When looking for the right guitar my enthusiasm towards alternative rock with great clean tones here and sold crunch and distortion there led me towards this Jazzmaster! (That and Lee Renaldo.) It looks great, plays great, feels great and sounds great! I hadn't been putting much time into my craft as of late but this guitar has renewed my vigor and is now my number one. Can't wait to take it to the stage. Only thing left to get tech savvy about is the whammy bar which I've read is not uncommon among Jazzmasters to be loose until you figure out how to adjust it. No biggie. Still couldn't be happier with this guitar!

Bought this guitar on a stupid deal and saved enough to buy a Fender (G&G) hard case which was also on sale. Once I un-boxed it and held it in my hands, I was hooked. Love the look and the feel of this guitar!
On to the playing, but first, it really needed a complete setup. To me, that's really sad for a instrument that was made in Mexico. I've had guitars from China that needed less tweeking. Only after I plugged it in did I realize the full extent of issues this guitar had. The volume and tone pots had a heck of a lot of static, with some serious drop off. Further, the entire electronic setup had major grounding/shielding issues.
Replaced the MIK pots with Fender CTS's which relieved the static issue but not the grounding/shielding HUMMMM. Currently working on improving the shielding. If that doesn't fix it I'll try some different pickups. Luckily I'm always looking for a project and a challenge! Did I mention I really love the look and fell of this guitar!
Sound and tone are always a work in progress:o)

Bottom line, If you're not looking for a project guitar you might want to keep lookin'
Of course, it could just be me, or the axe I got. As always, your results may vary:)
Luckily Musician's Friend has one the best return policies in the biz!

Comments about Fender Special Edition Blacktop HH Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

Been wanting a Jazz for a while. Decided to pull the trigger perhaps earlier than I should have when I heard that this beautiful specimen was being released at the price that it was. It's that price for a reason, I have now realized. Definitely has the weight and feel of a Jazz (and looks to die for), but the dual hums do NOT give that classic Jazzmaster tone. Without a glorious P90 pickup (or any single coil, for that matter), the magic is unfortunately lost. But, if that powerful, sometimes overbearing tone is what you're looking for, then it's definitely here. Fortunately, the lower price point allows for some custom shop-like (or garage style) customization down the road, something I will definitely be exploring.
Out of the box, the saddles on the bridge are constantly coming unscrewed after even the shortest playing time. Luckily, I haven't had one separated yet, but having to stop mid-session to adjust is annoying. Floating bridges, I know, are pretty notorious for this kinda thing, but what's been happening with mine is unacceptable, really.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Blacktop HH Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

I had looked at this guitar FOREVER, I loved the racing stripe, the black... just thought it was beautiful in pictures. But whenever I mentioned it to other guitar players, they would absolutely trash jazzmasters. "they buzz, they don't stay in tune, the strings come off the saddles when you do bends or use the whammy bar."

Well, I FINALLY bought it, and it came packed beautifully, I strummed a few notes and there IS a slight buzz from the bridge, i'm sure it's an easy mod to stop it, but you don't hear it over the amp. Aside from that it's probably my most played guitar. And I have American Teles, SGs, Les Pauls and Strats... and this one just feels almost like they had me in mind when they built it.

I actually own 3 Mexican Fenders, and not plugged in, just playing be feel, I'd have a hard time telling them from my USA ones... the Mexican Plant is putting out some serious quality, don't let the country of origin scare you away.

This guitar is AWESOME, and such a steal!

Comments about Fender Special Edition Blacktop HH Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

Great Guitar. I play a lot of surf and the tone is excellent. Everybody knows the bridge's on Fender Jazzmasters are horrible though. This is a problem with Fender and not Musicians Friend. My Bridge broke after 2 months. It's too bad because Fender makes quality products but the bridges on JMs are so awful. If you get this guitar my only advice would be to plan on replacing the stock bridge with something else, personally I'm going with a mastery bridge which adds another 150 to the price of the guitar. You can find much cheaper bridge replacements but I can't speak on behalf of their quality. Good luck!

Comments about Fender Special Edition Blacktop HH Jazzmaster Electric Guitar:

I tried one of these on a whim in February at a GC in Detroit and it was really poorly set up. I saw this on sale at MF and thought, why not give it a try. I am glad I did!

The guitar came well packed and out of the box, the finish was almost flawless with only a slight indent on the side of the fretboard near the headstock. The general setup of the guitar was excellent. All I had to do was tune it up and plug it in.

I do not use the tremelo bar on this because my understanding is that if I look at it, the guitar will go out of tune. It is still in the bag. I used this for playing 2.5 hours this past Thursday night and it totally rocked. It stayed in tune well and the sound was excellent, well beyond the price.

My only complaint about playing the guitar has to do with where I position my right hand when I play it and that is a defect in my playing versus the guitar. I keep my hand on the bridge and with my playing style, it tends to loosen up the screws on the bridge. Again, defect in my style.

I own about 50 guitars, mostly Gibsons and Fenders and this is the most Gibson sounding Fender I have ever played and that is a very good thing. The feel of a Fender and the sound of a Gibson in a very nice looking package is a true winner. In my opinion, this blows any Epiphone away and ranks up there with a lower end Gibson SG i.e. a Special but at a better price (and way better looking).

Great guitar. Really easy to play. Feels good in your hands not too heavy. The only thing are the stock pickups. I normally change my pickups anyway. But out of the box it was pretty weak sounding. Pop in some SD and now everything is great. My new favorite.

Got it, nothing worked, jammed the selector a bit and the bridge pup worked but not the neck. Pulled pickguard off, they never wired the neck pickup to begin with. How this passed QC I have no idea. Returning for another. Fender really screwed up on this, as there is no way this should have passed if there was really any kind of testing.
