Features:

So many different sounds come out of this axe! Fun to play too. My teenage son is learning to play but me his dad is hoggin this baby.

Quality:

Bought this as used from MF and for the price and the discount coupon I applied, the price was fantastic. The condition was 1 and absolutely mint condition. Well worth the anticipation. Window shopped this puppy for too long.

Overall:

I have learned from this most recent order to trust MF when they rate the condition of used gear. This is the 1st time that I bought something used from so far away. I must say that when they say it's condition 1 and in mint condition, it really is.

Great Guitar....

| Review By: Kenneth Hudson | 3 months, 1 day ago

Features:

Great versatility in tone with coil splitting on both PUs.  Pickups sound good from anything from clean jazz to classic rock.

Quality:

Very well made.  Doesn't look cheap or have junk parts on it.  Came with 9s for strings, but felt like rubberbands.  Replaced with 10s and had to slightly adjust the top E string intonation.

Value:

Great value.  Nice axe for the money.

Overall:

Great value & style guitar.  The scale is small so more ideal for those with smaller fingers.

This guitar has a Napoleon complex - despite its diminutive physical size, it is a relentless tyrant of sound! The Mustang Special is a superb choice for anyone of smaller stature or smaller hands; I would think it would make an ideal guitar for a foxy lady. It resolves several things left to be desired about the standard mustang, and offers a delicious variety of distinct tones. It’s a real beauty and has superb craftsmanship and quality all around. My friends and I all agree it is the best guitar any of us have ever played.

The Mustang Special has the coolest tone selection system of any guitar I’ve ever known of. You can select any combination of the four coils, forward or aft, in either single coil mode or humbucker mode, and combine any coil with any other coil(s) from the other pickup, or isolate any individual coil, and let me tell you they all sound amazing and clean, so many sonic options available here! Although I count “only” 15 tonal options, not 18 like Fender says*. To explain its switches: The lower-horn 3-way “Gibson-style” toggle switch is a pickup selector; up=neck, middle=both, down=bridge. Then, the two upper-horn 3-way switches allow you to select forward or aft coils, or humbucker mode, by putting the selector switch in the middle position. Finally there are the master volume and tone knobs at bottom.

Pickup Selection Options:

Neck Coil 1/Neck Humbucker/Neck Coil 2; Bridge Coil 1/Bridge Humbucker/Bridge Coil 2)

1) N1

2) NH

3) N2

4) B1

5) BH

6) B2

7) N1+B1

8) N1+BH

9) N1+B2

10) NH+B1

11) NH+BH

12) NH+B2

13) N2+B1

14) N2+BH

15) N2+B2

That’s 15, not 18. Sorry Fender, back to math class with you!

At only 6 lbs., hours of playing the Mustang Special do not lead to fatigue. Body shape is exceptionally comfortable standing up or sitting down. Comfortable and fast neck that is straight as an arrow. String-through-body just rocks, great sustain. Pickups are hot - real screamers with distortion. Action is perfect; intonation was easy to set up. This Mustang has a smaller butt than other Mustangs, since they replaced the infamously troublesome Mustang bridge/tremolo system with a solid hard tail bridge – good move. I don’t want a whammy bar anyway because I always whack my hand on them. The vintage style tuners are smooth as butter, you can tell they are top quality. I saw someone say the Duo-Sonic has better tuners, not true these are definitely superior. A lesser-known great feature is on the headstock, the ends of the strings go down into little holes in the tuning machines, so poking your fingers on the ends of the stings will never happen, such a great feature!

Bottom line - this is in my opinion the best Mustang ever made. In my opinion it’s a way better guitar than the standard mustangs that cost more.  I got a great deal on mine from Musician’s Friend. My only complaint is Fender needs to use more robust packaging when shipping their guitars, it came in a gig bag inside a cardboard box with very little internal bracing or padding, and could have easily been damaged during shipping. I bought a Fender 12-string from MF once that ended up with a damaged headstock because of poor packaging. But my Squier Duo-Sonic had awesome packaging, so there’s no excuse Fender – protect ALL your guitars properly!

The Untamed Horse is the Untamed Guitar

Features:

A little room for improvement.

Quality:

Japan still takes pride in quality

Value:
Overall:

Got the Mustang and immediatly liked it although there are some things about it that stink- like always on a Fender. If you got small hands- this is a fun guitar.  Fender Japan still produces quality- The guitar will need string trees- which immediatly de-value the guitar. The tuning heads are crappy (sloppy) They stay in tune but are a pain to fine tune. (hey change the dies once in a while!). Pups arn't bad - and sound best through Fender amps. Guitar has the guts to do the job, but a custom shop alternative will be the wave of the future for this guitar, as many Fenders only improve in the hands of those dudes.

Nice what they did with the splitting of Pups and havn't looked under the cover, but there's probably a resistor or two needed in there.

All together this guitar is worth the money because of the Japanese Quality.

Untamed Raw Fender Mustang - Glad they made it.
