I feel compelled to dispel some misinformation out there by all the Squier bashers who seem to have nothing better to do than rate everything Squier poorly. I bought one of these just to check out and probably pass along to my son in a few years when he is old enough to shoulder a Strat. First of all, this is a quality starter set. My was not broken, poorly made, did not catch on fire and destroy my house etc, cause world hunger.. (you get the idea). For the budding guitarist there is nothing better to begin on than this pack. The guitar is well made, stays in tune quite well, and sounds terrific even through the little squier 10 watt amp. The tuner is fine, although the cord that comes with the set has a tendency to slip out of the tuner input jack for no apparant reason. Easily remedied with another cord of higher quality. The strap is pretty nice but obviously not top quality. The gig bag is not lined and is vinyl, but does not appear it will fall apart and drop the guitar. Sadly, mine did not come with picks as they must have been left out of my pack. Not a biggie as I have a few hundred laying around various rooms of my house, but is an issue as they were supposed to come in the kit. This would be very discouraging to a beginner if they received the pack I got. The book is pretty informative for getting the basics down and learning a few riffs, but is not a substitute for lessons or more detailed method books, but fine nonetheless. Mine came with a coupon you could redeem at your dealer for discounts on Fender instructional books and a guide and tools to properly setup the guitar. Overall, this is a wonderful set to get your little Clapton or Stevie Ray going on, or to play around on for yourself. I would recommend this set over the other starter sets such as the BC Rich or the Dean Dimebag as the shape of those guitars is not really conducive to learning how to hold and shoulder a guitar properly. Thanks for letting me post my comments and I hope this is helpful to parents of those just getting started, or new older starting guitarist.

i agree with the people here, i wish i had come here to read reviews before buying this "strat pack". when i first saw it, i thought it would be great, legendary fender stratocaster! right?... not really.. it was good when i first got it, the strings are much nicer than my steel string acoustic but soon i found out that the strings as mentioned before here are a bit too close to the frets making this thing buzz like crazy especially the 5th and 6th string. the whammy bar/tremolo bar works fine but it makes the guitar go out of tune instantly (duh... but i mean reeeeeealy out of tune; and im not using it while im tuning duh!). but regardless of the whammy bar, it goes out of tune very quickly anyway. the gig bar is a piece of crap. seriously its 2 pieces of black cloth poorly stitched up with a zipper on the side...(its just really poorly made) i dont think theres anything wrong with the tuner or the cable... the amp is fine as long as you dont play very loudly.. the strap is crap, the leather ends start to rip and can't hold up the guitar... so the four nicest things about the guitar are... #1 multi colored pics! (alright!) #2 it looks very much like any other average guitar (coolio!~) #3 the instruction book is like any other (yay its not as crappy as the rest!) #4 its the cheapest thing out there!

Well, I got this guitar yesterday as my first guitar. The guitar itself is well made. It has a volume knob and 2 tone knobs. It holds a tune pretty well. I haven't used the whammy bar yet, so I can't comment on it. The amp is great for practicing, but it buzzes a lot if you put the distortion on and turn up the volume. But that is because it has single coil pickups that aren't noiseless. The cable is decent, but I recommend buying a new one. The tuner is decent, but mine broke after my cat knocked it off my desk. The gig bag isn't great. The strap isn't very comfortable. All in all, great pack for beginners. I highly recommend it.
I bought this guitar for something to learn on. It's no Les Paul but it works for beginners. It comes with everything you need (amp, guitar, strap, cord....) and is easy to learn on. I would reccomend some new strings as I broke two of them off the first month I had it, and a new strap because the factory one wore out for me pretty fast. It's really easy to learn on and I'd recommend it to someone buying their first electric guitar.
I got this thing two years ago for Christmas, and though I'm currently looking for a new one, it still is a decent guitar. I haven't had too much trouble with the tuning (I got it to stay tuned down to E flat, Drop D, and even C). After playing other guitars, I notice it is somewhat difficult to play compared to higher end guitars, but it isn't too much of a problem. Definately appropriate for a beginner. It's also pretty durable (the stupid strap came off a lot and dinged it up a couple times, but there is nothing but a few scratches on the guitar.)Other than the guitar, though, the pack is pretty meh. If you plan on keeping the amp for a while, I'd definately get a distortion pedal. The clean channel isn't that bad, but with the lack of gain control for the overdrive channel it's pretty bad (going past "2" on the volume makes it squeal and whine.) The gig bag is pretty much useless. The zipper is only at the bottom and there are no pockets. Thankfully I only had to use the embarassing thing once. Tuner is ok for a beginner, picks/book are pretty good. If you have someone wanting to start playing guitar, I'd recommend this.
this is the first guitar i ever got. its pretty sweet and i have alot of good memories with it. This is a great deal if your just starting out. I beefed mine up with an sh-6 duncan distortion symour duncan pickup which made this the best thing ever
I got this guitar second hand from my friend, it's not actually that bad for a beginner. The sound is acceptable plus for beginners like me were not gonna really care for a while. Taps on this are pretty much impossible, and hammer-ons need to be done with some force. but still good starter guitar to bang around on plus I throw mine around all the time and it doesn't break.
buzzes,my high E-string fell off the bridge, amp is terrible, When you use the wammy bar the whole thing goes way out of tune, Its just terrible. Don't get. Get an ibanez or epihpone.
I bought this pack a couple of years ago b/c my first act had worn out. First off, the guitar plays great for beginners just starting out, The amp is plenty loud enough for a starter, the overdrive is alright, but I prefer a boss distortion pedal, the clean channel is really good. The cord doesnt last long, I recommend buying a better one. The tuner is crap, The bag fell apart in the first couple of months. Overall this is a great buy, and after I get done playing a gig on the SG I look back and am glad I had(and still have and use during my band's practices and some small gigs) such a great guitar to learn on.
It's an ok guitar if your just starting out. It was my first guitar and it was ok everything in the package was decent to say the least, although if you put some money into it like I did its pretty good.
The guitar is the only thing your buying, the amp has this annoying humming noise when the volume is increased, the strap wouldn't last to long on gigs, there are a nice array of picks, the book is helpful for beginner guitarists, the most horrible thing about the package was the 'condom' shaped gig bag it look atrocious and it had no padding.
wat u thought would be a good guitar isn't it falls out of tune so easy replaced them and i play guitar for hours but this is different i would tune it up 2 mins later would fall out of tune my friend also has this guitar and it does the same thing was very dissapointed with it
