OVERVIEW

A versatile pickup configuration and rock-solid tuning stability.

The Floyd Rose Discovery Series DST-3 Electric Guitar features the one-two punch of the innovative Floyd Rose SpeedLoader Tremolo System and a fast, comfortable maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. You'll love how it responds to every nuance of your playing, and the SpeedLoader System lets you execute the wildest trem dive bombs without losing tune! Thanks to the special strings, string changing will go from a 15 minute process to less than 4! Just drop the new specially-designed strings into the special nut and bridge receptacles and play on. Your guitar will be perfectly intonated, in tune, and ready to rock.

With a carefully crafted neck designed to be the most comfortable piece of maple and rosewood you've ever wrapped your hands around, the DST-3 will quickly exceed your expectations.

All Floyd Rose pickups are made from materials selected for their high performance and superior tonal characteristics. The 2 single-coils and single humbucker loaded in the DST-3 give you tons of versatility while delivering tasty sounds craved by players everywhere.

The SpeedLoader Tremolo offers all the versatility of the original Floyd Rose Tremolo with the ease and performance of the SpeedLoader System. You can still execute the most subtle tremolo or wildest dive-bombing effects and return to perfect tuning every time. It also features the TremStopper, which enables the player to block the tremolo system with a simple turn of a screw, converting the tremolo instantly to a hardtail bridge setup.

The SpeedLoader System eliminates the need for the use of Allen wrenches and wire cutters to change strings. The specially designed, dual bullet-end strings only take seconds to slip into the bridge and nut receptacles, and since they are pre-stretched, you don't have to worry about going out of tune.

I actually own a Floyd Rose Redmond Series guitar (yes, these are the models that cost a couple of grand), but I can definitely give a good review of this Discovery Series models. Like the DST-3, my Floyd Rose Redmond has the "2 single-coils and single humbucker loaded" pickups that are so "hot", my cats AND dog run for cover when I plug in the Floyd Rose! I bought this guitar because it is so light and literally "hugs" your body when you have it strapped on. Plus, just look at it; not only is it an amazing guitar, but it is also a work of art! The action is huber fast and the setup comes low to the neck and tight, so you can rip up and down that "puppy" with your eyes shut tight and your "Rockstar" hair "bopping"! In fact, my guitar instructor takes every chance to run around the place showing my Floyd Rose off to the other instructors and I can play this guitar for hours on end. You will likely start seeing the Floyd Rose guitars showing up in the hands of Rock musicians because it has a very "80's Rock" kind of sound to it. It is convenient that there is no Tone knob because I don't know anyone who uses it anyway. To recap, when you get a Floyd Rose guitar, you will want to quit your job and sit for hours playing this instrument, the neck is tight, the action is fast, the pickups are hot, and you'll sound like a Rockstar! Buy one, I did!

The one I recieved came with a defective saddle, so I could not tune my A string. It was working on and off for a little while, but soon completely broke. The single coils have poor tone, though the humbucker is acceptable. Also, the tremolo stop takes about 5 minutes to set up. Overall, a very frustrating experience.

Floyd Rose DST-3

By BLawless

from Chicago, IL.

You can't beat this guitar for the price. When I recieved it I set up the Trem. as per the instructions on the Floyd Rose web site and the thing now plays like a dream. No complaints here at all. Stays in tune and sounds great no matter how hard I beat on the whammy bar. Again you can't beat this guitar for the price.

Spirit of the old Kramer Guitars

I own an '84 Kramer Voyager with an original Floyd Rose and I love it but I don't have a case for it and hate having to carry it around because I'm very attatched to it so when I saw this guitar and it's price I grabbed it. When I got it, it was a bit tricky at first to understand it but I got it figured out. This guitar handles exactly like my Voyager and sounds pretty good. I like the trem-block feature of the speedloader because it takes the trem spring counter balancing process out of switching string guages with it. For the cash this is a very wieldable guitar!!

Amazing guitar

I love this guitar!!!! The floyd rose on it is the best out their for a guitar so cheap. The neck is nice, a little thick, but still really fast. The pick ups are pretty good, i may replace them sometime in the near future. The only thing i can complain about were the strings that came on it, they aren't the best, so i suggest putting some D'addario's on it.

I

By Twangin' Bob

I have been playing this twangin' axe for a few months now and am very satisfied. The different tones available from the 5 way selector are each very different. From the smooth single coil sound to the loud, powerful humbucker (and do not forget the out of phase) position, one can achieve the sounds of a Strat and much more. The strings change in an instant (though they are a touch pricier than most other strings) and do not need to be stretched at all. This thing plays very easy. The maple neck is small and smooth. Pinger picking or with a pick it sounds and plays great. The whammy works very well - I have mine stopped so all I can do is dives. I rarely have to tune, although I check often just to be sure.It is a quirky looking guitar with the strange looking headstock, but hey, people looked at Christopher Columbus strangely too.Buy it you'll like it!

Excellent Value!!! Best tremolo in the biz!!!

By PacerX

1) At the price, you will NOT beat this guitar from any brand, anywhere.2) You HAVE TO set it up in accordance with the instructions on the Floyd Rose site. Once that's done, the tremolo is flawless.3) The strings are a little tough to find, so you will probably end up ordering them online.4) The switchgear is functional and quiet, but isn't the best out there. Replace it if you're a maniac like me. Cheap to do if you can solder.5) The pickups are good but not great. Look up some tasty Seymour Duncans or whatever you prefer. With the steps above done, it's a world-class instrument.

Very Playable

By Rob

from Reston, VA

This is a very playable guitar. The action is not low, but somehow it is very easy to play. The speedloader system is awesome. I think it also adds to the playability. Pick ups are good but not great. Strat like sound. Made in China, but still a great guitar.

Made in China, But It's No Cheap Toy

By ShaveYourNeighbor

from Phoenix, AZ

See all my reviews

I must say, wow. You wouldn't normally expect much from a company that goes from making hardware alone to full guitars as far as quality of construction is concerned, but this is nice. Streamlined neck all the way down makes it easy to play, and the Speedloader trem is a dream come true and really not that hard to operate. It has tight action, though not as tight as my old Washburn's, and plays beautifully. The only thing I can find wrong with it is that the single coil pick-ups sound really flat and ought to be replaced. The humbucker is the only pickup with workable tone when any distortion comes into play (and I mean anything above a straight, perfectly clean setting). If you don't mind the Chinese label, I'll say buy it. It has a nice, light twangy sound that I like juxtaposing my muddy HH Washburn, so I couldn't be much happier with it.

One great guitar with some minor flaws

By Explorer-Nut

from Raleigh, NC

Features: Okay, this guitar has some great features, but some of them could have been left on the Floyd Rose Discovery V series. I have owned this guitar for a little over one year and I have to say that it plays just as good, if not better, than some of my more expensive guitars. Mind you, the Speedloader system is a dream to work with, and you may never need it. I bend strings sometimes a full 2 notes, and I have yet to break one of these strings. The one quirk I have with the original pickups is that the humbucker installed was way too bright with not enough punch. It also would go "microphonic" long before any of my other pickups, even the EMG 81 installed in my Les Paul. (A quick pickup swap fixed that)Quality: Overall good quality; The screws that hold the trem cover in place stripped out quite easily. Also, the faux pearl overlay on the pickguard peeled away, leaving a satin white 3 layer pickguard behind. I also found the nut seat at the top of the neck needed to be filed down to get the strings closer to the first fret.Value: For the money, unbeatable... From gritty to clean to thick with a flip of a switch and a tweak of the volume knob.Overall: If this one was stolen, I'd definitely want to replace it. It is not my main guitar, but serves a wide scope of the music that I play.

Another great guitar

By W0Rk4L1f3

I have the next model up from this guitar. I love the sound of the pickups. They are right up there with Fender and Gibson. However, there is one problem I have with the guitar. I love the concept of the speedloader strings. Once tuned up, it generally stays in tune, but whenever a string breaks, it throws the entire bridge off and the entire guitar goes out of tune. Then to put in new strings defeats the point of the speed in the speedloaders. To get it all tuned precisely, it averagely takes me 45 minutes to replace all my strings due to the pressure the strings put on the bridge pulling it in.

Great Guitar for Twice the Price

By K. West-MShDE

I bought one of these for my son's birthday. I set it up and adjusted the string length, adjusted intonation, then I played it for a couple of days before giving it to him, now I have to have one! Trem is the best ever, plays like a dream with jumbo polished frets, dressed nicely with smooth edges, great feeling neck, screams through my 50 watt Marshall. Leaves your fingertips black for some reason, seems to be the fingerboard rather than the strings, hopefully this will go away. Single coil Strat and out of phase sounds are cool. Overall, an easy 10, especially for the price!

Like In-Tune Guitars??

By itseasymmkay27

I saw Richie Sambora with this guitar about a year ago, and instantly fell in love with it. Since then, I have debated on buying. I finally decided to buy it- and am so glad I did. Firstly, this guitar's bridge is amazing. I love to use the whammy bar, and have yet to be able to make it out of tune. The neck is great, and it is incredibly light weight. The main problem I have with the guitar is the middle and neck pickups. Like others have said, they have a very tinny sound, and buzz and little. The bridge humbucker sounds great. Other than that, I really have no complaints. I have used this guitar when performing in my worship band, and everyone not only loves the looks but loves the sound.

The Best for the money in my book

By Cobweb

from Louisville, KY

I have owned it for over a year now, I still LOVE this guitar. For the money it is perfect, plays fantastic, and sounds good too. For the money you could expect the pickups and electronics to be a little cheap, but the body and neck are great. I have but one complaint, if you read the specs FR says you can change a string in the middle of a song and get right in tune. Well its not that easy you have to adjust the range settings perfectly to make that happen. I drop D alot so I cant set the range on low E to allow instant changing but the strings dont break that often. One thing I can say is IT STAYS IN TUNE ! That alone makes me love this guitar.

Ask me a question

This is the best guitar for the money! Great neck and it stays in tune all the time. The Pickups are very neutral sounding so You might want to throw your favorites in the Pickguard, but if not you can color the sound to your liking with the tone controls on your amp, for now I am having fun with the stock set up!

Can't be made a hardtail as advertised

By Bill Ware

from Cleburne, TX

The description states that the "tremolo" (vibrato) bridge can be "instantly" converted into a "hardtail setup." This is not true. Although the vibrato can be blocked so that it is dive only, the process involves removing the back plate (six philips screws) and turning at least an allen head screw and possibly the philips head spring tensioning screws and adding another spring--hardly instant.

Spot on!

This is one rock solid guitar! I wish the bridge pickup could split because it seem hot enough to work well as a single coil. Once set up properly it plays better than any Floyd type system I have used. I wish Mr. Rose came out with this system 15 years ago. It may be too late now for it to catch on. Lets hope other string makers make strings for this soon because the DM's are WAY over priced and not very impressive. The inovation of this system is in the strings after all. I hope somebody keeps making them!

bang for the buck

By Mad Axeman45

from Bluffton,IN

I got the Floyd Rose DST-3 on a whim, and I'm glad I did.The Speedloader's a great little tailpiece, although if you change all six strings at once it's a pain,so I'd recommend only changing one at a time. The construction is great. The neck is fantastic and the body's basswood instead of agathis like a lot of guitars in this price range. The electronics leave a lot to be desired, however.I slapped a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the rear, changed the selector switch and volume pot,and that helped emmensely. The only major complaint I have are the strings. They aren't the ultimate string Markley ever made, but it's the only choice, and you can't fault the guitar.Would i buy another one?Yeah i would!!

worth every penny

By Jeff-ymrWh

I have always known the floyd rose whammy bars to be the best. Without them the 80s metal scene probably wouldn't have happened. Which is why I didn't hesitate to snap up two of these guitars; the DST 1 and the DST 3. They are both well built and fully adjustable. I had no trouble setting them up to my exact specifications. However, there is one major flaw here. There were no instructions included at all. While I drew on my 20 years of experience with Floyd Roses to figure out the new speedloader system, a novice would have been completely lost, and would likely have had to pay a professional to set it up.

SPOT ON IS RIGHT ON

By geetarman

What a BARGAIN! This guitar is so much fun to play! No argument about the quality of the single coils but the humbucker sure puts out. I played around with the single coils, adjusted them up & then played it through a Blues Jr. getting some great, weird tones. Set up on arrival may be a bit confusing (no instructions included but you get plenty of allen wrenches). You need to remove the back cover (like a Strat) to adjust the tremelo for the first tuning (not much tuning after that). This guitar will play comfortably with it's very well intonated neck & bridge until your fingers get tired! I bought a bunch of extra strings but have yet to break any of the originals. Mine came in blue, ugly blue, so ugly it will definitly become a collectable. This is a great guitar for oldies, surf tunes and blues. It's a Floyd Rose! It's a must have.
