OVERVIEW

A fun guitar with breakthrough technology for mastering the fretboard.

This innovative guitar incorporates sleek lines and supple contours to fit snuggly to your body.

The FG-521 has a robust, one-custom humbucker/two single-coil setup that provides you with a palette of tones to choose from. The Fretlight neck includes the patented Advanced Polymer Fretboard and the world's only built-in LED learning system. Finished with chrome hardware including a fixed bridge, a two-way truss rod and fully adjustable bridge saddles give you complete adjustability for a playing experience that can only be described as pure heaven. The Advanced Polymer Fretboard and Stratabond birch neck gives your tone a sustain that you've only dreamed about.

The updated Fretlight FG-500 guitar sports some significant changes, all aimed toward making the Fretlight the extremely easy guitar to play.

The FG-500's electronics have been upgraded to the Sonix Flash chipset, complete with onboard capability for future growth, and fully compatible with all existing Fretlight software. Its high efficiency electronics produce extremely bright and more consistent LED lights. Whether you're lighting a simple riff, or a scale across the entire fretboard, the lights will maintain a consistent brightness.

Additionally, all FG-500 guitars have a Stratabond neck. Stratabond is a state-of-the-art engineered hardwood that yields uncommon strength and rigidity across ever changing environmental conditions. Perfect for guitar necks that are susceptible to expansion and contraction due to varying humidity levels. The FG-500's Stratabond birch neck will provide very consistent performance for years to come.

The Fretlight lighted guitar learning system allows a player to light-up songs, over 5,000 chords and scale patterns, and riffs right on the neck of the Fretlight guitar. The Fretlight connects to a PC or Mac and there are lessons, songs and interactive videos available which all light up the guitar.

A great idea. The hardware (Guitar) and software leave much to be desired. Get one in 5 years, they might be good by then.

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

The concept of a guitar with LEDs in the fretboard to help you learn fingering for chords, scales, etc. is a great idea. The Fretlight guitar hardware can't be flawed. The fretboard feels natural and you have no hint that it is studded with LEDs until they light up. I bought the FG-521, which is a strat copy that feels comfortable and familiar. The only thing it lacks is a tremolo. Where I feel there is a real weakness is not the guitar, but the software. The software doesn't really exploit the guitars potential, something I hope is addressed in future releases. I was looking for scale exercises, but they weren't there. The videos you get start at the intermediate level, so if you are a novice, too bad. The videos are of a guy demonstrating various chords etc., but it doesn't tie in well with the lighted fretboard capability, and I didn't see the drills and progressions you typically see in other books and videos. I do think this is a great concept for learning, but I feel the software isn't quite there yet.

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

I purchased my guitar (Fretlight FG-521 Sunburst) exclusively as a practice instrument. It came with all kinds of useful tutorials and learning videos. I got virtually immediate & tangible results -- exactly what I was expecting with my purchase. I get to improve every day of practice my technique as the fretboard lights up. As a nice bonus, when I decide not to plug in the computer and using the actual "lights" I can just use it as a regular guitar. It is a delight to play. No buyer's remorse whatsoever with this guy!

This is a fantastic instrument! It is NOT a toy by any means. Not just beautiful to look at, it has a great sound and feel on its own right -- I could not find a flaw on the craftsmanship. The fretboard "texture" felt a bit different (not bad) from any of my other guitars at first, but a few minutes into using it, suddenly just became very natural to the touch. You'll be surprised how this material achieves such great sustain! If you're still looking for that "first guitar" to learn, look no further. This instrument will give you hours of entertainment as you learn and/or polish new/old skills. If you're more experienced, this will help you reinforce your technique. It is the best deal for the price range.

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

I bought an FG-421 for myself a year ago, I liked it so much I got one for my brother. I previously had a Squier vintage modified strat that was well reviewed, I feel like this one is just as good. It's a hardtail, no trem bar, which I like. It's been a great tool, there's no doubt I'm a better player since getting it, even people I jam with have noticed. Some people are born to play music. I needed help, but can't afford lessons. Seeing a scale or mode lit up across the entire fretboard with root notes flashing has helped me a lot. I also use it with Band in a Box, which lets me follow the solos of world-class players note by note. I'll never outgrow it, I haven't even tried any of the third party software that's available for it. The only thing I can't review is the pickups because I just play at home, and usually use amp modeling. It sounds a little different than my previous strat, but I couldn't say if that's good or bad. I consider this a learning guitar anyway, if I played out, I'd get another. One hint for new users that wasn't obvious to me: the scale library does not flash root notes. But if you go to the improviser and select the backing track called "Basic Scale Practice," you can click the root notes button and the root notes will flash for any scale or mode. You just need to let the backing track play for a couple seconds, then pause it. Works great. Hopefully they'll improve the scale library, but this workaround solves the issue.

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

I really liked the Fretlight concept. I bought an FG 421, Strat copy, about three years ago. From the beginning it would not stay in tune. Since I have other "real" guitars I decided to keep it as a learning tool only. BIG MISTAKE. I lost interest in it because it sounded and played terrible compared to my 86 strat. I found the diodes difficult to see when holding the guitar in playing position. I found a good local luthier and after he proved himself with other guitars, I gave him the Fretlight to see if he could make a decent guitar out of it. I was prepared to change the tuners and put a EMG loaded pick guard on it in hopes of making it playable. After adjusting the truss rod, leveling the frets and doing a total set-up on the guitar it still would not stay in tune. He then discovered that the plastic electronic fingerboard was separating from the neck base on both sides. This GUITAR IS GARBAGE!

I spoke with Greg at Fretlight and even thought he sounded genuinely interested in helping me... The bottom line is that it is out of warranty and It will cost me two hundred to fix the neck on my own with no guarantee that the fingerboard will not break in the process. That does not include the three hundred it will cost for new tuners and the EMG plus the cost at the guitar shop of installation of the upgrades and a new set-up.

Greg is willing to "try" to fix the neck and my only cost is shipping it to Fretlight. They will "try" to repair it and pay the shipping back to me. Greg spoke to my Luthier and doesn't think the repair is going to be successful… His best advice is to buy a new one. RIGHT… Waste more money at Fretlight!!! I am retreating to my original position. I will use it as a learning tool for chords and scales. It is useless as a playable guitar and therefore it's ability to teach songs and work with GP 6 is hobbled. I would not buy a guitar from Fretlight without a lifetime warranty… They have design flaws and are made cheaply… THEY WILL NOT LAST!!!

In this day and age this piece of gear should be in everyones collection. At this price don't hesitate get it. The fretlight guitar should be in every public school in America. You could take someone who knows nothing about guitar playing and have them playing actual music sooner than later! Looking at the fretboard vs looking at a video or written music is a game changer.

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

Great learning tool. I ended up returning 3 guitars. First one which was I think new old stock for fret buzz. It was however gorgeous. Beautiful wood grain and superb sunburst. The next 2 looked like someone puked on the top and then took a can of black spray paint around the edge. The plywood neck feels weird to play on. I say save some money and get a used 400 series at least you get a maple neck that looks and feels right. You will have to get either one professionally setup. They tell you that anyways. Thank you to Musicans Friend for working with me. I ended up getting a 400 series Tele used for $$$$

Comments about Fretlight FG-521 Electric Guitar with Built-in Lighted Learning System:

The guitar was set up nice, correct height at the nut, close at the 12th fret too. Weather's been cold here so a slight fret buzz around the 5th fret wasn't completely unexpected, as delivery isn't climate controlled. The fret ends are well groomed and the Polymer fret board was like playing on smooth glass. Slides and bending notes were easy, and I sounded great (at times). I liked the 12"fret board radius, similar to my Johnson Del Mar Strat, just a little more flat than my Mexico Fender Strat, and the fret size seemed a tiny bit larger, though they are both listed as medium jumbo frets. The pick-ups sound just like the video making it easier to stum along. The guitar sounded great without an amp too.

The lessons are fun to try to keep up with, watching my finger tips light up as I hit the right notes. I did the beginner 1 and 2 lessons, the intro A-minor jam, and the Beatle's song "Get Back", adding a desired video loop. Previous viewed Fred Sokolow's DVD's really help knowing finger placement for scales and such. The software loading instructions could have been a little more percise for me, my weakness. Using the Fretlight Studio software was simple. Just had it a couple of days, but since there are no reviews yet, I figured this may be of some help.
