE A LEFTY VERSION MUSTANG AND JAGUAR ALL THIS TIME??
AND WHY NOT FOR A REASONABLE PRICE?
AH WELL, MAYBE NEXT THEY'LL PUT OUT THE JAG-STANG (CROSSES FINGERS)
I SUSPECT THIS IS ONE OF THOSE GUITARS YOU KEEP FOREVER, THEN GIVE TO YOUR KIDS....
COULD'VE INCLUDED A CASE A MEMORABILIA
Comments about Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang Left-Handed Electric Guitar:
We left-handed guitar players who are of a diminutive stature owe a debt of gratitude to Kurt Cobain.
If it wasn't for his clout, Fender may have never made these 24" scale electrics available for those of us
who are sinister by birth. I can play with much more ease and comfort on this smaller scale guitar than I ever could on a 25.5" scale guitar. We lefties are still reaping the benefits of Nirvanas success twenty years later.
If you are a smaller person looking for a quality left-handed Fender guitar THIS MAY BE YOUR ONLY OPPORTUNITY FOR MANY YEARS! CARPE DIEM!!! Buy one (or a few) now while you can!
Its a Mustang... its a Jagstang. Wait... its BOTH! I've got one of the elusive left-handed Jagstangs made
in 1995-96 (they only made leftys 1 year) and my new Lake Placid Blue Kurt Cobain Signature (ironically...no Kurt Cobain signature on it) Mustang sounds just like it. Its got a few cool features over a regular Mustang... the Duncan humbucker in the bridge, the racing stripe which allows me to play faster (hey, its a RACING STRIPE), a tune-o-matic style bridge instead of the clunky floating type found on both regular Mustangs and Jagstangs, and my favorite surprise feature... "trimmed" pick-up switches! The usual Mustang switches stick out about 1/4" from the pickguard which can interfere with playing. These
switches are more slider-like than switch-like... making them much less of a nuisance. Shweet!
I'm hopeful that the alder body on this Mustang is a little less susceptible to dents and dings than the basswood 95-96 Mustangs and Jagstangs. Those guitars would ding if you just looked at 'em wrong. Also, the wammy bar included has a black grip on it which I prefer to the white ones on the old 95-96s.
High quality Fender Japan manufacturing with quality components, even though historically Mustangs were "student model" guitars. A Jagstang has more mass, but this modded Mustang has better sustain due to the upgraded bridge and higher quality humbucker. The paint job on this thing is great... its got a subtle dark sparkle to it, and with the white moto pickguard it looks dang classy.
Rather hard to say considering I bought a regular lefty Mustang new in 1996, and way back then they
cost about half of what these do. The value is in that they are LEFT-HANDED
24" scale brand new Fenders now widely available. If you wanted a lefty Mustang before these came out you had to buy from Japan at inflated prices or buy used at rediculously high prices.
