This is the best Les Paul, off the rack, I have ever played/owned. The '60's style neck feels great. It rings acoustically. The Tones available from the Burstbucker pickups and new push/pull switching system controls are all useful. The pickups sound great with a variety of Fender, Mesa Boogie, Vox, and Gibson amplifiers that I play through regularly. I dig the single coil P-90 tone availability! The guitar is lightweight enough to play 4 sets. The fit and finish are perfect. The Premium Plus top was actually a highly figured, book-matched piece of maple, with no dark spalting veins. Wow! It is a very good value for a new Gibson. My construction concerns are: Why didn't Gibson use their jumbo frets, as one is accustomed to find on a good Les Paul? The medium frets are O.K, but not what the most players want. And, why did they use low budget, dark amber colored "Top Hat" style knobs? These knobs not only are aesthetically unpleasing (they look cheap and the numbers are not even white), but make it difficult to pull up the switch. I replaced my control knobs pronto, with gold Gibson brand "Speed Knobs". If you do this mod, beware of other brands that might not fit the knurled control shaft. It not only looks way better, but I can easily pull up the switches, and do "pinkie" volume swells. This modification should also prevent fingernail scratches around the controls. If Gibson intends to keep the top hat knobs, players would be with probably be much happier with push/push switches, and a better looking knob.
As this production line axe stands, it is close enough to perfect for me. It's a keeper.
A quality control niggle that I have is that when the guitar was first pulled from the case, I found underneath the guitar, a stray metal latch rivet and sharp chunk of wood debris. This left minor scratches in my guitar, but I should be able to rub them out. I kindly suggest that inspectors should check under the side padding, where construction debris can hide.

Overall the guitar plays and looks great but it sounds a little weak, has some tuning issues, and could use taller frets. I appreciate Gibsons attempts to improve the standard with the higher quality top, improved tuners, electronic upgrades, compound radius fret board, and better designed weight relief BUT the baby frets, cheap nut, pick up sound, and 2 piece glued together fret board are a deal killer for me.
Gibson made a good effort to improve the features but they missed on a few points. First off this new modern weight relief is the ticket. It just feels right. The push/pull, bypass, and phase switch electronic upgrades are absolutely great. I mean if you can have more features but have the ability to go back to that classic Les Paul sound why not right? The AAA top is a nice improvement as well as this a 2k + guitar with the name Gibson on it so this should be a given. They placed the highest quality locking tuners on this model as well which I can appreciate. I do have a few issues though. They decreased the fret size to a medium down from a medium jumbo. The frets are just way to short and my finger tips drag on the board, especially in the upper region. Another feature that needs improvement is the nut. I wish they would just get a contract with Graphtech already as these plastic nuts are horrid for tuning. Im not a fan of the burstbuckers either. I have a Les Paul with 57 classics and they make the burstbuckers sound hollow and a little weak.
The quality in some areas is great and in others not. The fret board and frets are flawless and immaculate. The locking Grover tuners with 18:1 ratio are the best you can get. The finish could be better though. The top on this one has scratches all over it as if someone left it on a buffing wheel too long and it's not very shiny. The nut isnt so hot as mentioned before and the guitar has tuning issues. Ive played guitars a third of the price with a Graphtech self lubricating nut that stayed in tune better.
For the price Id like to see better sounding pick ups, a higher quality nut, and different neck radius and fret size options. A little more attention to detail on the finish is in good order as well. Some people arent going to like the compound radius and being stuck with these tiny short frets is no fun.

First I want to say purchasing from Musician's Friend is simpley the best. I have been dealing with other dealers and NOT ONE comes close to customer support then Musician's Friend. I will make them my one and only because they mean to please!!!
The 2012 Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar is one of the best sounding, feeling I ever had. I really enjoy everything about it righ down to the great case. The neck feels comfortable with no hand strain. The setup was perfect due to the Gibson Plek System. Check out the video on YouTube on this Plek System, it may encourage you. I urge people to make the purchase espicially from Musician' Friend. I thank you to all the people I delt with in the past and I am looking forward to my next purchase with you!

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
So far this guitar is amazing, beautiful tone and excellent sustain. The stock strings are a bit light for my liking, so I swapped them out right away. This guitar is everything I hoped it would be and more. With the coil splitting and by-pass it is an incredibly versatile instrument. And the compound radius neck is comfortable and fast.
On another note, I have to admit I was a bit reluctant to make an order this important online, but the guitar got to me in four days during the X-Mas season and was in perfect condition, so fart it was a great experience.

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
Nice guitar. I like the feel of the neck and the compund radius on the fretboard, it makes it easy to play. The pickups sound good.
I get some dead strings around the 17-22 frets on the third and fourth strings. Also, there are a few minor cosmetic flaws on the fretboard binding around the neck pickup. It doesn't affect the playability of the guitar.
It's still one of the best playing guitars I own but, Gibson could use better quality control.

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
My Les Paul arrived surprisingly well set up. Fast, low action, with no buzzing and good intonation. Unfortunately, the strings were old and needed replacement. I used DR 'Pure Blues' 0.10's. The intonation on the 5th string required lots of adjustment, but otherwise, everything checks out.
The tone and sustain are everything that you'd expect from a Les Paul. The new-for-2012 electronics with coil splitting, out-of-phase switch, and pure bypass mode offer a lot of tonal variations, not mention the usual effects of backing off the volume or tone controls.
I think Gibson could have included a polishing cloth and a few other accessories at this price point, but I guess they can do whatever they like.
You can't go wrong with a real, American Made, Gibson Les Paul.

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
I just bought an Ebony Les Paul Standard and couldn't resist sharing my thoughts.
A lot of ink has been spilled about the features and characteristics of the modern LP Standards, so you should know what you're getting in that regard.
I'd just like to provide info on the specific Les Paul that I received. In my case, the guitar was as close to perfect as could be expected. The finish was flawless front to back. No orange peeling, swirls, hazing, or scratches. No tolerances at any of the joints. The binding was flawlessly applied, again, with no spacing at any of the joints. The setup is fast and smooth with no fret buzz whatsoever. The supplied case is very high quality and would have been expensive if purchased separately.
I've seen a certain amount of grousing about the quality in the Les Paul line, but my experience seems to run counter to any of those concerns.
My only very minor complaint is that the strap buttons are a bit small and cause some concern that my now beloved guitar could at some point be damaged as a result. I wish that they had kept the strap locks from the 2008 model, but I'm sure they were removed due to complaints on the internet from some anti-strap lock contingency.
As always, the transaction with Musician's Friend was fast and without incident.

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
I have played guitar for over 30 years and have had several Les Pauls. This new asymmetrical neck is the most playable! I tried out dozens of LP standards at stores like traditionals, Deluxes and Specials and it this one shredded all the way up the neck and was way comfortable and looked dead sexy so I got it!
When I got it home I could hear that it buzzed at the first 3 frets or so and it played like there were super slinky 7's on it, so I put 11's on it and returned it to the store for intonation. It still plays slinky with 11's on it and feels great, but I can not keep it in tune to save my life! The nut pinches the strings and it just doesnt need the Jinky locking grovers IMO. I am confident the tuning issue can be resolved tho.
This is an amazingly versatile sounding guitar. I can dial in the spanky funk, to Pagey solos to the heaviest Al Dimeola shredding and all dropped D Soundgarden riffs prove positve for the CHUNK! The case fit is perfect and it is a GREAT guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AA Electric Guitar:
Overall I love this guitar. I am replacing a 1968 Les Paul that was stolen from me. Had that guitar for 35 years. I think that this is the best sounding Les Paul that has been produced since the late 60's.
Finish is excellent - much improved, however still not PRS quality. Some very minor manufacturing imperfections.
Tone however is awesome. Great idea to borrow Page's setup for the electronics. Coil tap and out of phase sound fantastic.
Disappointed in the PLEK setup. Strings have to be higher than I am used to to avoid fret buzz, especially above the 14th fret.
