Compact Mustang body, short scale length and powerful humbucking pickups with extensive tonal control.

The Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar has a modified offset Mustang body, ’60s “C”-shaped 24” short scale maple neck, and dual Fender Enforcer humbucking pickups with ’70s-style covers and unique switching. Other features include a rosewood fretboard with modern 9.5” radius and medium jumbo frets, pickup toggle switch, 3-way coil selector slide switch for each humbucking pickup (enabling 15 different tonal options), mint green pickguard, ’70s-style hard-tail Stratocaster bridge, vintage-style tuners and strap buttons, and deluxe gig bag.

The Pawn Shop Series guitars draw inspiration from the eccentric and sometimes wildly innovative Fender creations of the mid-'60s and mid-’70s era that sometimes found their way to the outside world and into the more esoteric pages of Fender history. With this adventurous spirit in mind, Pawn Shop Series instruments emerge as all-new Fender guitars with a boldly creative alchemy of diverse Fender components. And while they are newer members of the Fender family crafted with thoroughly modern sound and quality, Pawn Shop Series instruments now take the stage with a remarkable new identity as "guitars that never were but should have been."

Two things make this a great guitar in my book. First, is its comfortable playability. The guitar has great sustain, especially for how light the guitar's body is. I set it up with 10s, since the stock 9s felt flimsy. It remained very easy to play with the heavier (albeit not exactly heavy) strings.

Second is the tonal versatility. Each of the pickup selections makes a very audible difference in tone, and I have not found a bad tone on this guitar yet. This versatility makes it likely that this would be the "last guitar off the island" if things ever came to that.

Mine is a Made in Japan model, and Fender moved production to Mexico around 2012 or so. The MIJ model was set up perfectly, well-intonated, and had a nearly flawless finish. I've got a USA-made Fender too, and this compares very favorably as far as workmanship and obvious pride in production goes.

I'm not knocking MIM Fenders, BTW - just noting that my review pertains to the older MIJ model. The chief design difference is the MIMs have a better truss rod adjustment point (bottom of headstock for the MIMs). Smart move by Fender, as you have to remove the pickguard on the MIJ to adjust the truss rod. So on that score, at least, the MIM wins. (I'm still keeping the MIJ, though!!)

Two minor gripes. First, the pickguard does not seem to be insulated, so when it's dry you can get a lot of static scratchiness if you touch the pickguard while playing. Some copper foil should fix this, but Fender should have addressed this in production. Second, the frets were not as well dressed as I would have liked. The wire was a bit rough at points, but this is not a big problem. As noted, these are minor gripes.

Some of the "Pawn Shop" stuff strikes me as gimmicky tripe, but I think this guitar has the potential to become a collector's item on the order of a Gibson Blueshawk or some similar oddball yet intelligent guitar. If you're still reading, you owe it to yourself to give it a test drive. The bottom line is that I play this guitar more than any other, and it has been great for the 10 months or so that I've owned it.

If I could just justify paying 499.99 for the pickup assembly only I would. Great sounds. Most of the time too many guitars have only one or two truly usable sounds though numerous combinations and switches. This pickup assembly delivers several pleasant tones. Intonation and tuning stability are SERIOUS issues on the one I received. Nothing helped. It was so bad that I gave up and went to spend time with my Gibson SG - ususally another notorious tuning beast. I will look for one at a store where I can lay hands-on it and find a good one; that is how one also can find an SG that is playable, tunable, and a keeper. Musicians Friend made the return very easy. I just do not want to get another Mustang-by-mail and be disappointed. After 35 years of playing, I do not want the frustration of constantly retuning the third and second strings. Other than that, it is a fun piece and I hope to find one without this troublesome issue.

It took me a little while to get used to the size. I am kinda a big dude though. I knew it was a smaller guitar but didn't remember it being that small. It sounds great the selector switch is cool to play around with, but I could see myself being happy with picking one variation. Overall I am happy with this purchase.

I have many guitars...including 2 Jaguars. I am now ready to sell all of them and keep this Mustang. The size and weight are perfect for me, when I'm playing it, I feel like dancing! I restrung it with 11's, tone now is very powerful, open string chords stay in tune, yet the strings are loose enough for easy full step bends.

I own 9 guitars and this one is tied as a favorite with a MIM Stratocaster FSR that I also purchased from Musician's Friend. The one I got is the made in Mexico model. I wanted the Japan model but was put off by having to take the neck off to adjust it the truss rod if it ever needed it. I can not find one flaw with mine. I love the way it sits in my lap. I love the finish. The neck feels wonderful. I trade and sell a lot but this ones a keeper. Never will it leave me.. As far as quality goes, if it last till I'm dead I'll be good to go..

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:

I am 5'2" and this guitar is sized just right. It is much lighter (6.5#) than my jag and seems easier to play. The body is also smaller. It enables me to pick out my errors quickly, almost before I make them so I have a chance to correct. The smaller size seems to help me respond faster. I think the jag's weight and size is very good to work out on daily; this one is for performance and daily because of the ease of play. I don't feel like I'm fighting this guitar at all.
Tone: Still playing around with all the settings. Right now I am using the middle setting, with both neck and bridge in the center position. This tamps down the fender squawk without losing the energy. THe guitar also has some beautiful harmonics that ring and sustain. I played it without any effects, bass and treble on 0 and it still rings which adds another dimension to playing.
I have not yet changed the strings but did not notice any intonation problems. The setup seems serviceable. I got the sunburst white face model. There are a few well below the surface bubbles in the finish at the tip top of the neck on one side. Not worth parting over. MF offered it as a stupid deal of the day (FINALLY) and I am glad I was not stupid enough to wait until "next time".

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:

I like Mustangs because of theirs light weight and short scale. Mine weighs in about 7lbs 3oz. The versitility of the pickups switching is a blessing. I don't need several guitars at a gig. I have small hands and unnaturally short pinkys so the short scale is great. I have the Kurt Cobain Mustang too and it has a 7.25" fretboard radius, but I like the 9.5" much more. The 9.5" is more appealing because the strings match the radius better than the Kurt Cobain Mustang so I don't have to grip so hard to do bar chords. The pickups are very strong and sound good to me. I have no plans to change anything right now.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special Electric Guitar:

Conceptually, this guitar is really great. The 15 tonal options are a unique feature that comes in very handy, and is just a lot of fun! And the Enforcer pickups sound very good, especially in conjunction with the small scale of the guitar. Where the guitar suffers is the modified body shape, which reduces the original body by almost 1/4. This makes the guitar slightly neck-heavy, plus it doesn't feel quite substantial enough...something feels missing. The build quality is pretty good, considering it is a Mexican Fender (these used to be made in Japan). I had high hopes for this guitar because I always wanted a Mustang with humbuckers, but because of the undersized body I cannot recommend this guitar. It might be worth your while to just modify a stock Mustang (that's what I did).
