OVERVIEW

The return of a fabled and seldom-heard Fender name from the 1960s.

The Fender Modern Player Stratocaster HSS—throughout its history, Fender® has always made a special point of welcoming new players to the family by offering entry-level instruments of remarkable style and substance (such as the Duo-Sonic™, Mustang® and Musicmaster® models), with great sound, classic looks, solid performance and eminent affordability. The Modern Player series continues that great my-first-Fender tradition, with thoroughly modern features and several distinctively unconventional new takes on our most revered instruments-all with outstandingly attainable value.

The Modern Player Stratocaster® HSS offers the tonal versatility of two Modern Player single-coil pickups and a full-throated Modern Player humbucking pickup at the bridge, with the addition of the second tone knob serving as a push-pull coil-split switch for the bridge pickup. Other features include an alder body, C-shaped maple neck, rosewood fretboard with 9.5” radius and 22 jumbo frets, five-way pickup switching, three-ply pickguard, vintage-style synchronized tremolo bridge, vintage-style tuners and nickel/chrome hardware.

Buy this guitar if:your are looking to upgrade a well constructed guitar made from good quality woods..want a good quality guitar to play in the basement with your buddies.Don't buy this guitar if:you play metal and need to gig before swapping Pups, pots...
I like the push/pull split-coil. feature and HSS configuration. Also, 22 frets on a non-USA strat is a plus. The latter is one reason I stayed away from the MIM Strats. Vintage style tuners, vintage style tremolo, Alder body, Maple neck, Rosewood fretboard, nut is synthetic bone. 9.5" fingerboard radius.
I bought this guitar with the understanding that the electronics and hardware might be sub-par. My intent was to upgrade the humbucker with a Pearly Gates and swap out the single coils, as well as the caps/pots. While I think they sound pretty good, especially the single coils I am going through with the upgrade. The humbucker has pretty good definition but lacks the punch I like in a 'bucker. The split coil is a tad thin but it is certainly functional enough. Nice glassy strat tones from the single coils. The pickguard was the most disappointing thing about the guitar. Very cheap and has the feel of soft rubber. I compared it to my Epi LesPaul Custom ( yes, it is a Silverburst, too) and Fender obviously cut a corner here. The Vintage Tuners did their job and the Rosewood finger board is fast and smooth as butter. Frets are smooth and seated properly. The body is Alder not that softwood junk (Agathis) you find on Squires. The Maple neck was smooth and straight. Exceptional fit and finish. I got exactly what I hoped for...an inexpensive but well-made guitar that can be something special after a few upgrades. Vintage style tremolo seems like the one you might find in a MIM. I actually might keep it. Don't let the "Made in China" throw you. My MIC Epi Les Paul compares well to my Gibson Black Beauty in build quality. Besides, where do you think your iPhone was made? MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE STRINGS BEFORE PLAYING. I put 009 Boomers and it made a HUGE improvement over the Fender strings.
Even with the stock electronics you cannot beat this guitar for the money. Built at least as well, if not better than the MIM, although I think the MIM has superior electronics and pickguard. I have 4 kids and can't just drop 1000-2000 bucks on a new guitar anymore, so I like to find inexpensive but well made ones to upgrade over time. That is what this guitar is. Word of the wise to you single guys. Get your expensive gear before your married and have kids

Packaged very well.Paint job was flawless.Got the white one.Weight was excellent.Vintage tuning gears nice.Tremelo was good aswell. Now for the bad.Input jack nut had to be tightened,no big deal.Setup was needed, once again not a big deal.Major problem was the fret job.Over rounded edges, too flat.Couldn't feel them. Not alot of sustain.I wanted to keep this guitar. So try one out thouroughly for yourself before you buy, like you should with any instrument.I'll send this one back and look again in future. For the price you should take a look. The exchange policy was EASY.So don'y be afraid to try it out.Nice guitar.Mine just wasn't.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

Great Strat. It looked as if it just came off the assembly line with some saw dust and debri included with the packaging. However, after cleaning it up an removing the plastic pick guard cover I found the HHS to be quite a gem. With a little TLC and tweaking this will be a go to guitar for just about any type of music one can pick.

I traded up from a similar priced Ibanes, and this guitar was way better. I have read similar reviews on fender guitars and they said that the pickups were too weak, but for me the pickups were perfect ! Tone from this guitar is clean and clear even with heavy distortion on the bridge p/u. Have not played small venues yet which I plan to do ( family and friends), but this guitar should work well ! Even the wang bar works well w/o going out of tune too fast to boot !

Comments about Fender Modern Player Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

So I was looking for an HSS strat with rosewood to add to my collection. Looked at the deluxe, MIA std and MIM. Then I ran across this gem. First thoughts were "MIC?? It's got to be aweful". Then started reading reviews on this guitar. Needless to say that I decided to try it out. Recieved it in about 3 days and haven't put it down since. As most all guitars it needed a little set up and I changed the strings out for a set of nickle bullet 10s. I have found that the fit, finish, action, frets, electronics and overall feel of the guitar is superb. My only ding would be the tuners, but not a deal breaker. I am shocked by the level of quality of this MIC strat as opposed to it's MIA and MIM counterparts. Definately a gig worthy machine.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar:

My wife bought me this as a surprise, she said she liked the color (Silverburst)....Out of the box it was set up well and almost in tune. I love Strats and own 25 or so and lots of other various guitars so I have plenty to compare it to. I always look things over in detail so my impressions are as follows:

Finish is well applied. The only area of concern was the tapering of the arm contour, it could have blended in better but not a big deal for most people I would guess. Bridge is solid and has a full size block although made of zinc MIM style. Neck to body joint is nice and tight. Fret ends a little sharp...I filed the ends, not a big deal. I like the vintage Fender logo and the vintage tuners, classy. Neck has a glossy back and rosewood fret-board, I like it a lot. I did a light fret leveling, it would have worked with a medium low action but I like mine perfect. As far as the electronics.....the pickups are alnico, on my meter the neck and middle pickups are around 6K and the bridge 8.4K and 4.2K when split. The neck and middle have a modern stagger which works well with the 9.5 radius. The switch is solid. The pots are dime sized but work fine. Jack seems OK. The guitar sounds very good, it has a vintage sparkle until you switch to the bridge you get a vintage humbucker sound. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the split sound of the humbucker was weak. I tweaked that by adding a 2.2K resistor the coil split to let part of the other coil through which helped immensely.....now I can get a tele type sound by rolling the tone back and the volume drop when split is much better. If they had these in a few other colors that would help sell a lot more of these. In short the guitar is a good value for the money and should play well with a basic set-up. I didn't find a need to replace anything, everything is of acceptable quality. As with any guitar you should figure in the cost of a set-up....unless you can do it yourself.....
