OVERVIEW

Modern playing comfort and Custom Shop pickups to celebrate the Strat's 60th birthday.

To honor the 60th anniversary of the Stratocaster in 2014, the venerable American Standard Stratocaster now comes in a new limited edition model featuring Fenders innovative channel-bound compound-radius fingerboard and the time-honored look of a Sonic Blue gloss finish.

The fingerboard is inlaid into the neck in a design with an elegant appearance and a distinctive fretting-hand feel in which both edges are comfortably rounded, with no side seam between neck and fingerboard. Further, the fingerboards 9.5-14 compound radius graduates smoothly from a more rounded profile at the nut (great for chording) to a more flattened profile near the body (great for soloing).

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Channel Bound American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This is your basic American std strat with one big exception -- the 'channel bound' neck brought down from the Select line. The rosewood fingerboard is inlaid, so the maple wraps up and around it like a binding. It's pretty subtle but I really like the look, and the workmanship on mine is superb...the inlay is perfect with no hint of a seam where maple and rosewood meet. Also, the neck is compound radius, so you get a slightly flatter board as you go up the frets. I would not normally choose the sonic blue color but with the neck it's quite attractive...you could easily give it an edgier look with a black pick guard. Mine plays great and the Fat 50s do their thing. My only con would be just a bit of buzz due to low factory setup but otherwise all good on the QC front. MF gave me a nice deal and shipment was very fast. I know Fender pumps out 'limited editions' like mad but this is one I'm glad I grabbed.

Comments about Fender Limited Edition Channel Bound American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This guitar's fit, feel and function are all top notch. The sonic blue is a subtle color, one I like very much. There was not a scratch or blemish on the guitar body itself. The neck is a thin contour and feels really nice to play. The channel bound binding is perfect without a trace of a seam or join. The specs say it is a "hand rubbed oil" neck finish, but it really feels unfinished. If I could change anything about this guitar it would be to have a more gloss like clear coat on the neck. Basically what they have on the headstock should be on all of the neck.

The pickups are top of the line. I also have a '95 MIM strat and although it plays and feels almost identical to this '14 American, the Custom Shop pickups blow anything else away! It has all the classic Fender sound, while the MIM pickups sound flat and lifeless.

The hardshell case is the cheapest part of this package. Maybe it is just new and needs to be broken in, but the locking latches feel cheap, and seem to catch on themselves instead of opening easily and smoothly. The guitar fits perfectly snug, however, and the double compartments have ample room for storage. The neck is held securely and the headstock is lifted above the floor of the case to protect it against bumps.

All things considered, this is a great guitar and an awesome value.
