I am a fairly new musician and an extremely weathered audience having spent my fortune and past 20 years on concerts and music travel. I have always visually loved the natural ash body of the american standard telecaster with the black pickgaurd. However when I statred playing 4 years ago, I received a mexican standard black telly (like Dylans) as a gift. I have earned what chops I have on it, am attached and know I am undoubtably a "telly girl". So now I am searching for a new guitar and cannot get the natural body telly out of my mind. Do I spend a grand for a guitar that will be close in sound to the one I have grown to love?.......NO dont have to! Found the beautiful spalted maple with the Seymour Duncan pickups. This guitar is gorgeous in sound..bright and expressive--people are gonna listen to you, and simply beautiful to look at--people are gonna look at you(r guitar). ha ha. I am one happy tele owner!! I have two now that offer really really different options for my playing and fill the aestetic of the natural wood look. I did have one problem with the tuner knob being slightly bent. It was corrected in 3 minutes with a little wrench pull, pretty positive it happened after factory in the box. Other than that paid 5 extra bucks and got the guitar in two days. Muscians Friend did a good job of communicating and shipping. As other people have commented on this guitar...ALOT recieved for the price paid.
Read the specs. For me they were perfect and I was right. AND the thing is gorgeous!!!
I was worried as I did not have much information on guitars built in Indonesia. However this guitar is flawless from the laying and finishing of the spalted maple, to the neck connection, to the flame top clear coat to the extra attention paid to the headstock finish. I did have a bent tuner knob that I am pretty sure happened post factory in the box. It was fixed in 3 minutes with a pull of a wrench.
Looked at a lot of tellys, even custom built. Found what I wanted with this one for half the price or more! Honestly, even after endless research, I did have to get past the Indonesian built aspect however glad I did. I also must admit I would have liked a gig bag with it but not sure if thats getting greedy or not.

Others have said the same, but it is true - if you buy this guitar, you may find your other instruments gathering dust. No, it doesn't have quite the smooth low crunch as a Les Paul. No, it doesn't have quite the country twang of a Tele. No, it can't get quite the same bright ring of a Strat in the 2 or 4 position. BUT... you can pick this thing up, and play an incredibly ecclectic mix of music without ever putting it down. Going from an Eagles song, to Iron Maiden to the Police is no problem.

Plus, it is hands down the nicest looking guitar at this price point.
Thin, lightweight body makes for comfortable playing. Coil splitter switch nice, but of questionalbe real value. Nice tuners, bridge. This is not meant to be a complex instrument, so the features fit the concept. Only complaint is that I found myself pulling the high E string off the neck on occasion. Perhaps not quite as much fretboard space as I'm used to.
I think most people will be amazed at the build quality for the price. I've seen way more expensive instruments that are significantly "less playable." Good materials, marquee pickups, nice hardware. Even the glossy finish, which I am not usually a fan of, comes off very nice in person. No complaints.
Amazing. Again, there are a lot more expensive guitars that don't feel this good. Nice hardware and above-standard fit and finish aren't usually found at this price. Sometimes I wonder if Fender keeps this guitar under-promoted because they don't have much margin on it. Who knows. In any case, let the used market be your guide. First, you can almost never find one up for sale and second, if you do find one, the price is often at or above "new." That says a lot.

Get a clue

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

The set neck design is superior than a bolt on neck for sustain. The person who wrote that Gibson uses bolt on necks is incorrect. Gibson uses a set neck design. As far as going out of tune, buy some better tuners and you're set. You should not write a review without knowing what you are talking about.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

Overall very pleased with this guitar. Looks great and sounds great, too. Love the coil tap sound--especially in the middle position. Took some major set-up to make the neck true, though.Liked it so much that I ordered a second one but sent it back because of flaw in finish and minor defect with bridge. Wasn't near as unique looking, either. Have had numerous positive remarks on the great looks and sound when playing out with this ax in comparison to my old strat.Great sustain. Good job Fender--and as always, thanks to MF for being the great company that you are.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar for Christmas, kept it about a week and returned it. The veneer was almost coming lose on the body of the guitar. I was going to have to spend about $60 to have the guitar set up just to decide if I wanted to keep it. The condition in which it arrived rendered the instrument non-playable.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

Great guitar so get it.
This is a great guitar. I was a bit worried about getting a Indonesian guitar but it is worth it. I can basicly get any sound I want out of this guitar. You can bend the strings all day and they wont go out of tune. You can buy guitars for 3 times the price of this baby and you wont be getting as good of a guitar. It is also very light so its fun to play shows with and not kill you'r back.
The only bad thing is the volume knob is a little bit scetchy on mine but it looks like that happend when it was shipped.
You can't get a better guitar for the money.

Swiss Army Knife of Guitars

By TeleloveMy2ladies

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I play in a cover band with a pretty diverse set list and I am the designated "tone-clone" of the band meaning the other guy usually handles the straight-ahead Crunch and I have to simulate everything from AC-DC, to Skynard to organ solos. With the right pedals this guitar can do it all! With the coil tap the powerful and hot pickups and solid body w/set neck, this thing is capable of a lot of about anything.

Some comments on palm muting the bridge: at first it is awkward if you are used to other styles of bridge like a Les Paul or standard Tele (like I was) but once I got used to it I prefer it and I PM the crap out of songs like "heart breaker" with this thing.

Oh and it is gorgeous! I have never seen a guitar that I liked looking at as much as this one, the likelihood that some other dude will have one is about nil.

If you are wondering why it is this cheap its only evident in tiny details. My tone knob is a little loose, though the volume has a nice weight to it but I'm sure if I told my guitar guy to do something about it he could at a pretty low cost.

If they made one with a maple fretboard and a tremelo I might buy another and only play these two guitars forever.

A work of art meets function!

By Wayne B.

from Pa

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I started playing in 1975. I've been through so many guitars and amps I've lost count a long time ago. I was forced to sell all my accumulated gear 1 yr after losing my left index finger tip in a power saw and not being able to touch the finger from 1999-2003. Throughout all those years, the only guitars I kept for any period of time were an American made Ovation, two custom PBC's and the custom ordered Melancon P90 Artist with LR Baggs piezio.Lately I had the urge to buy a lesser expensive guitar and low watt all tube amp to keep in the LR and play in the A/C for the summer. After months of searching to no avail for a used Melancon I could afford, I finally decided to give this guitar a chance, and I was not by any means a fan of Fender, nor Vox.I now have a fabulous set up consisting of this Fender guitar, the 4 watt Vox tube amp (played at #5 set at .25 watts), the Fulltone Supa-Trem and a Boss/ Fender 63 reverb pedal. I could not be more pleased with the products, all of which were purchased from MF.The guitar is fabulous! The only thing I will change are the strings and will use my Snake Oil Brand instead. The action, intonation, looks, style, playability and function are excellent! I have not one complaint, and that is saying a lot for me. And yes, it even looks better in person than it does on the web site.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

Wow - that is all I can say. I bought this thing with pretty high expectations. It needed to sound like GOD and play like butter or I was not going to be happy. Fender OVER delivered on this. I don't think I will EVER sell this guitar. It has quickly become my favorite guitar to sit around and riff on. It sounds AMAZING - by rolling off the volume or coil tapping you can get from one side of the tone spectrum to the other...it doesn't matter what you play - you can get that sound out of this! The only reason it doesn't get a 5 over all from me is because I give NOTHING a 5. If I did - this might get it.

Spalted Fender Tele

By Al-6lFor

from Nebraska

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

Had this for almost a year, so time for a review. First of all, to agree with everyone else, this thing is BEAUTIFUL! The binding has a nice, aged look, top is striking, stained mahogany back is equally nice. I have done no setup to this and its perfect. Keep in mind that spalted maple varies greatly and yours may not look like the picture. I have seen some very bland ones out there. Some guys have complained about the coil tap, but I love it. I use it for a little boost when I dont want to go full overdrive. Single coil tone is very nice but has a voice all its own, differing from my strat & other teles I have played. Humbucker tone is a monster, especially in the neck position. Lack of sustain? I think not! Neck positon with some overdrive and this beast will scream! Everyone who has seen this can't believe its not an American. Neck joint and fretwork are flawless. Only complaint is noisy selector switch. (easy fix) All in all, an outstanding instrument.

Amazing

By Dan66

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I've never been compelled to write a review before but this thing is just amazing and I feel I owe it to Fender to write this glowing review. First off, this guitar is absolutely beautiful in person. I know a lot of reviews say "the pictures don't do it justice" but believe me, the pictures DO NOT do this thing justice..It's stunning, really. The neck is a little on the narrow side but the wide radius helps and bends don't fret out at all like they do on a lot of other Fenders I've played. I love the duncans and the coil tap feature. The heel is amazing, perfectly smooth, no bump at all, it's perfect. What else can I say, this guitar just has that "it" factor. Makes me vibrato like SRV on crack. I love it. Ima go play...

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I just got this guitar today and am impressed. I have always liked the look of Tele's, but not the options. This one has it all. Nice pickups, arched top, beautiful finish, backrouted body, and tone for days. Don't believe the negative hype: It's not as heavy or heavier as a Paul. In fact, when I opened the shipping box and pulled out the case I ordered with it, I thought they shipped an empty case. I was expecting a boat anchor like my LP. Major surprise....It's light, balanced, comfortable, very playable neck, and a ton of sweet sounds are at my fingertips .Now the downside.....the pot for push/pull coil tap is a bit rattley,as is the pickup selector switch.Very minor gripes....excellent axe! I'll write more after I break it in...This is cutting into my playing time.

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

I was drawn to this guitar in a local music shop for it's striking good looks. When I picked it up, my jaw dropped. A set neck mahogany telecaster with dual humbuckers? The persnikity sales guy scoffed at it. "It isn't a tele". I bought it anyway :p

I love how it feels and plays, and sounds. I have to actively force myself to play my other guitars over this one.

My only minor complaint is that the hardware, mainly the jacks and knobs, feel a tad on the cheap side. I say that being used to high end guitars. I think the hardware is more than adequate for this price point, but if you have really high quality standards, you may find yourself swapping/upgrading the knobs and jack!

After many years dominated by business, I bought a Slimline Semi Hollow Tele in Kansas City, to join my vintage Ovation Custom Ledgend USA made. So I thought I wanted another guitar but I love Teles so much, so in Kuala Lumpur I saw this one on the wall and I thought 'if this babe plays as good as it looks WOW! Picked it up plugged it in and 2 hours later I finally stopped playing and bought it. It's versatile in sounds, beautiful feel on the neck, and the sales guy was down, he said it's the shops favourite, do you want to buy a new one? NO WAY MAN, this one was just too good to put down! Despite the fact every guitarist in the shop had played it, it was perfect flawless, tells you something, everyone loves this guitar, and now no one else plays it but me :-)

Comments about Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster Spalted Maple HH Electric Guitar:

This guitar is simply amazing... stunningly unique and beautiful, and a wonderful Fender take on the popular Les Paul. With its arched top, neck-through construction, solid mahogany body and maple top, its essentially a Les Paul with a Telecaster outline. Slightly lighter than an LP, with a wider fretboard, thin profile neck and jumbo frets, this thing is made to shred. And it definitely shreds.I've never been one for Duncan Pickups, but these Pearly Gates are exceptional. They not only emulate the warmth of the Gibson style pickups, but add tonality that goes beyond what the Gibsons can do. And with a coil splitter, you can instantly go from fat humbucker crunch to single coil sting... giving you that patented Strat/Tele tone for classic rock and Texas blues. I made only one change to this guitar... I added Grover tuners. The Fenders are fine tuners, but I love the feel of the Grovers that I've installed on all my other guitars, and they give rock-solid performance and stay in tune endlessly. Some may not like guitars that are built overseas. However, I have found that the Korean made guitars are perhaps the most accurately built and beautiful sounding instruments I've played. I own many Epiphones made in Korea, and they are simply outstanding and hold their own against any Gibson. This Tele surpasses even the quality of my Korean Epiphones. Beautiful finish, fine attention to detail, flawless out of the box, slight intonation needed, and that's all!! Phenomenal guitar. This is now my Number One instrument.

I was a little apprehensive about a Korean-made guitar--sometimes they're great, sometimes...This on is a beaut. I'd imagine each one is unique (mine looks little like the one on the website). Love the big frets, the thin neck, and the slimline tapered body. Sounds GREAT--how can a mahogany bodied Fender Tele with Duncan humbuckers still have that great Tele twang?I own 7 Fenders, and this one is a keeper

This thing is amazing! I've played alot of Les Pauls, Strats and Teles but this guitar is the best playing, most versatile of them all. It arrived perfectly set up and was even in tune (after shipping!!!). The Duncans are, of course, the best; tone is buttery smooth with just enough bite, and tapped for single coil have just enough spank to be interesting. All in all, a great import guitar, well worth what I paid for it.

First off I have come back to guitars after being gone many years. Things have changed to say the least (ok my last electric was a Mosrite i bought new)Fender has a winner with the Telecaster Spalted Maple HH guitar. I have been looking for something unique yet not too expensive and simple. This is about a simple as a guitar can get. Fender's tele doesn't overwhelm with knobs, buttons or controls. It is what it has always been...simple.My 1st guitar was destroyed during shipping so my second came with trepedation. I found it to be well set up straight from the get go. It is the only guitar I own that I have not had drag down for a set up after purchase. Whoever set it up did a great job the 1st time. The guitar run through an older Fender Princeton Chorus sounds classicly Fender . I can't describe it better than it has been. The neck is smooth and uncomplicted and fits my smallish hands easily. No buzz that I can find up & down the neck, it rings clear wherever I am. I see no reason to mess with this guitar. Bottom line...winner. It has already gotten comments from others on its unique looks and I can hang with any of the "American made" Fenders my purist buddies own. Simple, easy and inexpensive considering the cost of most guitars today... plus it's a Fender. Sweet!
