This guitar has a Napoleon complex - despite its diminutive physical size, it is a relentless tyrant of sound! The Mustang Special is a superb choice for anyone of smaller stature or smaller hands; I would think it would make an ideal guitar for a foxy lady. It resolves several things left to be desired about the standard mustang, and offers a delicious variety of distinct tones. Its a real beauty and has superb craftsmanship and quality all around. My friends and I all agree it is the best guitar any of us have ever played.
The Mustang Special has the coolest tone selection system of any guitar Ive ever known of. You can select any combination of the four coils, forward or aft, in either single coil mode or humbucker mode, and combine any coil with any other coil(s) from the other pickup, or isolate any individual coil, and let me tell you they all sound amazing and clean, so many sonic options available here! Although I count only 15 tonal options, not 18 like Fender says*. To explain its switches: The lower-horn 3-way Gibson-style toggle switch is a pickup selector; up=neck, middle=both, down=bridge. Then, the two upper-horn 3-way switches allow you to select forward or aft coils, or humbucker mode, by putting the selector switch in the middle position. Finally there are the master volume and tone knobs at bottom.

Thats 15, not 18. Sorry Fender, back to math class with you!
At only 6 lbs., hours of playing the Mustang Special do not lead to fatigue. Body shape is exceptionally comfortable standing up or sitting down. Comfortable and fast neck that is straight as an arrow. String-through-body just rocks, great sustain. Pickups are hot - real screamers with distortion. Action is perfect; intonation was easy to set up. This Mustang has a smaller butt than other Mustangs, since they replaced the infamously troublesome Mustang bridge/tremolo system with a solid hard tail bridge good move. I dont want a whammy bar anyway because I always whack my hand on them. The vintage style tuners are smooth as butter, you can tell they are top quality. I saw someone say the Duo-Sonic has better tuners, not true these are definitely superior. A lesser-known great feature is on the headstock, the ends of the strings go down into little holes in the tuning machines, so poking your fingers on the ends of the stings will never happen, such a great feature!
Bottom line - this is in my opinion the best Mustang ever made. In my opinion its a way better guitar than the standard mustangs that cost more. I got a great deal on mine from Musicians Friend. My only complaint is Fender needs to use more robust packaging when shipping their guitars, it came in a gig bag inside a cardboard box with very little internal bracing or padding, and could have easily been damaged during shipping. I bought a Fender 12-string from MF once that ended up with a damaged headstock because of poor packaging. But my Squier Duo-Sonic had awesome packaging, so theres no excuse Fender protect ALL your guitars properly!

So far I'm having a bunch of fun playing this guitar. The features that has drawn me to this guitar is the Mustang Shape (albeit modified shape)," the 24"" scale", the hard tail, and the wide range humbuckers.
The weight and balance of this guitar are perfect. The color is a little darker in-person than on the website and it looks good. The mint pickguard looks very nice against the blue finish.
While the Mustang purists might not like the hard tail," I love it. I block my strats so I don't need a whammy.
The 24"" scale works for me since I'm a small woman with abnormally short pinkies. Bar chords are a breeze. It takes a minute to get use to the 24"" scale when going back and forth between the other more popular scales (24.75"" and 25.5"").
While I appreciate that the 18 pick-up options make this a versitle guitar", I like the full on humbucker sound the best.
I can't find any flaws on the guitar and I did try to find them!Even though I think this guitar is a little pricey I am happy I bought it.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
The jury is still out on this one. Great concept, however, quality control needs to be better. After opening up the box and admiring the workmanship, I noticed several scratch marks on the protective plastic covering the pick guard...I did not remove it since I found a bigger problem. The pickup selector switch only went to the bridge pickup [bottom position], then both pickups [middle position], but the top position did not hold for the neck pickup. Was this a return? You would think this would be checked out before it left the factory. I ordered a replacement, so hopefully the next one will work. For the few minutes I was testing it out it felt comfortable and easy to play with many tonal options.

great workmanship......wonderfull crisp sound (it gets down and dirty too!!).....such a brease to play, action easy and fast....... and its a really great looking guitar....get one youll love it!!!
the manytonal features are terrific......its like ownig a strat and a tele....versitile!
this giutar is beautiful....no flaw in paint or build.....a little buzz on the e string but it doesnt show up throught the amp.....tuners better than average...a slight tweek evry third time i play it...workmanship..is that of more expensive guitars....over alll..very nice.
the price is a little steep.....but when you get this beauty you dont mind too much...and when you play it , that helps too....does come w a sharp gig bag....
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
I have learned from this most recent order to trust MF when they rate the condition of used gear. This is the 1st time that I bought something used from so far away. I must say that when they say it's condition 1 and in mint condition, it really is.
So many different sounds come out of this axe! Fun to play too. My teenage son is learning to play but me his dad is hoggin this baby.
Bought this as used from MF and for the price and the discount coupon I applied, the price was fantastic. The condition was 1 and absolutely mint condition. Well worth the anticipation. Window shopped this puppy for too long.
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
Great value & style guitar. The scale is small so more ideal for those with smaller fingers.
Great versatility in tone with coil splitting on both PUs. Pickups sound good from anything from clean jazz to classic rock.
Very well made. Doesn't look cheap or have junk parts on it. Came with 9s for strings, but felt like rubberbands. Replaced with 10s and had to slightly adjust the top E string intonation.
Great value. Nice axe for the money.
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
I would recomend this guitar to anyone. This little axe is so versatile and playable by anyone with any kind of playing style. I have a Strat, a Tele and an SG, and dig them all, but there is something special about this guitar. Also, I have shorter, fat fingers, so the smaller scale sure doesn't hurt!
Kudos to Fender on this re-imagining of an already classic instrument!
The coil splitting capabilities provides a wide range of sounds. The tone knob, while (in my opinion) isn't worth squat on most other guitars, really provides that little bit of extra tone shaping on top of all the sounds you already get with the 3 way toggle and the 2 switches. The humbucking pups look great and sound fantastic.
Fender Japan makes quality goods.
A bit pricey, but after buying it, removing the strings, tweaking the set-up to my personal tastes, giving a good polishing and conditioning the fretboard and resringing (ERnie Ball 9s are my pref), it was worth every penny.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
Got the Mustang and immediatly liked it although there are some things about it that stink- like always on a Fender. If you got small hands- this is a fun guitar. Fender Japan still produces quality- The guitar will need string trees- which immediatly de-value the guitar. The tuning heads are crappy (sloppy) They stay in tune but are a pain to fine tune. (hey change the dies once in a while!). Pups arn't bad - and sound best through Fender amps. Guitar has the guts to do the job, but a custom shop alternative will be the wave of the future for this guitar, as many Fenders only improve in the hands of those dudes.
Nice what they did with the splitting of Pups and havn't looked under the cover, but there's probably a resistor or two needed in there.
All together this guitar is worth the money because of the Japanese Quality.
Untamed Raw Fender Mustang - Glad they made it.
A little room for improvement.
Japan still takes pride in quality
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
This guitar really surprised me. I was expecting a kind of little novelty guitar. But it is not like that - it is a real guitar with heaps of tone, and great sustain. And it is an absolute delight to play - so easy with the short scale (even with my small hands and fingers). I live in Australia and bought my Mustang sight unseen, but opening up that box was great. I haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face since I first plugged it in. This Mustang is just plain fun to play - and it sounds great to boot. I think every guitarist should have one of these in their arsenal. The Mustang Special is just a joy to play, and isn't that what it is all about??
After reading the positive reviews on this site (thanks everyone!) I recently bought a Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special. I was a little nervous, because the reviews just seemed a little too good to be true. Well I wasn't disappointed - this is a great little guitar. I love the hard tail and the splitable humbuckers. I bought a Squier duo-sonic for my son last year - it has the same body shape as the Mustang Special. Now the duo-sonic is a nice little guitar, especially as a first guitar, but it is not in the same league as this Mustang. This Mustang has attitude and doesn't want to be judged by its size. The humbuckers sound great (although they are not particularly loud, but you just turn your amp up a bit more), and the switches and tone control provide heaps of tonal options.
The good people at Fender Japan know how to make guitars. This Mustang has been made with attention to detail. I have the Lake Placid Blue model and the finish and fittings are excellent. The rosewood fretboard is a little dry, but I will just rub some oil into it when I change the strings.
I have owned and sold many guitars over the years, and the Mustang Special is a great guitar for the money. I would consider buying another one to have both of the colours.
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
My next fender is either this or a strat. I want a strat because of the vibrato so I can delve into the dark arts of Jimi Hendrix with more depth, but this guitar is more versitile, and feels better to play. Plus its small and light, so playing it standing up wont be part of a workout regiment.
A mustang with a little bit for everyone. Hard tail keeps it stable, shorter scale and smaller body makes it an ideal guitar for smaller people and anybody who wants a versitale and light guitar for gigging.
My first run in with a MIJ fender. It was made REALLY well. It felt sturdy, looked beatutiful, and the gamechanger, the neck was unreal. I started playing without really studying the neck, and for a split second i though the thing was fretless. It plays like butter, if that butter was melted and churned into a silky cream. The different scale didnt affect my playing because I didnt realize it. I just follwed the frets (when i could feel them). Easily one of the best playing guitars I have tried. The sounds that came out of it were varied and versitle, every fender model can be found within the sound on this guitar. Great for rock, like the Stones, Beatles, Creedance, and of course heavier stuff came out ideal.
The price is right in the ballpark if not lower than I would have imagined this guitar to be. It is made very well and is worth every penny.
Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:
I've played other Mustangs before, but honestly they just can't compare witht this. I had been admiring it online for a while, and then when i finally got an opportunity to play it I was blown away! It's not too heavy, the strings feel great against the neck, and the sound it puts out is just flawless. It is a bit smaller than other guitars, but not too much. I would reccommend this to anybody looking for a nicer guitar.
Probably the best Mustang out there
It's definitely worth the price
